I know, some of you are still experiencing 100 degree days, but they've pretty much gone for me. We're in the 40s at night in some spots and the first snow fall is coming in a few weeks. The long riding season is over and now it's just local commutes and weekenders left for me. So, it got me thinking about the summer and my rides.

What has been your best Summer 2006 ride?

I'll start it off ...

On July 24, 2006 (my birthday, by the way) I picked up a 2006 Honda Gold Wing (ABS model) at HDL Ohio (Hey Ralph! Thanks for the service) and headed for the Tail of the Dragon.

The Dragon was wonderful. I have to say that I was not really expecting it to be that good. After all, I live in southern Utah where we have 10,000 foot mountain roads just a few minutes away. But the Dragon was GREAT, and I hope to make it back pretty soon.

From the Dragon I came back through Kentucky and Tennessee toward Ohio for the Honda Homecoming. The Homecoming was pretty good. It was my first major motorcycle event, and I liked what I saw. Just too dang hot is all, but I learned some lessons (like bring shorts and change before walking around the vendor area).

From the Homecoming I had to head back to the real home. This meant I had to cut my trip short by a few days (family medical problem also meant I had to sell the Wing, but that's another story). The trip across the middle of the country was still pretty good. Because of time constraints I had to stay pretty much on the interstates but overall I still saw some good stuff.

Of course I'm planning for more trips soon, but for now I'll settle for the memories of this summers trips.

doc_cj, thanks for sharing both this thread but also your website. I enjoyed seeing your trip pics and reading about your stops.

Very sorry to hear you had to part with that beautiful Wing. I plan on buying a new Wing within the next few months... to keep my X company.

Hope you'll be able to replace the Wing one day soon.

I'm updating the webpage with more information and pics ... thought I'd have it done quicker but life interfered with that plan.

The trip was fun, and I'm a bit surprised we haven't heard from more people on this topic. I guess just riding is a great trip no matter how far you go.

True for the most part.. but I dislike big cities, especially on two wheels.

I've never been to Utah and have only seen Denver in Colorado. I'd enjoy riding both states - perhaps next spring.

Holler when you've added more... would like to continue your adventure with you, even through words and pictures.

The summer is not over yet for me, but I guess my best trip was when we went to the Colopolousa, we circled around the Taos NM, came back into Pagosa Springs CO, Durango, and through Silverton to Ouray. Also known as the "Million Dollar Highway" 550. I'd have to say that it was the most awesome trip thus far this year. We spent the week there riding all through the area, tearing up southwest CO and Utah.

My second best trip was riding through the White mountains of NH, and the Green moutains of Vermont. Both outstanding, especially route 118 just west of the Kangamangus Highway in New Hampshire. It reminded me of the dragon, except there was no one on it. I did not see one vehicle on this road for over 20 miles. My kind of riding. 8)

Never biked through them, but I too love the White Mountains, Notches and Lake Winnie, in NH... spent some very happy times in that state.
