I have 16 girl and a 12 boy.
I'm thinking Savannah or Richmond Hill just south of it.
Anything you guys have to tell be about the area?
How are the high schools? etc...
Thinking of doing a leather shop .
wiffie does real estate agent.
Any advice apreciated. Thanks in advance!

moved from Jersey 6 years ago and tripled the size of my home for $1000 more... come on down - - the water is warm!!! you won't regret it but just keep in mind that the grocery stores here are nothing like back home... we don't have mozarella, italian meats, etc. here easily accessible and the restaurants are not NJ/NY restaurants... but the quality of life is great!

the Savannah area is Great! we moved down here in 03 and love it. Bryn county and Effingham county are the best for schools. Effingham is cheaper on property taxes. Im sure my other half (GaGirlTrixie) will chime in on this on.
Come on down.. we need more X's around here!

Last night was in the 20's did aPgr ride today, high was 37*.
Thank you all for making me feel welcome. How's the Savana area with retail shops like a leather store? Any around?
I'd like to swing by after Daytona, get the wife down there and spend a few days.
Any suggestions on where to stay where to look for a home?

LilJohnie I'm more into the Greek cuisine, feta cheese  the wiffie is the Italian. And I do fish year round. First week of January I was 30 miles off shore picking up monster Seabass of a wreck.
How's the boating down there? Lots of destinations I'll bet. I have a family boat to spend the night on and a Mako250 for fishing.

BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!! (If it's girl on girl, there's a bunch of extra bucks to be made there!)

Yes, the schools' leave alot to be desired here, compared to NY, but we have moved up to 48th! Woo hoo (That's sarcasm, y'all!) They don't have an art program in the elementary level here, none..... crayons, that's art.
I moved to VA from NY when I was in grade school (We're talking the 1970's here  ). I learned Spanish and cursive writing in Kindergarten. When I went to 1st grade, they hadn't even learned to print yet, and Spanish wasn't offered until High School. Our son is in 4th grade. I take him to art classes every week after school in Savannah (we live in Effingham Co.) through the Dept. of Leisure Services. Field trips leave a lot to be desired. I take him to as many educational and cultural events as I can possibly find, on my own, to supplemnt his education.

Yes, when I would go visit my family in NY when I grew up, I would have the back of my car loaded on the way back South with imported tomatoes, a half a wheel of Locatelli cheese, and a few loaves of crusty bread. (I blew out a tire one time on the way home in MD. Used the wheel of cheese to chock the other tire while I changed the flat. I never complained to my mother's requests again!). And my cousin' never understood why I would go out for pizza nearly every meal while I was up there.. until they've all moved now to NV and CA now....

All that being said, I love my life down here. I sometimes forget to lock my car at night, and it, and all of it's contents, have been there the next morning. My son leaves his bike in the driveway on a regular basis... same bike for the last 3 years.... I can walk my dog at 11:00 at night, unarmed.... My aunt lives out in Rockville Centre. I pay less of property tax yearly that she pays quarterly. My "heavy winter jacket" is a zip up fleece jacket (I've worn it 3x this year, I think..... luckily, it's pink....) When I go to the grocery store, the clerks smile, ask my how I am, we exchange converation, and they smile and tell me my total, and hand me my change. When I pass people on the street walking, we always smile and say "Hello. How are you". (My son still does this when we go back to Queens sometimes, force of habit. People look at him funny up there...)

About RE.... the Hinesville/Richmond Hill area is very transient, with the Army base down there. The 3rd ID is just starting to deploy, so they are predicting the market will be softening here for the next year or so. The Bluffton/Hilton Head (SC) area is booming!!. with all of the baby boomers retiring there. She might want to look at licensing up there, also.

nice boats, huh??? boating is great year round there too... I'm outside of ATL so I cannot speak directly to Savannah - - we have some seasons here but not like NJ/NY... those guys down in Sav can ride literally all year without a problem... we ride in the winter here but it's cold sometimes... me, I like the mountains and ATL has it - - North GA has BEAUTIFUL country with loads of mountains and twisties... but Sav has the weather and the beach and the fishing!!! (and Flamingoes!) How DOES she get that color???? wtf?

Greek food is in ATL - - and lots of it (not as much as NY or CHI-town, but lots of Greeks here... ) not sure about Sav - - my point is that since it's not as big of a melting pot, just don;t expect to be able to find all of those other cuisines we take for granted living in the NY metro area....

now I know I will offend with the next statement - - forgive me it's just my $.02...

