As per my posts below. I finally decided on the Autocom system and received it this week. I took the old VTX out today and tried it out after installing the head sets and mics. in the helmets. The communications were great. Even on the first ride. The intercom was crystal clear between me and the wife even turned half way up. I got the Easi-Plus kit from Autocom America. I will be looking now to network in more functions such as a good music system and maybe tie in the cell phone.
Just thought I would post to let you guys know that I am really happy with the new system.

That's great news. As I've posted many times before, you can't go wrong with Autocom (Active-7).

While I've been successful with it, I personally don't really use the cell phone component of my Autocom. You can really only receive calls and unless you need back and forth info from your workplace, casual calls are really more efficiently and safely rendered at stops (even if touring you'll gas up every 100 miles or so anyway, right?). Music is fine to integrate (I use a Roady2 XM radio and Mix-It2 amp. combo) as is a talking GPS (my Garmin StreetPilot III).

In any event, good for you. Enjoy your new setup and happy communicating!!

Van does yours have the new separate volume controls so each of you can set the volume to your own liking?

Where is the cheapest place to get one.

My thoughts exactly. Also can this setup be used to talk with another bike or two?

There's really no place that consistently beats anybody else in prices on Autocoms. It isn't like HDL undercuts everybody else by a few bucks 90% of the time. Because the models are brand new ("new and improved") for 2006, some dealers may still be offering introductory prices;; otherwise they are all priced about the same. If you would have purchased between November and January last, you could have received a whopping 50% off base price units (for 2005 models)! Many of us (including me) pulled the trigger on that no-brainer. I would recommend going to the US Distributor's website, Top Gear (in NY). http://www.autocomamerica.com/ If you want to compare their prices, they also have a dealers' list and you can call around. But why shop local when Top Gear will send it to your door or office, tax free w/out you giving up your time or legging it around your county?

Regarding bike to bike. Of course they do. You will of course need to purchase your FRS radios and maybe a few other components separately; but the communication technology is all there. My buddy and I use 2 Kenwood FRS radios with our Autocom's. We also play music through them, and either or both of us have used GPS' and cell phones with them. It is fully expandable. Of course the main function is to talk to your passenger (or passengers, plural, if you have a sidecar). Not much beats Autocom (J&M is comparable) unless you go totally high end with a Baehr. Expect your Autocom to last for as long as you chose to ride a motorcycle...

Hey Van,

Where did you mount the base unit and how did you hide the wires going to the helmets? Autocom did seem to give much in the way of suggestions on the web site.

I just had the Autocom Super Pro AVI Intercom system installed on my bike with the new Garmin 2730 GPS/XM Radio unit and it works great. I had it installed in a leather windshield pouch so I can adjust the volume, VOX sensitivity, etc. without going to a lot of trouble.

I have hooked up my Samsung SCH-I730 Smart PC Phone with 2 gig SD memory for MP3s and it works great. You can also buy a transceiver to do bike to bike communications. I installed the wires under the gas tank and seat and had the plug come up in front of the rider's seat between the tank and the seat. I had the rear one zip tied to the rider backrest for the passenger. It works great and sounds even better than I thought it would.

I now have GPS with Touch Screen, XM Radio and 2.75 gig of MP3 memory between the GPS & cellphone so I am very happy with the setup. The next thing will be bike to bike communications. The 2730 is a fantastic unit because I wasn't interested in Bluetooth unless it was stereo and could fit nicely into my helmet without cramping my style.
