My son is in the Navy and was transfered to Honolulu about 4 months ago. He and his wife just had their second child last week.
I am coming to visit the first of Sept and want to take my almost 3 year old grandson fishing. I do not want the deep-sea boat tour deal just some laid back good quality time with my son and grandson. It would also be fun to go crabbing.

I have searched the web and all I can find is deep sea fishing.

Any advice on local fishing and crabbing or other fun stuff for us would be greatly appreciated

If you have tackle (or rent) there's plenty of highway over near Laie off of which is some beach fishing. Park on one side, walk about 30 feet to the ocean.

Your son on a boat or on shore duty? I'm stationed at the shipyard.

I am very proud of my son and he has settled into shore duty for a year or so. He is currently an aid to Air Force Lt General Leaf. General Leaf is the Deputy Commander of the Pacific Fleet. He transfered from Seattle where he was a tactical attack officer on the Abe Lincoln. last Summer I spent a week on the Abe as it cruised from Hawaii to San Diego, way coooooooooooool. He is also a Navel Aviator, SH 60. Yes I am bragging as a proud parent of my son that chose a very tough life in the military.

With all that said I would also like to give a very BIG thanks to you for your service and of course to all those oveseas.

Thanks for your reply

I am located on Hickam and there are some good places to fish on base and are great for taking the kids. There is also some awesome coral around that you can take nets down and catch plenty crabs and fish. I fish the island often and would be happy to help you out some more, just let me know.

No Problem but as far as bay fishing, you wont find any on the island. The islands of hawaii are very steep coming out of the water and therefore "all" fishing is deep sea fishing. It's not like the mainland where deep sea fishing consists of an 6 to 8 hour boat ride, sometimes 1-way. Here deep sea fishing means a 30 minute boat ride to the nearest bouy.

With all that put aside the best place for nets would be at the BX or NEX and the best time to catch exotic fish in the corrals is at night with a flashlight. You can crab all day but still the best are at night. There are docks you can fish off of or my favorite on base is the surf fishing during low tide. Send me a PM and i can give you my number.
