Attention Northwest Ohioans,
I am interested in putting together a VTX tech session. Not sure how many of you would be interested, but I have a number of projects queued for my bike at the moment and would love to have some more experienced help/company. I figure it would be a great way to get together and meet fellow Xers, not to mention learn more about our X's.

I have the following projects in mind:
1) airbox de-smog
2) braided stainless throttle push/pull
3) braided stainless clutch cable
4) progressive front fork springs

I am willing to supply the beer and food if others are interested. Not sure I would have the best garage for it, so if someone has a more professional setup maybe they can step forward here. Also, if others have projects lined up for their X, please mention them - the more the merrier!

Email or PM me if you are interested in getting together for a tech session and I will try to coordinated something - the sooner the better!

Thanks,
Josh

SuperDan,
We should definitely get together one of the next couple weekends and do the cable upgrades. Let me know some date/times that would work for you. I know "VTX Candy Red" expressed interest in showing up as well.

OK,
So I can't stand the rainy weather, so I decided to get started on some of my projects as it looks like the weekend is going to be rainy. I did the progressive front fork springs yesterday and the Ground fix today. Pretty straight forward for both.

While I currently have the tank off, I want to do the de-smog and braided throttle/clutch cables this weekend. If anyone is up for it, give me a call at 419-215-9405 and let me know a good time. I live very close to St Vincent/Central Catholic near downtown. I can provide directions, beer and pizza if anyone is interested.

I think a few additional projects that can be added to the list are:

Bare's Barnett clutch spring replacement - http://www.drunkenmike.com/bareimg/VTX/ ... /index.htm (http://www.drunkenmike.com/bareimg/VTX/clutchspring/index.htm)

Horn relocation
240 kit :P

No problem Dan! I actually did a few more projects today - the desmog and the removal of the tank emblems. Started on the throttle cables, but didn't get farther than disconnecting the handlebar housing and cable from the throttle return. I'm not quite sure about the clutch cable yet, but I will try to finish the throttle cable tomorrow.

xetremex

Throttle cables are done! Not sure about how to do the clutch cable. I'm going to have to do some research. Last project on the current list -

I'm waiting for the GP Cycle pair block off plates and Barnett clutch springs (which I haven't received from HDL).

well thats good that you got going that well...
instead of working on the bike, I rode most of Sunday...did a whole bunch of practice in the morn, then cut the grass at home, then rode until the storm was approaching....

You have a 1300? We have an 1800... The reason I ask is because you talk about the clutch cable...
Also, what are you going to be doing with your extra tank emblems?

Dan,
I have an 1800 as well. By clutch cable, I really meant clutch line. As for the extra tank emblems, I am holding on to them as I like to keep all my stock items around just in case. Why do you ask - are you looking for a replacement pair or something?

well im just looking for extra emblems to have... want to do some things with them...

Glad to hear everything went ok...

by the way.. what was the easiest thing about doing your cables? where they difficult, and what was the trick to get them undone from the switch box housing?

what was the easiest thing about doing your cables? where they difficult, and what was the trick to get them undone from the switch box housing?

The easiest thing was unscrewing the switch box housing ;). I then loosed the cables from the throttle body to get some additional slack. The wires going into the throttle body and switch box housing have special locking metal balls (not sure how else to describe it). If you turn the cables at the throttle body enough, the metal ball will release from the throttle body and the cables will come loose. I then fished them out through the bike until they were completely released. With all that slack, it is easy to disassemble them from the switch housing simply by turning the cables until the balls release. I then re-installed the new cables to the throttle body first by turning them enough to get the locking nut locked into place. I then fished the cables through the frame and out near the headlight and screwed the nuts into the switch box handtight. Next pull on the inner wire inside the cable through the switch box to get some slack and then lock the wires and balls into the throttle switch box setup. Tighten everything up at the throttle body, tighten up the nuts on the switch box housing, then get all the freeplay out of the throttle by adjusting the pull line nut near the handlebar.

All in all, it should be a 1-2 hour job total. I'm not sure it can be done without removing the tank. Feel free to call me if you get stuck or have questions. PM me for my cell/home phone.

Well,
Got the bike ready to go tonight for some projects this weekend. Got a non-Xer friend coming over for a couple hours to help on the first two projects (to be done either tomorrow night or Saturday morning:
1) Barnett clutch springs
2) Braided clutch line
3) Horn relocation (maybe)
4) Universal flasher module in preperation for LEDs to come (maybe)

I'm currently putting together my supplies for a custom built 240 kit. If anyone is interested in helping/watching me put everything together, or if you just have general questions about what I've done thus far just ask.

I met a couple more Xers (not VTXOA members) on Wednesday at Jed's on Alexis. One was definitely interested in getting a Toledo group of Xers together for rides, tech sessions, etc. I'm hoping to get a group together sometime soon for any of the above!