Chinese food and pizza suck down here... PERIOD!

But like I said, come on down the water (and the people) are warm - - you'l love it!

Hooky, there is a large Greek community here, so Greek food is ok to find. There is even a Greek Orthodox church here (I remember reading why there is a large Greek community, but can't reacll the reason right off the bat... Big influx in the mid 1800's for some reason..) They even have a yearly Greek festival in Oct., during our fall season of festivals here... The Seafood Festivals (3 of them to be exact- One in SAV, on in Richmond Hill, one on Tybee Island), Greek Festival, each county has a festival, the sheep festival (let the jokes begin..) is sometime (might be March, during the Spring Festival season)-wouldn't make sense to sheer them before winter...), a few others that I can't think of off of the top of my head, but I know they are there...!)

Yep, you got your pick of boating down here- ocean, rivers, salt marshes (when the tide is right), a couple of good size lakes are within 3 hours from here, if yer craving that... Lots of public boat launches, marninas.

Give us a yell, me and/or hubby will be glad to meet with yall when you're passing through, show ya around, answer questions (whatever we can.... or try to find answers we don't know off the top of our heads..)
The motorcycle riding around is kinda boring, not many twisties (I still have those pesky whiskers on the outside edges of my tires... I'll be neding a trip to the Official Removal Sight on 129 soon! ;)), but, it is doable year round, and we are within 6 hours of Daytona, via the local back roads (17 & A1A), not super slab (4 hours on Super Slab)

Hey Hooky,

I moved from the snowbelt in western NY to northwest GA last year. GA is like a 3rd world state. Get ready for culture shock!

I'm retired and don't have to worry about schools. My kids got a great education in NY. Some school districts are better than others down here. I picked out where to live by the high rated schools, but I don't expect them to be as good as where I lived in NY. My girlfriend has gone back to school and her son goes to school too. The colleges are free.

The low cost of living is one of the reasons I chose GA. I worked for NY and couldn't wait to get out of there. My real estate taxes are about 1/4 of a comparable house I owned in NY. Real estate prices are a bit higher here, but not much. In the long run you save so much on taxes you will wonder why you ever stayed in NY.

If you like to ride, it's almost all year down here.
I'm not ready for the boneyard in FL and love the smoother roads most of which are twistier and riding is great!

Welcome! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

If HOOKY sells his house in LI and buys down here, he will probably get three to four times the house for 1/3 of the price that he sells his house in LI and his taxes will probably be cut to 1/4 or LESS than what he's currently paying...

I think Charleston is really becoming a destination city - - lots of new building going on there and they are really raising the bar... lots of big money there but the housing market is still affordable... I can see Charleston really blossoming in the next decade with regard to house values...

Thanks for the input there Johnny, but I'm not looking to sell furs if I come down south.
Thinking more in line of MC Leather & accessories etc., maybe a repair shop, along with used bike sales. And if the winds are prevailing then a little bar and grill next door.

Charleston is nice, too. When we moved down here in 2003, we were looking at both Charleston, and SAV (and a little town in West Texas... but, I digress...). At the time, Savannah was more affordable. Both had adequate schools (not as good as the NE, but there are other trade off. Either place your kids go, they will probably be "The big fishes in the little pond"), affordable taxes, good climate (Savannah is a little warmer). Our deciding factor was proximity to family (my inlaws are about 2 hours from here). and that Savannah is a smaller city. The housing market has boomed since we moved here. Our house has doubled, with minimal investment, since we moved here, not quite 4 years ago. I'm not sure what happened in Charleston since, how the market now compares. Marty used to live just outside of Charleston many years ago.... he also wanted a change. But, we did consider both. Areas in Charleston you might look at are Mt. Pleasant and N. Charleston, if you are considering that area (similar suburbs to what you are considering here in Savannah).

Visit both Charleston and Savannah cities, personally. They have two different feels. You'll know what you like better... (I personally, don't care much for Hilton Head...to each his or her own... That's what keeps the world going round!)
Either way you go, getting out of the crowds and congestion of LI will probably be a plus! It is so much better to live somehwere in a relaxed pace, for 52 weeks a year, rather than having to "get away" for 2 weeks a year to relax! I'd give yourself two days/one night in each location on your trip back home, explore each city. (It's a nice 2 hour drive, on the back rodas, from SAV to Charleston) You can get a general feel for which you want to research more, which is more to your family's fit. Me & mine will be happy to show you around here (I'm not sure about how much he knows/remembers about life in Charleston)
