I have one of these on my VStar and it was very simple to install. On my VTX, I opted for this instead:

It's just a bulb that flashes in the same way as the whammy (sans flashing signals with the brake).

Here is a previous discussion on flashing tail light options:

Good that you are doing something to improve your rear visibility.

Just don't ask if you rear looks fat.

I'm not an electrician, so my buddy Renegade Rick installed mine. Because my 1800 C only has one blinker indicator for both turn signals, he had to wire something different, maybe an extra resistor? in order for mine to flash properly. If you then use LED lights, it will flash rapidly unless using an LED flasher relay.

I ordered this today and watched a video on the install. Not a good video from kurakyn! He cut 4 wires on the input side and 3 on the output side? Also seamed a little confusing on the colors. I am not using led's but still have a concern on the install. Just trying to be prepared. Looking for any help out there!!!!!

Also the comments on that video were all negative. Over a half dozen weren't answered!

My best advice to anyone would be to consider what you want before you purchase. If the desire is for a pulsing rear brake function and always on rear signals that also pulse with the brake light, (you'll have to change lenses to red and you state laws must allow this) get the plug-n-play:

Kuryakyn product:

Fitment: Part#4610

'06-'09 VTX1300C, '06-'09 VTX1300R, '06-'07 VTX1300S, '08-'09 VTX1300T, '05-'07 VTX1800C, '04-'08 VTX1800R, '04-'07 VTX1800S & '07-'08 VTX1800T
If you don't want to change your rear lenses to red and don't care about the always on option, or the signals also flashing with the brake, simply buy the TailBlazer light bulb, as it gives you the bright, pulsing rear brake light and you need only screw in the bulb and you're done:

I do not have a service manual. Will someone give me the required wire color/function for a stock bike? Thanks

I couldn't find anything for a 1300, but this is a 'how to' for the 1800 that could help

I installed this last winter. With a meter you can tell which wire color goes where. The hardest part was getting all the new wires tucked back into the same space.
