Been thinking about doing an Iron Butt 1000 for some time and I think I'm up to it sometine in January. For me it's Jupiter, Jacksonville, Tallahassee. Gainesville, Naples, Ft. Lauderdale back to Jupiter in under 24 hours. I figured the trip (1038 miles according to AAA) should take about 18 hours with gas stops and relief stops. If I leave about midnight on a Saturday I will be back home at about 6:00 pm the same day. Anyone interested in joining me?

WHY, beause no too many others would do it. I have done two one succesfully and one were we dint make the time because of tire problems. January may be too early in the year because of cold weather specialy at night and that far north. we did one in November and it got pretty interesting up in Georgia at night and in the rain. LOOK FOR A POST FROM vtxpirate he even had a spread sheet done of all stops, miles ect. will consider joining you JORGE.

Been planning a ride also. The SE region IBA meet is in Jax in March and I'd like to attend.

My route: FTL, Jax (around Jax - I95-I295-I10), I10W somewhere W of Talahassee, I-75S back to I595 to FTL. Looks like about 1048 miles. Did 850 a couple of weeks ago in 16 hours (of which 8 hours was back road riding) so I know I can do it. It's also all in-state and that qualifies as another award.

My plans call for an 0300 ksu, watching the sunrise to Jacksonville, sun at my back to Talahassee, and then over my right shoulder as I head home. That would put me back home around 9pm. I've done some early morning test runs and found the traffic light, the weather cool but not cold, and enough gas stations open to make filling up doable. It would also keep the night riding to a few hours and maximize the daylight riding. Unfortunately, the route is all interstate. :(

After that the stations should be open for the rest of the ride. I've got an Excel spreadsheet that lays it out pretty well (let me know if you're interested and I'll post a link). I'd probably start early Sat. morning so I could get some sleep before starting and not be forced to ride at 0-dark-30 on a Sunday morning when the odds of gas stations being closed are higher (imho).

I figure doing 5-10 over and taking an extra 10 minute break every other fill works for me. I'm still researching gas stations but thought the best idea would be to head North on the Turnpike (gas stations guaranteed to be open) or do a fill in Ft. Pierce. I'll also have a GPS with me to provide added verification of the route as well as info and timing.

I plan on travelling light. Full protection, rain and cold weather liners, couple of pairs of gloves, snacks, iPod, SunPass, camera, small tool kit w tire repair and compressor, and a few other items. If it won't fit into the saddle bags I won't be carrying it. I'm also planning no big meals, just snacks for the trip (I get a bit sleepy after a big meal) and wil celebrate after the ride.

Might be fun with a couple of other riders. I'd like to it in Jan/Feb as that's about the best weather time (less rain, fog, cagers).

My apologies Strider. Got to ratchet jawing outside and I heard the words; Roy's and Nothin' Fancy so I followed the group down 441. We ended up at Roy's.

As for the BB1000, I'm still planning on doing it. And soon. I see from the posts that kbobb is also interested.

Hey JorgeX1800,

Now look here if you go, you know I am going to have to tag along too.
Last one we went on was in March, and we did it on a Saturday morning, and I think everyone got back like Sunday morning. Friday would not be good for me. I work on Friday's. Saturdays would be good. But in January? I think that might be a little cool. But hey I am a hard core rider, and I just got a new Corbin Dual Tour Seat and Back Rest. I just need to clear it with the little lady.

I've done a few 0-dark-30 starts and the temps in December were around 62-64 degrees. Leaving well before dawn gives you maximum daylight, warm temperatures, and a cooling down time on the homeward leg. Evening temps should be warmer than the start, but that's why you dress in layers.

Also, depending on the route (inland vs coastal) the temps can be a 10 degree difference.

Frankly, I'm more concerned about a lot more than the cool temps.

indeed...we do live in Florida...what cool temps? November 2 years ago, myself, Jorge, Ted, Ted, and 5 others made an iron butt. The main group started in Jupiter at 6am on Saturday. Picked 3 of us up in fort Lauderdale. We road to Naples, Gainsville, 75 to Tiffton Ga. across to Brunswick, down 95. They stopped in Jupiter the rest of us finished in Ft Laud. Because of many factors, like people taking to much time at the gas stops, break downs and other unscheduled stops, rain from Jax to Daytona, etc.... reallity says 22-23 hours.

