An ice pick is the best oil filter wrench I know of for taking off a filter....I hand tighten them on using a paper towel or rag.

I use a regular oil wrench on the X, small size of course. Have never had that issue.
On a car one time it was on so tight that I ended up with all the filter off except the base, then with a hammer and screwdriver or chisel got the base off.

Drive a screwdriver through it....poke a hole to drain it first, then away you go...when the big strap wrench has gone missing.
