How much should I expect to pay for the "recommended" service at 600 miles. Bike is 2004 1300C. I previously did my own service but don't want to F up a new machine.

Now having said that, at the 600 mile mark I adjusted the valves and I'm glad I did. Looks like your valves were adjusted/checked as well. For your money you should have a feeling of confidence that the bike is as it should be and (hopefully) operating at its peak.

If you're mechanically inclined, save yourself the money and do the valves yourself.

There is a 600 mile service for the 1300. It is the 1800 that has no recommended service at 600. For the 1300 the ususal "inspect" applies to most items and you also have a valve clearance inspection (and adjustment usually it seems) and an oil and filter change according to the service manual.

My mechanical abilities extend to the confidence that I should leave the maintenence to professionals. I am fully able to put gas in the tank and air in the tires, however.

That means you've got more ability than my dad does ... and he rides!! I've seen guys "clean" their batteries .... by pulling the caps and flushing the cells out!! Funny thing is, they think they're fully competent.

So I suspect your in good company there bud! With the electronic ignitions these days, gone are the shade tree mechanics. Remember polishing the points, setting the gap, adjusting the timing? Man those were the bad ole days! :)
