A hashtag is a method of creating a searchable clause to specify grouping of ideas. So if you hashtag #vtx, people can search for "#vtx" and get relevant posts, rather than partial words, etc.
For an example of how this refines a search: searching for "#am" would bring up only that hashtag, but a search for "am" would bring up any post with those two letters found anywhere in any word on the post. Amphibian, preamble, scramble, etc, would all come up if you just search for "am".
It was used in IRC back in the '80's and several bulletin board systems in the '70's, where it probably started.

“The notion that faith in Christ is to be rewarded by an eternity of bliss, while a dependence upon reason, observation, and experience merits everlasting pain, is too absurd for refutation, and can be believed only by that unhappy mixture of insanity and ignorance, called faith.” ― Robert G. Ingersoll
