Good Day everyone -- Working on Basic Trip plan as follows : San Deigo to Barstow -- route 66 trip to Oklahoma -- Oklahoma to Roanoke VA -- VA to Coudersport PA -- Coudersport PA to Horseheads NY -- NY to Montana -- Montana to Oregon -- Oregon back to San Diego.
I did have a support vehicle until recently when the driver had the future change. So now it is looking like a SOLO trip.. just me and my VTX1300. Would like others to join along the way if possible.. even if only for a short distance -- I will keep posting as things progress...!
Also, any Zumo users out there?? I am looking into this GPS and navigator, but it does not work with any of the cell phone from my provider, Sprint. Any suggestions?

Please be aware there is a GPS/Electronics subforum on this website.
That being said, there's a number of us who have pre-ordered the Zumo and will have them imminently. I happen to have Sprint as my carrier too and I feel your pain. I also just purchased the Nuvi 660 last month -- it has the same technology as the Zumo and shares the same phone compatibility list as the Zumo.
In any event, I have read on two separate occasions that the Samsung A-920 will pair with the Nuvi (/Zumo) even thought it does not officially appear on Garmin's Bluetooth compatibility list, but certainly don't hold me to it. Of course Garmin is first to admit that their list is absolutely not all-inclusive. I may very well try that one myself; if it does not work I may very well switch to a Cingular or T-Mobile phone/carrier; you might have noticed they are hugely compatible.

There are some virgina X riders planning a trip from San Fransico back to Va. in may but I don't know what route they are taking, check the Va state board. If your plans were to start in may. Good luck. :D

If you happen to ride through ND on the way from NY to MT, give me a shout and I will be happy to ride with you for a bit! We have a great Natl Park here with a loop road that is super fun on the bikes.

If you modify your trip slightly, you will have a Border to Border, Ocean to Ocean run. Don

If you do the 66 part of it you wll be in Amarillo, give me a hollar.I'll ride a way with ya.
Interesting. I'm riding the opposite way in June, from NY to San Diego, then up to Washington State before heading back east. Isn't the thought of riding long stretches exciting? Of course there will be several stops in between the target areas. I always re-shoe the bike shortly before a long trip. Good luck.

Tennessee is between Oklahoma and Virginia. PM when you know the dates for this section of your trip. Live in Middle TN, if you find yourself in need of a place to "sit a spell".

If you are going to Horseheads NY give the CNY guys a holler we are just down the road and there are things going on every week here.
Most of all on July 28 is our Stugeon '07 Run. This is starting and stopping at O'Malley's just north of Ithaca. Check it out and let us know what is going on. Tros

 I sincerely appreciate those who have replied, offered to ride and even allow me to sit a spell. Thank You Greatly!!
However, my employer, even with 6 months notice refuses to allow me enough time to complete this trip on my X.
However, I am still working on this, and even maybe an alternate plan of taking the X in a trailer. this would help me to make better time to get where I want to go...
If, at minimum, I WILL get some good multi day rides in my location, the southwest.

Well, I have yet to receive a definitive "NO!" from my employer. I am working with them..and unfortunately I may have to to take a shorter ride to get them to say yes. I plan still to go coast state to coast state, however the north south aspect of the run will have to go by the wayside.
In the meantime.. I continue to plan.. and am certain to take note of all the replies and offers!! This board has been great that respect!!
Tom Cat.. Amarillo may be on the map for both directions... Tennhome.. Will be going thru Tenn but will have to see what the timing is on the run. Tros66.. I am originally from Horseheads... will DEFINITELY drop by!! I hope to post the final directions 1 month prior.
Oh.. and got a Zumo off E-Bay. That little bugger is amazing. Love listening to my MP3 via the Bluetooth Now to just find the phone from sprint that will link by the Bluetooth...

