well it finally happened.
I was pulled over for my vertical side mount plate this morning (written warning).
The officer politely explained it had to be mounted vertically.
I asked him from what distance from behind the bike it had to be visible, he called in to check and said there was not a stipulation, just visible from behind w/light, horizontally mounted.

So there ya go -

I'm confused...the link you posted clearly states the "horizontal" requirement. Crap or not, you should be taking these kinds of things out on the legislators who wrote the law instead of the guys who just have to enforce it.

Actually the LEO was right.

"Every registration plate shall at all times be securely fastened in a horizontal position to the vehicle for which it is issued so as to prevent the plate from swinging and at a height of not less than 5 inches from the ground, measuring from the bottom of such plate, in a place and position to be clearly visible and shall be maintained in a condition to be clearly legible, free from any materials that would obstruct the visibility of the plate, including, but not limited to, glass covers and tinted plastic covers. Clear plastic covers are permissible as long as they remain clear and do not obstruct the visibility of the plates. Registration stickers issued as evidence of renewed annual registration shall be attached to registration plates as required by the Secretary of State, and be clearly visible at all times."

I am in violation of this law.

As he stated, it's harder to read with the plate moving up and down when mounted vertically (try it, he's right) than if it is mounted horizontally.

bummer - but, the law is the law - the good news is, he had no problem with my rear tail lamp (flushed cateye with integrated turn signals).
It was something I was concerned about (actually, it's what I thought he was pulling me over for).

I forgot how far the taillamp and signals have to be visible behind the vehicle. I would think that is more inportant than the way a plate is mounted.

No problem on visibility - I was more worried about the integration (the turns being located so close to the tail)
Visibility of the high intesity LED lamps is rated in miles...it is one bright MoFo

Yes lets forget about the illegal immigrants, drug dealers, rapist, murders. Lets worry about which way a license plate is mounted, that is so much more important. Maybe we should all just flip our plates over, they would still be horizontal, the police would just need to stand on there head to read them!!!!!

I think that might violate the:

"maintained in a condition to be clearly legible"

but it would be funny nonetheless.

Headlights and tail lights must be visible from 500 feet. The rear registration light can only be white and must be visible from 50 feet.

Wasn't Timothy McVeigh stopped and arrested by an Oklahoma Highway trooper... for a license plate violation? Three days later, while still in jail, McVeigh was identified as the suspect.

Hmmm, glad the trooper had nothing better to do than ignore the seemingly harmless license plate violation.

If your bike was a harley, you could just lay the bike on the side and the plate would be legal......and "what8 upside down could be mistaken for "8them"....JOKE
