Some of you have met my Daughter Jennifer well she's tired of riding b*tch. She wants a bike of her own. She wants to see more than the back of a helmet and secondhand bugs. So im looking getting her in the Motorcycle saftey course first before i turn her loose. We thought we we would start looking now. Anybody got any suggestions on size? I thought she should start out on a 650 or 750 first and work up. Any body got any starter bikes for sale cheap?
Thanks guys
Ted

Aright! I think a 650 or 750 would be fine (after taking the course). I'll keep my eyes open for something in that size. Were talkin a cruiser/standard class right?

Check out the Suzuki Savage / S40. 650cc single with a belt drive. Easy to maintain, 350#, low seat height make it a great starter bike. You can pick up a used one for about $2000.

I can only speak for the Shadow Aero 750, it's what I traded for the X. Good starter bike, very well balanced and enough power to get her started with. Nice looking cruiser style too!

I have a 2003 Shadow ACE Deluxe that is for sale. Me and my wife both had Shadows before I upgraded. It would be a great starter bike. If you would like for me to send you some pics I would be happy to do so.

Easy enough. Just make arrangments to check out the bike (it is used afterall) and pay cash. One american to another.

You may also want to look at the Suzuki 800 Intruder (now called the S50). Lightweight, but still has enough power for the road. My wife has the 1400 version and really likes it. It has a low seat height and what my wife liked best was the narrower tank. Plus it is water cooled and shaft driven (low maintenance).

I agree that both the Suzki S50 (Intruder) and the Honda Shadows are great bikes. (I really like the Shadows).

Bang for buck (that is CC/$) - nothing beats a used Savage (now called the S40). I had a used Savage as my first bike. I rode interstates (tops out a bit over 80mph) and the mountains of NC (for such a low seat bike - it will lean WAY over.

Nothing against scooters (I'd love to have a Vino 125 myself), but I still think it is a niche market. Lots of folks are starting out on two wheels these days - and they are doing it on the low CC cruisers. That means a lot of low mileage bikes on the used market.

Look at it as a long term rental. If she likes it, that is great. She will know better of what she wants in her second bike. If she hardly rides it, sell it after a year.

I had my Savage for 1.5 years and 7,000 miles. I turned around and sold it for $200 less than I paid. Not a bad way to ease into the sport.

Check out http://www.suzukisavage.com/ for the S40 version of VTXOA.

I highly recommend the Honda Shadow Spirit 750. I had one and loved it. Great starter bike. It's well balanced and very low seat height. I see them on Cycle Trader all the time in the $4000-4500 price range with almost no miles.

Not to sound a different chord, but I'd suggest you give a long look at a Kawasaki Vulcan 750/800. I purchased a '89 Vulcan 750 for my son for $1,100 this spring. The bike was pretty much stock with 8K miles. It's a light weight, powerful, and easy to ride little machine. Very different from my VTX 1800C . . . but still lots of fun!

Jim

PS: My son had a "thumper" (Savage 650) and he never felt comfortable on the Interstates. No complaints about the Vulcan.

I have a friend with the 800 Vulcan. My sister also had one. Top notch bikes. And not a problem on the interstates. In fact, my friend just took his up to my place in Tennessee over a weekend, on I-75, riding two up, and didn't have any problems.

You're welcome to come take a spin on the Vulcan 750 if you'd like. Might force me to stop unpacking and ride my X.