I just met another local VTXer tonight at the local movie rental store. I told him all about the VTXOA and HDL site. He is definitely interested in doing the tech sessions. He told me he is doing the following projects soon:

Pipes
Powercommander
Hypercharger
Desmog

Maybe we could get a couple of people together to do them?

I'll definitely be attempting some of those projects within the next 6 months, tho I'm leaning more towards the HPP instead of the PCIII. Still, would be cool to see someone do the desmog in person so I know what I'm doing on my bike :)

Tom,

Well, after scavenging this site for all the info I could find, and talking with the dealer (who knew less than I already did) and the guy that makes the HPP on the phone, I just feel it's better suited to what I want to do to the bike.

Basically it came down to the fact that it's auto-adjusting. No need to find the perfect map for it, and can handle any altitude etc. I dig the fact it changes settings 'on the fly' and is independent of what kind of exhaust I use. I also will probably go with just a nice K&N filter instead of any super-duper hypercharger/aftermarket airbox. The guy at HPP recommended that.

It also gets slightly better gas mileage, and while you may be able to squeeze a few more horses out of the PCIII, to me that's like throwing a couple of more chairs onto the Queen Mary - not really necessary given this giant motor. :D

xetremex
06-30-2004, 12:11 AM
Tom,
Makes complete sense! I just wanted to make sure you were well informed. That is the exact reason to go with a HPP over a PCIII. Good luck with it! Remember, if you go with a HPP you don't want to do BIGLRY's desmog as the HPP relies on the clean air from the pair valves.

OK,
So I finally got the next project gearing up. I am going to do 4 big projects at once over the course of a week or so (before the VTXperience Bike Show). I will be doing the following 4 things over that week time:
1) polishing stock rims
2) installing polished calipers (and possibly polished rotors)
3) installing braided brake lines
4) installing Hoggone's no-hose rear brake reservior kit seen here -
http://www.4birckhead.com/vtx/hoggone_reservior.jpg

I am planning on starting all these projects around the 3rd week in July. I should have all the parts around the 12th, so I will begin shortly after that to meet the July 29th bike show deadline. If anyone is interested in helping or watching, let me know and I will keep you posted on a date that I will start.

xetremex
07-12-2004, 02:57 PM
Tom,
Got my braided brake cables in on Friday. Waiting for the chrome banjo bolts and polished rotors to come in tomorrow. The polished rotors should be here hopefully on Friday. I'm not gonna wait for the no-hose resevoir to come in as it might not arrive until the end of the month. Wheels will hopefully be polished when they are taken off to trade rotors.

I'm not sure exactly when I am going to start tearing the bike down yet - probably in the next couple days (I usually work at night when my baby & wife are asleep :) ), but might not start until the weekend depending on some nice weather. I will definitely let you know.

Projects on the horizon are:
---------------------------------
240 kit (ordered rim, swingarm and fender already)
LED front/rear lighting
Fat fork tube covers
Chromed triple trees, risers and speedo housing
Custom paint job (done by Black Swamp Choppers here in Whitehouse)

Thanks,

Will do. Feel free to ask me anything! I've done a lot of work on my X thus far and am learning new things daily. I think I will change the brake lines and calipers w/out pulling the wheels and rotors off for polishing. I just got them in today, but the chrome banjo bolts were delayed a day or two.

Dan,
I did do my clutch cable, but will be doing it again replacing the used cable I installed with my new Viking cable. You will have to bleed the clutch to install the cable. You can do it by hooking a hose to the bleed valve and simply squeezing the clutch until all the fluid is drained. Let me know if you want to get together this weekend or something and I can help you.

I'll be at the Homecoming on Friday for the VTX bike show - as my bike will be in the Wash N' Wax category of the show :D . If you are going down Friday, let's plan on riding together. I am trying to get a couple of my VTX buddies to go w/ as well.

Little update on my projects:

I have the bike completely broken down. Wheels are off and ready to be polished. Rotors have been removed and the polished ones will be reinstalled when wheel polishing is complete.

Calipers have all been switched out with the polished ones. Front braided brake lines have been installed but no fluid added to them yet. Stripped out the nut on the rear brake line so I haven't been able to change that one yet.

Going to install the chromed 240 swingarm as soon as I get a special lock nut wrench from another VTX member (I could use some help with this probably).

Final drive polishing is about 20% done. Front forks, speedo mount, and risers are completely removed and the trees will come off tonight (when I get a 28mm socket) to switch them all with chromed ones. During re-installation of the forks, I will also install Kewlmetal's fat fork kit and underside tree covers. This will completely finish the chromed out look of the front end. Not sure if I will install front fork LED turn signals or just run without front turn signals for a short time period.

Still waiting on my 18" rear rim and bobbed fender so that I can complete the 240 kit. That will happen in 3-4 weeks time most likely.

