Viking Saddlebags Don't Fit!

Just got in a set of bags from Viking for my 09 R. Don't fit. Question: didn't all 1300 R's come with a sissy bar bracket over the fender strut? These bags are model specific with a shock cutout, but without removing the chrome bracket over the fender strut, looks like a no go. Am I missing something or just nuts?

I have the VIKING VTX 216 bags on my 1300S. They have the shock cutouts also and include the mounting hardware.
It requires long bolts to mount to the chrome fender rail, if that's your question. Pretty sure all R/S have the chrome on the fenders, mine does not have a sissy bar.

I as well had to buy longer bolts.

The earlier I get behind, the longer I will have to try and catch up.
It doesn't take me all day to get nothing done; I can get nothing done by break time.

They fit my 2007 C fit but I had to purchase the longer bolts from ACE Hardware

I guess I got lucky, might came with long enough bolts. I got the large tour model with shock cutout. Fit up just fine.

I don't believe any came with sissy bar brackets. Dealer addons or DIY.

Honda line sissy bar/luggage rack brackets use the center and forward bolts and the rear bolts are covered.
That is the way I remember seeing or reading about it.

My aftermarket sissy bar/luggage rack bracket uses the middle and rear bolts to mount to the grab rail(strut). I believe most aftermarket are like this.

Exactly what I have. The aftermarket bracket for the sissybar covers the fender strut. So, can't have both trunk and bags? Doesn't make sense.

No it doesn't, but then Honda never wanted the bike to have a trunk. So, you'll have to do some drilling on the trunk/backrest arm to get access to the bolts with the bags on

I HAVE to keep a Passenger Backrest on the Bike for the Wife but had the same problem
with the Backrest mounts covered the Rear Fender Bolt.
I was worried that drilling Chrome Plated Mounts would make the chrome flake or peel.
I didn't have much choice so I bought a New Bit to make sure it was sharp and drilled very slow.
So far the chrome is fine... And I got my Bags mounted.

A new bit is essential, add tape where you want to drill through the chrome and peel that tape off gently when done. Then you can add clear coat from a paint pen from any auto parts store to the edge of the drilled hole to keep as much water/gunk from getting behind the chrome
