VIDALIA — A ground search and an air search around the home of a Toombs County man who has been missing since Jan. 20 has yielded nothing new to authorities and a search is still on. Mark Edward Newton, 32, was last seen turning onto E. Garrett Road off Rock Springs Road in Toombs County Jan. 20 and no one has had any contact with him since. Newton was riding a black 2003 Honda VTX motorcycle bearing a Georgia license plate number 3207 MV. He was wearing a black motorcycle jacket and black chaps with a reflective stripe on the sleeves and on the side of the pants. He was wearing a black full-face helmet. Newton stands five feet nine inches tall and weighs about 180 pounds. He has blond hair and blue eyes. “It’s like he vanished into thin air, “ said a Toombs County spokeswoman. She said a ground search conducted with help from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and an air search conducted with help from the Georgia State Patrol has yielded nothing. The woman said she could not give out anymore details of the investigation citing that only Toombs Sheriff Alvie (Junior) Kight is releasing that and he was not in at press time Friday. Rumors are flying in Toombs County concerning the disappearance, but none of them could be verified. Newton is married and has a 4-year-old son and a 4-month-old baby. He is employed with YKK AP America in Dublin. YKK AP America Human Resource Manager Rick Hudson said late Friday that Newton has worked at the Dublin facility for almost two years as a full-time employee. Hudson had no information about Newton’s possible whereabouts. He just voiced the company’s concern for him and his family. “The family is all in our prayers,” said Hudson. Toombs Sheriff’s spokeswoman said people there are also concerned for the pain Newton’s family, especially his small son who doesn’t understand his daddy’s disappearance, is going through. She said hopes are to get out the information that he is missing and maybe someone will have information that will help authorities. “Maybe somebody he works with might can come up with some clues. Maybe he told them something or was close to someone there who knows something,” she said.

Sad Update:
Toombs man found dead in Wheeler
Autopsy shows Newton died of self-inflicted gunshot wound
01/29/07
By STEPHANIE MILLER
A Toombs County man who has been missing since Jan. 20 was found dead in Wheeler County Friday. According to Special Agent in Charge of the Eastman Office of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Greg Harvey, Mark Edward Newton, 32, was found at an abandoned house off state Route 19 near Glenwood Friday at about 7 p.m. Harvey described the location of the abandoned house and said two men found Newton. “Two guys were checking out the house for the purpose of renting it,” said Harvey of the secluded location. “They walked around back and found him with the motorcycle he used to travel there on.” Harvey said the GBI had not been involved in the search for Newton, but the Wheeler County Sheriff’s Department called them to look into Newton’s death. The autopsy report has shown that Newton died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. “I’m not getting into speculating,” said Harvey when asked if he had any idea why Newton may have wanted to take his own life. Newton was reported to have left his home on a black 2003 Honda VTX motorcycle, wearing black chaps and a black motorcycle jacket with a reflective strip down the side of the pants and the jacket. He was wearing a black full-face helmet. Newton had been a YKK AP America employee at the Dublin Plant for about two years. An air and ground search was done around his home, but yielded nothing. The location where Newton was found was not far from Toombs County on a cut-through road that runs from the river bridge in Toombs County to Ga. 19. Funeral plans for Newton were not known at presstime.