Sorry nobody has connected with me during these projects. During the weeks I usually start wrenching on my bike around 11pm and go till 2-3am, which I realize doesn't work for most. I will be putting in some serious weekend time this weekend b/c the VTX Bike show on the 29th is fastly approaching. Let me know if anyone cares to help on anything - polishing would be real helpful but is pretty tedious and uneventful!

Further update:

Front wheel and final drive are all polished. I decided not to waste the time on the rear rim b/c I will be replacing it in a month when all my 240 items come in :D .

Chromed risers, speedo mount, and triple trees have all been swapped out. Kewlmetal fat fork kit is installed. Hopefully going to get the rest of the front end together tonight. Stock swingarm is removed and ready to be replaced with the chromed 240 one. I was able to remove the stripped rear brake line nut, but ruined the cable in the process. I will be searching for a replacement from local stores tomorrow.

My no-hose rear brake reservoir and L&R forward control kit will be here on Thursday, so I will be working late Thursday night to get these two parts installed before the show.

Hope to see you all there!

Latest update:
The bike is back together completely! I was able to complete all my mods in those couple weeks :D .

Remaining small items - I still need to add brake fluid to both front/rear lines. My Hoggone no-hose rear reservoir is set to arrive tomorrow, so depending on the complexity of installation I might tackle it Thursday night (haven't decided on it yet though). While installing my rear shocks, I broke both lower bolts off  , so I gotta get those out tonight and reinstall a new bolt. Of course have to wash and wax the beast too.

You guys gotta see my fork mounted LED turn signals. They are 360 degree wrap around and are so slick looking - I frickin love them. They look awesome with the fat fork kit too.

:D :D :D :D :D

Hehe, sorry to keep you guys in suspense but I HAVE to clean it up before I post a pic. It has so many smudge marks and sweat drops from working those long hard hours on it. The chrome doesn't even look like chrome as it is super dull  . I will definitely get a pic up in the next day or so b/c I will have to clean it by Thursday for the Friday bike show :D .

As for the 240 progress, Cruise Concepts "said" that my rim and fender should arrive this week. I have the Metz tire ordered and it should also arrive this week. Thus, in the next few weeks I will be installing my 240 kit. I have to make a custom bracket for my rear LED array which may be somewhat challenging. My plan is to fit it to the inside of the fender, epoxy it to the inside, and also use the last two strut bolts as an additional bolt mechanism. I think I will make it out of some thin metal sheeting unless someone out there has a better idea?

Well,
I think I am going to take a week or so off before hitting the wrenches again! I still can't believe I was able to get all those projects done in a two week span.

Some of my future projects in the next couple months that I plan on grouping together are:
* 240 (still waiting for rim/fender)

* L&R Forward control relocation kit
* Hoggone's hoseless rear brake reservoir

* Drag bars (hiding electrical wiring inside bars)
* Chromed switch housing & reservoirs
* Chromed fork castings

* Custom paint job

I think that will pretty much be it! In a couple years will be engine performance mods:

Either a
Turbo system
or
High compression pistons/cams w/ Bored cylinders

Wet/Dry Nitrous system

L&R Forward control kit & Hoggone's rear brake reservoir are installed. Man is this setup slick! I like the forwardness of stretching my legs out, although I need to get some longer bolts to install my Aeromach hiway pegs again.

Should get my drag bars next week. Got my chromed switch housings sitting in front of me, so that will be the next project. Going to evaluate running the cables inside the bars.

Still waiting on my 240 stuff :x

240 STUFF IS IN! I got the tire mounted on the rim and got my bobbed rear fender. I plan on installing these items this weekend - hoping to get some local help from another VTXer I know. I have to do Bare's diode suggestion b/c I'll be replacing the rear lights w/ an LED strip.

Got my drag bars installed the other night - makes the X look mean! Still haven't installed my chrome switchbox housing. Coming soon will be chrome front reservoir assemblies to complete the entire chromed front end.

Also did the Tapper fuel line mod seen here to help in taking off the tank from now on. Man, this is a pretty slick setup w/ this quick disconnect coupler. Gonna save me lots of time and knuckle skin in the long run!

Also have the drag bars and chrome switch housings installed. Last item to finish the front end in chrome are the reservoirs which should come within the month from HANDLER.

Custom paint coming either September or October courtesy of Black Swamp Choppers in Waterville. Also, I have decided to black out the motor w/out taking it out (better get lots of tape). Think it will make for a great rainy weekend project.

Can't wait to show it off! I'll be at Headliners bike night tomorrow in Toledo if you are interested. I'll be parked inside probably between 9-10pm and stay a couple hours.

I have decided to black out the motor w/out taking it out (better get lots of tape). Think it will make for a great rainy weekend project.

Just walked in from the garage after finishing the blacked out motor look. I will update my pictures in a couple days - it looks very sharp IMO and couldn't have turned out any better!

