Has anyone recently rode highway 87 SD in the Black Hills/ Custer National Park. It looks paved and pretty good on google.....but.....like to hear from boots on the ground...so to speak?
I rode all over the Black Hills last year and the roads were in great shape! The only thing I didn't like was that some parts of Needles Highway (which is 87 in Custer St. Park) the lanes weren't marked with a divider line and some cages didn't stay in their lanes. But overall yes the roads are in excellent shape, complete with buffalo dung!
I appreciate the responses. Thank you. I could see some of it wasn't "lined" but some I couldn't tell if it was an "all weather" road or pavement. A few miles on dirt I can handle but since my last ordeal crossing streams and such I thought I might get a little more info...lol
Should be a really peaceful ride now. The scenery in Custer, Iron Mountain road, Needles Hwy, and all around is great. Sylvan Lake is one of the most beautiful places in my opinion. Makes me want to go back again.
September 30th, Buffalo Roundup. A little late for me. Any once in a life time areas in the country, must see's. I plan on the Badlands, Custer SP hwy 87, Sylvan Lake, Rushmore. Caballo Loco, Deadwood, Devils Tower, Oregon Trail. I like historical things, scenery. I really cant think of a reason to go to Sturgis except for a Tee Shirt....lol I like Tee shirts......
Crazy Horse monument is about 15 miles from Keystone. Elk Creek Steakhouse on I-90 between Rapid City and Sturgis is a great place to eat. Roscoz in Sturgis across from Iron Horse Saloon on Lazelle has excellent chilli and steak tips. The guy raises his own cattle for the beef that he uses.
If you ride on I-90 across South Dakota then stop in Mitchell for the Corn Palace. If you ride across Nebraska on I-80 then stop in Kearney at the Platt River road museum.
Not sure about Custer Battlefield, or Sitting Bulls grave site. Either one adds 400 miles, But it may be a wild hair ride as I've had those before. The nice thing is having the choices.......
