Got a sweet deal on a new Garmin 2720 (Under 200 Bucks) http://www.garmin.com/products/sp2720/ and have the motorcycle mount with wire set up on the way also.

How hard is it to wire this up to my bike? and well how? I assume you would want it to switch off when the bike turns off but I am now way a mechanic, electrician or any combination of either so any help would be much appreciated.

You tell me where I can get one for $200 and I'll tell you how to hook it up....

Actually, you can hook the positive wire to the Brown/Black wire in the headlight bucket and the negative wire to any ground or you can connect it to the green wire in the headlight bucket.

You can take a look at the wiring schematic at Chets site. http://www.rattlebars.com/vtx/vtxcheadlightwires.jpg

Hope that helps,
Gary

I have a distributor who is a Garmin rep, he hooked me up with one of his demo's, but it's a new in box never been used demo. The only catch is I have to show it to people :) since it is a demo !

I just bought a Garmin 2610 and I plan to wire it directly to the battery through a 2A fuse. I don't want it to turn off with the bike, and here's why.

Let's say you're on a poker run, and you are using the track log function to save the route (I like to ride them again sometimes). If you stop to draw your card or have something to eat, and turn the gps off, your track stops there. If it stays on, the track continues until YOU turn the gps off. Yes, you'll have to remember to turn it off when you get home, but then you'll probably take it inside and download the track log and save it as a route in the mapping software.

If you wire it "on with the ignition only" you make the track log function more complicated as you now have several tracks to combine.

Does that make any sense?

EDIT: You will need to "protect" the power plug if you don't plug in the gps as it has +12v and will short to ground. I'm thinking about a 35mm film can and lid to use while the gps is not plugged in. Just make a small hole in the lid and put the wires through before soldering them to the fuse and battery terminals. Then the body of the can will prevent shorts and keep the connector clean.

The Garmin motorcycle mount... (mount) is a very generous description for what is essentially just a cradle.... has a slot for the power cord to slide into when you remove the device from the bike. Since it is plastic it insulates the hot shoe and prevents it from grounding on the bike.

I just saw your post. Wish I could afford it right now but I had to loan a bunch of money to a family member.... Wouldn't have the monies for a couple more weeks.
Family before toys, I guess.
Thanx,
Gary

when your kit comes in it will have a cap for the plug that you put on with a plastic jip tie that goes on a loop on the back side of the ram mount when you remove the gps you plug the wire into it and it keeps the plug clean and dry.
