Oh, in the 1960''s. Honda and most Japanese motorcycle companies.. used Whale Oil.. most foul smelling stuff..
and sucked up water way more then brake fluid... You had to change it every year..

my 1966 Honda had it... by 1969 Honda changed to ATF.. and some bikes did have a type of motor oil.. but it was a single weight.. like W20.

and YES, ATF is the standard fluid.. in replacements... fork oil and many weighs of fork oil came about the 1980's dirt bike Craze..

different point.. Honda's used to have grease fitting .. clutch mechanism, clutch cable, rear swing arm bushings. steering head bearings, drum brake arms. (2).

bikes today are almost maintenance Free. but NOT YET.

Whale oil?! If that wasn't coming from you Chuck I'd think you were pulling my leg. But, I never owned a Japanese bike until the early '80s. On the flip side, I can second what Charlie D wrote. I've been running ATF in my HDs and this VTX for a long time. Over 100,000 miles on the X. 2 front end rebuilds. 1st was cause of leaking seal (around 35,000 miles), replaced whatever Honda put in there with ATF. 2nd time was just PM (around 80,000 miles) but did replace bushings/seals,etc., filled with ATF again.

My oldest make of Honda I've owned was a 1972 750 Four I think. I never had the pleasure of changing whale oil, lol. I will try ATF when I change fork oil.