Keep me posted, depending on your dates I may be able to join you for part of the ride. By the way, if you are going to be anywhere near CO for the July 4th holiday you should plan to spend a couple of days in Denver and join us for the VTX rides. My daughter and I rode out from PA in 2004 to join in. It was a great time with some of the best people you'll ever meet from all over the country! We're planning to be there this year too. Oh my goodness! My employer said yes!
So now comes the planning, the preparation of a bike, where ago, what to take, and so much more.
My trip will be after the July 4th holiday with me leaving the San Diego area on about July 10th. From there, I am immediately in confusion as I can't decide to go to Phoenix to see a friend, or go to the Grand Canyon to see the view. So much to figure out and do. :!:
Again, I appreciate that everyone has responded in such a positive manner. I hope to plan my route so they can visit as many people and see as many sites as possible. With the weather being the most variable factor, I know it will be a day to day trip schedule. :a13: WhaaaHoo!! Gonna be great fun!!!
OK so tomorrow I send off the seats to AMSS to get Gel/Memory Foam installed... Then handlebar risers... that should complete my comfort issues.
OK so I have a SissyBar.. and am looking at the Tombstone pack to give me a backrest too... anyone have experince with the pack? Then a pack for the Luggage Rack.. I am open to suggestions on that. (Trying to decied If I'm a gonna take a bedroll too..)
Oh the vanity!! Ordered custom license plate for the trip(Well, for the bike :D )... "X NIGMA"

Congrats on the approval, now the fun starts!!!
I posted a link on another post about luggage.

There are a couple of photos for the pack I use, Nelson Riggs - GREAT stuff!! If you have any questions about things to pack check out the packing list referenced in the link, it will give you lots of ideas. Don't get overwhelmed, like lots of folks pointed out that is one huge list. By going through it you can cut it down a lot because some stuff just doesn't make sense to bring on a shorter trip.
One thing that is NOT on that list that you should really consider are a pump and tire repair kit. I put in a link for options on that post as well. So did another guy with another great pump choice, quite a bit more expensive but looks indestructible.
One thing you should DEFINITELY do is to be sure you do the ground fix referenced here!!

Another suggestion, if you aren't running synthetic consider changing (I use Mobil Gold Cap but looks of folks prefer others). That way you won't have to change your oil on the road. You can bring an extra filter and change that if you go over 3k miles and just add a bit of oil as needed.
Feel free to PM or email if you have any questions or just want to brainstorm about how to prep and pack.

When in June are you leaving? I am also going from San Diego to Washington. We will be travelling the same direction.
Exact date is not set for the leg up to Washington but it will be around mid-June, the 17th or so. What part of Washington?

I am leaving Colorado for San Diego about June 8. I want to ride up the coast to Port Angeles, WA, then maybe take the ferry to Victoria, BC, then to Glacier National Park, then back to Coloradical.
I may be ahead of you, it appears. But as the date draws closer, we should keep in touch (and anyone else that may be contemplating this ride) in case we are in the same place and could meet up.
We'll (2) be leaving New York State on June 9 for San Diego with stops in KS and Las Vegas and a piece of Rt. 66 before reaching SD. Then up to Washington through some mountain areas up to the Okangan Valley area. Glacier Nat. Park is fairly close. Seattle is a maybe at this time. On the return to New York the plan is to ride in North Dakota and follow a northern pathway, depending on prevailing conditions. Of course, this all is at the theoretical stage as far as specifics.
We have no plans on anything Canada. I spent rode through parts of Alberta, BC and the Yukon Territory the summer of '05 on a trip to Alaska. Yes, we should stay in touch.

+1 on the Nelson Rigg Luggage. I did a ride starting in College Station, TX up to Albuquerque, Rte 66 to Santa Monica, then up through Vegas, Souther Utah, Southern Colorado, OK,and back to College Station. I used the CTB 900 pack. Comes with a seperate bag for a bedroll that sits on top. I put it on the passenger seat and it gave me an awesome backrest. nelson Rigg stuff is top notch in my opinion.
Just one thing, if you are trying to stick to the old route 66 as much as possible, the stretch West of Amboy is in horrible disrepair. After about an hour or taking a beating, my buddy and I had to jump over to the interstate. It was sad the condition it was in.
