A hashtag is a method of creating a searchable clause to specify grouping of ideas. So if you hashtag #vtx, people can search for "#vtx" and get relevant posts, rather than partial words, etc.

For an example of how this refines a search: searching for "#am" would bring up only that hashtag, but a search for "am" would bring up any post with those two letters found anywhere in any word on the post. Amphibian, preamble, scramble, etc, would all come up if you just search for "am".

It was used in IRC back in the '80's and several bulletin board systems in the '70's, where it probably started.
