Looks like I’ve got my ’03 VTX 1800 R sold and that means I’ll likely be going to Chattanooga to buy a new bike in the next couple weeks. I want to turn the experience into a great adventure, so I’m looking for some insight on spots to see and places to go. Plus, I’d love to know the BEST places to eat while on my trip. Here’s a basic itinerary and I’d love to hear from those who live around these areas or have been through them recently.

Ultimately the plan is to pick up the bike on Monday, head out on Tuesday, and wind my way north to Columbus, Ohio. My middle child is on a research fellowship in chemistry at Ohio State University, and I’ve never been there. I’d like to spend a couple days around Columbus before heading out again to meander my way west, south, then west again. I’m probably going between July 23 and August 7, so I’ll just list days and not worry about the actual dates.

Day 1 (Sun. July 23): Fly into Chattanooga and stay in local hotel. I’ll likely have a few hours to kill on this Sunday afternoon.

Day 2: Hey, this is my birthday, and probably the day I’ll pick up the new ride. Other than spending some time at the Honda dealer I’ll be on the road for some local sightseeing.

Day 3: If all goes well I’m headed for the Tail of the Dragon. Haven’t decided yet, but chances are I’ll spend the morning and into early afternoon on the Tail and then start more or less north. At the moment I think I’ll likely stop somewhere between the Tail and Knoxville. Depending on how the ride goes I may end up south of Knoxville or somewhere north likely along I-75.

Day 4: Long day of riding to get to Columbus. I’ll probably make stops in Lexington, Cincinnati, and other points along the way. Ultimately I want to be at OSU by this day.

Day 5 & 6 (Thur & Fri July 26 & 27): Probably hanging around OSU and the Columbus area. My kid will be working in the labs at this point so most of the day time hours might be free for sightseeing. At night we’ll want something interesting and some good food.

Day 7: This is where the trip falls apart. Part of me wants to head for Chicago and the on to Sturgis (never been, but not sure I'm missing that much) while the other part wants to go to Kansas City and then Oklahoma City to see friends and relatives. So I'll just leave this open at the moment and I'll explore it more as I get insight from you folks.

Dang ... forgot all about the homecoming. That would be PERFECT for this trip. I'll got the website and see what I can find.

Congrats and enjoy your b-day, trip and new bike!
While we were up in that neck of the woods recently for the Honda Hoot, we found a Knoxville/Nashville area chain of resteraunts called Puleo's Grill. It's a small, locally owned chaing of, get this, Italian/Southern food!! (Yes, fresh mozzeralla and basil/grits is what I'm talking!!!) And they pride them selves on superb customer service!!!

Also, if you see Calhoun's BBQ, another small regional chain there, go for it! Melt in your mouth, baby back ribs! My hubby and I found one in Gatlinburg several years ago when we got married, and have eaten at different ones several times when we go to that region. You can't go wrong there, either.

I'll vote for the Sticky Fingers ribs.

There is two locations in Chatanooga. One is downtown just a couple blocks walk from the touristy River bend park. the aquarium is there also. Chatanooga Choo-choo hotel, (its over hyped). The other is near Hamilton Mall.

A quick update and a hearty thanks for the all who have posted. The '03 will be gone tomorrow (Friday) by mid-morning, so the official planning of the new purchase is underway. Man, I love that '03 Blurple VTX, but I'm getting just as excited about a new bike. Picking colors and such is better than ... well ... no it ain't, but it's darn fun!

So far the plan remains to fly into TN and end up in Chattanooga. No one has had anything bad to say about Southern's prices (though I'm calling Hal's place in about 10 minutes to see what he can do), and the only negative comments have been "high pressure" sales to get you to buy the extended warranty and accessories. I can deal with that.

Italian and Southern Food mix ... now that's something I got to see. I'm originally from southern Oklahoma, so I have a bit of south in me. Oklahoma is the only place I know where you can be from the south, southwest, midwest, and west, depending on who you are talking to. For true southerners we Okies are tolerated pretty well, but out here in the west (Utah) every asks me, "What part of the south are you from?"

Anyway, I've got a few culinary delights in mind, and one of them is certainly BBQ. They do NOT have good BBQ here in Utah.

I've been to a Sticky Fingers in Charleston; aren't they the place that has "Lick my bones" or something like that on the T-shirts? If so, then I've had them in downtown Charleston and they were some pretty good ribs. I ate there twice in my 4 day stay, and it didn't hurt that the waitresses were cute, too. 8)

Of course the other meals I'm looking forward to are good old fashioned southern cooking. Haven't had a decent Chicken Fried Steak in 5 years! And they can't make good pan gravy to save your life around here. Fried Okra! Oh yeah ... Popeyes Chicken.

Dang, I'm gonna blow up like a toad if I eat all that in the first day.

Oh well, this will be a fun trip. Chattanooga around the 23rd and 24th, the Dragon on the 25th and maybe 26th (or those parts anyway), then on to Columbus on the 26th. The Honda Homecoming on the 27th, 28th and 29th, then head back west.

Hope I run into some of you folks while I'm on the road!

Bought my '03 1800C at Southern. A friend bought his '05 1300C at the same time, and I am getting ready to finalize an '05 Shadow Aero for my wife. Never had a problem with Southern and while they did present the extended warranty as an opportunity, when I said no, that was it...'Nuff said.

The trip is well worth it. And, there is good food EVERYWHERE!!!

Ride safe.

A very interesting way from Chattanooga to the Dragon and beyond.
Get over to 411, it is much nicer than the Interstate.
Take it north to Etowah, then take 310 over 39 over to Tellico Plains.
In Tellico Plains, take 68 to 165, wallah, you are on the Cherahola Parkway. Beautiful ride all of the way to NC, It turns into 143.
From there, you can take it all of the way to Robbinsville, over to 28.
28 is Hellbender. It is a ncie ride.
Cherahola will help you get use to the bike.
Hellbender will help you get use to a few twisties on the bike.
It is a great warmup before the Dragon.
Then take the Dragon (129) into TN.
In TN, take Foothills parkway until it dead ends.
Turn left, and you will run smack dab into Knoxville.
It gives you a good day/afternoon of riding, and will also let you see some of God's most beautiful mountains east of the MS.

Not many great places to eat on that route, Most are mainly touristy. Maybe make it to Deals Gap if you can and eat there, to say that you have eaten the Dragon also. hah

In Knoxville, Calhouns on the river is great. Probably find them on the web.

Take care, and LEARN YOUR NEW BIKE FIRST.
Be safe, and enjoy