I ordered the Speedchrome modified gear set and MTC performance clutch kit during Hal's 10% anniversary sale, but asked HDL not to process the order until I talk to Hal by phone. I want to see if I can get him to come down even further than the 10% discount for this high priced ticket order. I saved about $150 on the order, as well as an additional $120 in sales tax as I had it shipped to a local dealer in MI. Guess we'll see what happens with that!?

The blacked out engine keeps getting better and better each time I look at it :D . I am so happy I decided to do it while I was waiting for my shocks to come back from getting travel limiters installed (long story).
I am going to leave the fins unpolished for now. I thought about either doing chrome nailpolish or taking a dremel tool, but I think it looks absolutely awesome w/out them polished - maybe a project for another day.

I will definitely be at the Honda East bike show - can't wait to see you there!

Got the MTC clutch installed this past weekend. Man, what a nice clutch! Was hoping to get the modified gear set installed, but need to find either a impact gun or buy the Honda special tools

Some future things coming up for the X:

- speedchrome modified gear set
- corbin chin spoiler
- chromed reservoirs (still waiting on them from HANDLER)
- Kewlmetal fork footies (I am designing a new site for them so its a freebie) :D
- RC Components Wicked front rim w/ matching rotors & new Avon
- custom paint job from Black Swamp Choppers (finally found something I like - pics below)

New developments - engine performance plan
===============
I began talks w/ David over at Designed Performance who engineered the 134 big bore kit. This would take the X up to about 2200cc. There is also a new Dual throttle body kit coming out which will add 10hp alone. I am in talks w/ David about designing a new site and getting a "guinea pig discount" towards his 134 big bore kit and having him install the throttle body at the same time. I will keep everyone posted on the progress - definitely a winter project and would involve taking the bike down to him in Missouri.

Oh, and I hopefully got a local metal fabricator to design me a custom air intake modeled off the Proton4. My idea is to fabricate a replacement cover to the stock airbox that has the Proton4 velocity stacks and air tubes, so it just bolts right up to the stock intake. I'll keep you guys posted on the progress.

Hello,
I happen to live in Maumee. I usually don't go under the Ohio page, but was just looking around and found your posts. You have done a ton of stuff and it all looks fantastic. I am interested in doing a couple of the same mods at some point, so it is nice to know there is someone local that has done them and can give advise and pointers. Anyways, just thought I would say hi.

Josh you going to get dyno runs of your proton 4 clone setup? See if it does anything. Let me know the results.

Josh that bike sucks. Total crap. of course I'm just incredibly jealous :) Just keeps getting better! Good luck with the 134 kit... hope it works out for ya. I don't know what's cooler...the front LED turn signals or the rear LEDs flush with the fender.

I keep looking at my stock signals when i'm riding and they look like they stick out so far I'm going to clip someone. Like 2 giant xmas ornaments or something.... definitely something to change one day.

Were the LR Xtreme controls hard to install? I really dig those.

Well, I finally dropped the tins off at Black Swamp Choppers for painting and body work. I asked them to grind off the front fender rivets, fill in the tank seam and fill in the dash panel cutting a new gas cap.

I also finished the new kewlmetal.com site and will be getting my chrome rewards shortly :D . I am also having them make me some one-off pieces for the idiot light panel, a stock speedo mount to hold my Veypor and some words cut into my spark plug covers.

I wired up all my extra LED strips to my spark plug areas and have a nice breaker switch to turn them on and off. Pics are below w/ no spark plug covers.

I took advantage of the Holiday sale and bought the rear brake bracket that mounts the rear caliper on the bottom of the rotor. That should provide a cleaner look at the rear rim.

PS - The project to make a P4 replica for the stock airbox cover is dead. Especially b/c Pete is beginning to make the P4 again.

How much is the bodywork going to cost? I'd like to do a similiar project down the road but not sure how much that stuff costs.
Thanks

Hey Nate,
Actually, I am not sure how much that bodywork will cost. I designed Black Swamp Choppers a new website http://www.blackswampchoppers.com in exchange for a paint job and the body work. I can try to get a figure out of Todd the owner when I talk to him next and pass that along to you.

I cruise by you're place every now and then. I can never tell if you're home or not. I'm not one for just "dropping in," if you know what I mean. I know what you're address is you've told me before. I for one can't wait to see you're scoot. We HAVE to hook up this summer and cruise around the "burg." I'd like to be seen cruising around with that monster beside me. Later!!!!!!!!!! 8)AND the sad thing is I can't view any thing from the BBR site. Our surf watch at work has it blocked as a chat site even though I can access this site. It sucks because all of my pictures are there and I don't have a home computer. 8)

Yeah, we usually park our cars in the garage so it is hard to tell. We will definitely hook up this summer for some riding. I will let you know when I get my tins back and put on so you can come see the almost finished final product.
