View Full Version : Zumo all the rage...

A couple of you know that about 2 months ago I started a Yahoo Forum for Zumo Owners. I haven't done anything with it, although there are a couple of people that have joined. In fact, when I started it...I did not know if I would even use it at all, but it looks like there will be (at least at first) a lot of information to exchange about the Zumo.
I also have the ability to HOST my own Zumo Forum on my own website that would be specific for the Zumo.
Either way it would limit the Zumo exclusive traffic on here and give the forum back to the other GPS's, MP3's, and Audiophiles presently visiting this forum.
So, I am just asking...but would it serve ANY purpose at all having a separate Zumo Forum? It doesn't matter to me either way...I would want it to be "self" run with minimal moderation on my part.
Just a thought...

I think having a forum would be great. I know I'll need plenty of help and ask alot of stupid questions. If you lead, I will follow. Or something like that.

I'm all for a specific Zumo forum site. The VTX view is a small portion. You just know that all the BMW folks will have tons of input. :D

I remember when you started that Yahoo group several months back. I posted on it a couple of times and a couple of others chimed in, but I never saw enough foot traffic there to think it was the premier place to exchange Zumo information.
In practice that place has been here on the VTXOA -- and believe me, I've canvassed many motorcycle forums (the GL1800 board distantly followed by a BMW site have been the other stand-outs). I'm happy enough to keep things here. I wouldn't worry too much about us Zumocrats dominating this specific board; most of these preliminary what-if postings we've been making were because we didn't have our Zumoes or a manual and were doing a lot of speculating. So that's going to die out. While this is a motorcycle-friendly GPS that is here to stay there will probably be only slightly more postings in the future than there are with other popular GPS's (Iways, Garmin 27/28xx series, Tom-Toms, etc.) -- this is also why we should welcome and embrace using this board for information about the Zumo.
HOWEVER, this is NOT to say that the Yahoo board should be closed down. The big unknown is that in the next 30 days there will be thousands of Zumo owners and probably a good number of them will gravitate to Yahoo, wondering if there's a centralized forum to exchange info. Of course I could be wrong; let's face it, the way it was marketed, the Zumo is a niche market, and won't enjoy the production run of say, the wildly-popular Nuvi 660 which is just taking off and has earned countless editorial and technical accolades in the last 2 months.
As for Zumo info on your own website, bless you for the offer, but I am fairly certain that folks would be more comfortable with the Yahoo forum.
Ultimately my vote would be to let it ride for a month or two until the initial wave of Zumoists receive their models and wish to converse about them, and by then we can see the direction of information flow.

Just Google "Yahoo Forums" then when there use their search box for "Garmin Zumo." You'll find it.

Here is the Yahoo Forum...
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/zumo550/
However, I tend to agree with Blade...Maybe I should wait a few weeks to see if the "fervor" dies down..otherwise it would be a lot of work for nothing.
I have several other interests besides the Zumo and Motorcycles (although I am VERY passionate about those interests), so maintaining a forum would be a difficult tasks to do. That is why I would HOPE for a self-maintaining forum if possible.
I did do some work on one my website, but again it is not ready and I am wonder about putting a lot of work into it and the questions and enthusiasm dying down and it just becoming dormant.
So the choices are:
1. Stay here
2. Yahoo Zumo Forum http://groups.yahoo.com/group/zumo550/
3. Razorbiker Zumo Forum http://www.razorbiker.com/zumo
So I appreciate everyone wanting to do this, but I also appreciate the point of view from Blade...he makes some pretty good points...plus this forum is convenient...
Anymore thoughts?

Seriously Wally... I would love a site devoted to biker electronics. Maybe the Zumo is a bit too specific and short lived, but a non bike brand specific site devoted to rolling electronics would rock!

3. Razorbiker Zumo Forum http://www.razorbiker.com/zumo
Geez Wally, YOUR Razorbiker Zumo Forum is SWEET! GREAT job! It needs some patronage of course; but now that you linked it out and I saw it, THAT's the one I'd like to see work. It really is a shame that information on the Zumo by the biker world as a whole will probably be found piecemeal on various sites.

Isn't that what this forum is? The GPS/MP3/Electronic motorcycle devices forum. I know it is only frequented by VTX riders, but...

I see your point, but this forum is for all GPS's and also is limited to only VTX riders that own Zumos...there are other bikes out there as well as I assume some Zumo owners won't even own a bike (not many but a few).
I just thought I would offer a specific forum for that...it may or may not work, but it will be fun either way.

Actually I bought the Gamin 2730 before this puppy was announced and had an offer to buy my unit so I could buy the Zumo so I may still sell it and buy one if I find out that Blade gives it his blessing!!!

Ha -- Whether I 'pope' the Zumo or not (and haven't I been all this time...?) you are now holding on to a hot commodity. Believe it or not the much-sought after 2730 is now DISCONTINUED! Eating into the 2820's profits no doubt. You'll have no trouble selling it to those who can no longer buy one new.

Razor, I didn't intend to slam your idea or offend you. I was just razzin' HotFix a bit. If your site is gonna be just for Zumo's on Bikes, then I'm sure it will go over big with the intended audience. HotFix seemed to be broadening the scope, however, to be just what this already is.

Not a problem Orange...Like I said earlier, it will be fun either way. It is a great way to learn about the unit though...even if the forum doesn't work out in the long run.
Thanks for your input though.

True. Maybe ANY biker with a GPS or stereo is a bit broad for one man to run.

The longer I have the 2730 the better I like it. I just found out how to select certain factors in determining avoidance setup features so now Jill tells me to stay on the interstate instead of getting me off of the interstate onto small back roads. Garmin just doesn't have a very detailed manual to tell you how to do all of these things that you have to learn via other people or by trial & error.

I have the 2720,2730 and the Street pilot III. All are great units. The old III may be slow however the map details were superior to all that have followed  . The roads on the newer models are too wide to label very many and 3d is a novelty. Garmin produces what is popular
I use the 2730 on the VTX because of the touch screen and mp3 player (thanks Napster  ). The 2720 is for the cage and the III is the heavy artillery backup.
