Boyz ~0 Boy.... this is not good, just took a ride around the block to warm up the engine. (abount 1 mile) After the normal 5 to 6 minute warm up in the garage. Parked the bike in the driveway fo about 2 to 3 minutes to run inside and grab one of my kids to go for a ride, walked out of the door and there it was ... MOTOR OIL ... running out of the bottom of the engine. Oil loss about (1 quart) as the engine was running.
After turning off the engine and dumping a bag of oil dry in the driveway. I started to look for the source of the leak (as oil was still running out with the engine off) First thought was the oil filter or oil drain plug. But the oil was coming from up higher then the oil filter. I removed the left side cover (the one that covers the final drive section) And there was the engine oil leak, the Shift Shaft Seal pushed out with motor oil running out around it.... geez. This bike only has 1038 miles on it and leaking motor oil (I seem to remember my Harley doing something like this "leaking oil that is")
Anyway while inspecting the leaking seal, I noticed that the shift shaft seal on the VTX 1300 is a soft rubber seal with little to no support around it. I was able to push it back into place with my little finger. There is a clamp (bracket) covering the seal to hold it in place , But this clam only covers about 1/4 of the outter surface ... leaving 3/4 of the outter edge of the seal with (NO SUPPORT) to keep the seal from popping OUT!!! (sorry just a little upset with the red-neck that designed this seal keeper, clamp. bracket whatever it's called)
Heads up Guys this is a weak area and the seal could pop out while ridding down the highway ... and by the time you see the low oil pressure dumb-dumb light has come on .. it will be all over for your engine..... bad stuff...
Sure happy this happened to the drivway and not out on the road somewhere.....
Has anyone else see this happen???????
