new to GPS's but want 1 for my vehicle and that I can use on my VTX when I go to the mountains of Tenn , so I don't get lost. So I need one that is motorcycle friendly yet good for my truck/suv.

I first thought Garman
2720 then 2730 and

a digiwalker310

I just dont want to spend $1000 for a Zumo.

Plus this is my 1st GPS

I am working on this now too. I am thinking the Garmin c330 or 340. I found them as low as $311. Not a bad price.

Hey Guys, check out this comparison chart. Only Garmin products though. And when you decide use Froogle and search for cheapest price from reputable dealer.

Even with that link you gave they do not rate the c330 or 340. I rule out both the quest model (they do not have voice) or the 2700 models (no battery). So I am still not sure what to go with.

I really can't help much as I'm new to this GPS thing. I do like my Zumo though. HotFix or Blade may be able to help you more. They seem like old hands and have experience with several models as well.

Of course you can still purchase a Zumo for well under $800 (just go to Froogle.com and do a search...).

But there ARE a lot of extra bells and whistles on a Zumo. Frankly, I'd simply stick with Garmin -- you can't go wrong. Go to their website and peruse around. There are models with or without Bluetooth, XM, MP3, text to speech, just about every attribute may be tailored to your needs. Any of the 26xx, 27xx or 28xx series Garmins are superb. The newer technology StreetPilots mentioned above or Nuvi's could be perfect for you as well -- the latter group I mention are quite portable too (yet sacrifice nothing in quality or function).

The Zumo happens to be VERY motorcycle-friendly. But it would be inaccurate to call the other models unfriendly. And frankly, these days (as opposed to say, in 2002 or 3) you have tons of GPS models to choose from, and unless you really need (or AHEM, want) a Zumo, there's honestly no need to pay over say, $600 for your first GPS.

Have fun, enjoy, and when you DO get your GPS, GET LOST!!!! (little navigational humor).

I too am looking for GPS unit, Gosh so many units and features...

Fist how re you going to use it?
by itself, standalone.
or
in conjunction with other equipment...
Radio, cob, GMRS, FRS
Am/fm/cd
mp3 player
intercom
weather alert
radar

I have been looking into which unit/combination of units work best and cost least for total package. I haven’t finished yet with this analysis.
So many have multiple uses.
I will post more later when I get it all sorted.
So make a list of all the gizmos you would like and go from there.
One I am looking at is:
Magellan 2200T (waterproof, MP3, small size, voice directions, can add off road maps easily, Dc power)cons, Not bluetooth enabled
Garmin C330
Garmin 2820

Mixer/Integrator:
Autocomm Active-plus
Autocomm Pro

bike to bike:
CB lot of static
Kenwood freetalk XL GMRS/FRS 1 watt ouput
Kenwood Freetalk XL GMRS/FRS 2 watt output

Choices choices OH MY!!
hope this didn’t muddy the water too much

Just a Note FYI , I have NOT come up with any bluetooth units that have both VOX and Stereo. ( so you can listen to tunes and music with out a cord hanging out of your helmet)MaxB

Nav system for both the car and bike for under $300. Navigates just as good as a Zumo - just without all the cool routing functions (and the other nifty Zumo stuff).

Garmin C320 (128MB will hold ~7 states, 1GB card up grade is $15 if you need it)

Ram Mount for the bike

Sandwich bag and wife's hair scruncy when it rains

I covered it here for those not wanting to go the Zumo route.

You need to define what you need or want and what you don't need or want. Do you want or need XM Radio??? Do you want or need BlueTooth? Does it need to be water proof??? I would think you would want it to be waterproof if on a bike.

I have the 2730 and just love it because I want XM Radio and the antenna is included for FREE (a $250 value). I didn't want or need BT so I didn't go with the 2820. I am not sure about the ZUMO as there are some deficiencies being reported and I want to wait and see just how great this unit is. Do you need to to go hiking? Then maybe you need a battery.

I can transfer my 2730 to my car very easily and use it with the beanbag mount. I just plug it into the accessory connector to get power and I can hear the directions from the attached speaker. Great for my needs but maybe not for yours.

Define what your needs & desires are and then go to Garmin's website and find one that meets those needs.

I found this 2200t magellan on ebay.

here's one from Shipdog: $410.95 otd

It has a pretty good writeups, and its waterproof and you can add terrain mapping for 50 bucks. So you can use it whilst trekking the great outdoors or when you get moonshined up and find way back to campsite in WV trip LOL
hope this helps...

I think this is the one I'm getting.

I use the Garmin 2720 in my car and on the bike. Works pretty good on both, and easy to transfer, after I installed a waterproof cigarette lighter receptacle on the bike.

I first started using the Garmen 2610 when I went down to New Orleans right after Katrina hit. On my next two tours down there, I used the 2720. The GPS was invaluable for finding my way around. I liked it so much I bought one for myself.

I got the Garmin 276C for $450 (with a $100 rebate). It's got an honest 8-hour battery life, good sized screen, water resistance, and allows uploading of more detailed street charts. The only thing it doesn't have is altitude/barometric capability but that was a distant requirement to ease of use, reliability, water resistance, and screen size.