During that ride we went from 75 degrees in the am, by the time we got to tampa the temps dropped into the 60's. In Tifton we were getting lite rain and the temps dropped into the 40's, by the time we got to brunswick we were popcycles, and we spent nearly an hourly at the waffle house just warming up. Then the real rain started with torential downpoors as it warmmed up. We were in the rain all the way to Daytona. We really had to slow down, and even stop in a couple places because we couldn't see, and we got seperated into two groups.

Yes Kevin, It can get miserable at nite along that latitude. If you're gonna do the Butt, follow the website suggestions.

I'm not sure that Gary's route makes the miles though.

I'll go.

looking forward to it...

My route was similar to Dog's, but I side stepped I-75, from Tallahassee down to Tampa, for US-19 (and/or another road)...was thinking of seeing the rural sites along that way...the GPS predicts 1048 @ 14/15 hrs...with a plus factor of 20% (for breaks, gas, etc...) I think 18 hrs should do it...

Kevin's and my route agree with two exceptions. He thinks I-95 is better heading north than the Turnpike and he wants to come back on US-19 while I favor I-75/Turnpike for the homeward leg. Depending on the day and time, I'm game for a bit of pleasure between bouts of boredom. :D

I'm still plotting it on Google and other route sites. The mileage looks like 1048 +/- 5 miles so the distance and basic route looks good. Riding along the coast would be warmer (man, it gets cold in those depressions inland) but I-95 S of WPB is not for the weak of heart imho. Gas shouldn't be a problem, just finding one near the interstate that takes either credit or debit and gives accurate receipts (needed to prove the route and times).

Well guys, here is my deal. I'm leaving Jupiter at 5:00am on Saturday, Jan 13th. The route is from Jupiter to Jacksonvile on I-95, to Tallahassee on I-10, back on I-10 to I-75 to Naples to Ft. Lauderdale and I-95 back to Jupiter. According to AAA it's 1038 miles. I expect to run between 75 and 80 MPH and stop every 125t to 140 miles for fuel and npit stops. I'm planning to stay on interstates because this is a challenge of miles and time and the scenery doesn't mean much to me. If I can average 60mph it should take about 18 hours. Should be home about 11:00pm Saturday.

If the temp is above freezing, it isn't snowing in North Florida or raining cats and dogs, I'm going to make my ride. Anyone interested in going with me? If not, I rode solo fron Palm Springs, CA back to Jupiter in April and it worked out fine. Anyone is welcome to experience the ride. Lets get together if you want to go.

For some perverse reason I'm also leaving on the 13th at 0300 from FTL heading basically the same route as Cool Pop and others. The ST has a 250-280 mile range (7.7gal is very nice) so my stops will be every 240-250 miles. I'll also be riding 5-10 over as that seems the best spot for maximum range and minimal tickets.

Hey Doug - I can meet you at tje Jupiter exit at around 4:00 am and we can boogie together although I can't go much more than 140 miles without gas. I'll have my cup holder for coffee or soda, my pockets filled with beef jerkey bits, my xmradio for tunes and my GPs to keep me legal. I travel light and certainly don't forsee any problems. Adendum to RJC6886's post. We did 1033 miles (by GPS) in 16 hours and 5 minutes. Averaged 65 mph.

I also went the extra 537 today Jupiter to Gainesville and back to make the total 1570 miles in 36 hours. Now I'll have an Iron Butt 1500 and a Saddle Sore 1000 under my belt. I should have done the 50 Hours coast to coast when I came back from California in April. Oh well, next time.

Rich and I had a very good ride together. Perfect weather. I ran into rain a couple of times today on the way back from Gainesville. Rain gear on, rain gear off three times.

Thanks Rich - I'll ride with you anytime.

Congrats on the double award.

We talked about it during the ride but it didn't happen. On reflection, I'd recommend shooting for the 1500/36 as the planning requires few additional details (and a hotel room) and you're already 2/3 done. I'm already planning a 1500 but don't know if it'll be in-state i.e. Ft. Lauderdale-Jax-Pensacola-Ft. Lauderdale or a bit further afield such as Ft. Lauderdale-Atlanta-Leesburg-Ft. Lauderdale or Ft. Lauderdale-Nashville-Ft. Lauderdale (to see dpearly and cajundude).

For those contemplating a ride, it's quite doable. Planning, good weather, and a positive atitude will get you the award. Most of the ride was quite pleasant; the 53F portion (with everything we had on) wasn't. We had no problem finding gas and only one close call.

btw kbobb completed his SS1000 before heading to the tech session (which is good as they IBA recommends no mechanical changes/additions before a ride).

RJC6886 - let me know if you're serious about the 50CC. It's been nagging me for months.
