I know there are several GPS ?'s on the board. But I think I've narrowed my search to the Garmin GPSMAP 60 Csx or possibly the 2610? I would like one that I could use for multiple purposes to get me started it the GPS world.

If you've used the 60Csx, how do you like it? Can you see it while riding? Does it give good directions and allow for auto re-routes to get around traffic and accidents? What are some of the pros and cons that you have found.

Thanks

You may find some information on that one here. http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/default.as ... Version=EN (http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/default.asp?_SetCurrentVersion=EN)

I dont know what you mean by multiple purposes. If you mean portable you might look at the Quest 2. I just bought a 2610 but like you have little experence with gps.

The wife and I use the 60CS model. It's pretty close and it works great. It is very easy to see and the directions are right on the money especially when you get the optional GARMIN MapSource City Navigator North America v7. I've got the power cord hardwired to the bike and I've got it mounted to a RAM Mount. Here's a picture of my setup.

I run with the Garmin 276C which has both 12 v + wired and a battery backup, it's display is awesome, easy to see in direct sun light, I have 256 megs ram and its stored more than my typical ride area North East Corner of the states with room to add and store..

I found that gpscity.com was one of the best places to shop for all arond
package prices.. give em a look and compare apples to apples

Thanks RogerBzVTX and tlfulller. I think I'm going to go with the GPSMAP 60CSX. I do have a question about mapping software. I currently use MS Streets and Trips. Can I use this with my new GPS? Doesn't some mapping software come the unit so I can use it right out of the box? What advantage does the MapSource City Navigator give me?

Can you tell I'm a GPS noob?

Do you know of any websites that I can use to help learn how to use it.

Thanks for the help

Yes it does come with software so you can use it right from the box. The MapSource City Navigator software lets you get down to the address level. You can see resturants, hotels, gas stations and all kinds of other things. The base map in the unit doesn't get that detailed. You'll be able to get from place to place but if you need to search for something specific with the GPS the City Navigator software will let you do it without having to find a yellow pages.

Here's the description of MapSource City Navigator.

Thanks again

That answers my question. I just bought the 60CSX and ram mount. Should be here Friday already. The City Navigator sounds alot like MS Streets and Trips (which I just bought over the winter). Hopefully I don't have to spend the extra $$'s to buy City Navigator right away. For now I'm most likely going to use batteries and maybe over the winter figure out how to hook up an cigaratte lighter outlet.

Looking forward to not having to write all my directions out :D

I finally got my Garmin 60CSX in with ram mount and tested it this weekend. I think I'm really going to like it once I figure everything out. I've decided I need to get the MapSource City Navigator but waiting to see if Garmin comes out with v8 like I've read in a few places.

One problem I am having is the ram mount. The unit sits fine in the cradle but if I hit a hard bump it flies right off.. I'm glad I tied it down with the carrying strap. Does anyone else have this problem? What are you doing to secure it to the mount a little better?

I don't have to do anything. It is actually a chore to get the GPS unit OUT of the cradle. Did you put the the little button for the belt clip on the back of the unit before you put the unit in the cradle? If you did there may be something wrong with the cradle you got. Hope you can figure it out. Its too expensive to have it come flying off the bike on the highway.

Good luck.

Problem solved. I didn't have the little button on for the belt clip. You're right now I have a hard time getting it out of the cradle. I'm sure there's a trick somewhere.

yes, just press on the "hump" in the spine of the cradle with your index finger and press the opposite way with your thumb on the top tab.

once you get the hang of it, it's no problem.
