what kind of license for trike?

A friend is interested in getting a trike bike, here in Texas. Does anyone know what kind of licenses (car or motorcycle) is needed? If motorcycle license is needed, then can he do the license drive test on the trike instead of a two wheel motorcycle?

ps gotten two different answers from the police today. Tried to talk to DMV, but they dont speaka NO ENGLISH, si and me no spikola!! How in heck did we (USA) lose the state of TEXAS!?

Texas is like most states. A trike is considered a motorcycle. Same licensing requirements as your X.

Trike is a motorcycle here in OK. When I went to get the tag/plate they said they based it on the bike (used 05 bike) and didn't charge sales tax for the trike kit (new 07) as they said it was an "add on." Was weird how they figured out the taxes on this thing.

Not sure how taking a test works as Tejas did his on the VTX years ago but you would think no problem doing the test on a trike since they are legal motorcycles and have motorcycle plates.

A quick search found this from the Texas DPS:

http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/msb/mopedinfo.htm

Definition of a motorcycle Every motor vehicle having a saddle for the use of the rider and designed to propel itself with not more than three (3) wheels in contact with the ground but excluding a tractor.

Tell him to move to California. Trikes here aren't considered M1. You just need the same license you use for your car.

Wonder if thats because alot of trikes are or were made with car motors?

My wife has a VW trike in Kentucky, it is licensed as a bike. She has to take the M/C road test, but they will make a test for her trike.
