Has anyone had any experience with a Tom Tom GPS unit? (I tried a search with no matches.)

A friend of mine bought one for his father. Does that count? 8) He borrowed it once. Didn't say anything negative about it.

If you like one map data over the other (NavTeq vs TeleAtlas), you can rule out certain manufacturers. That may make your decision easier.

I spet all day yesterday debating between tom tom and garmin. I went with garmin simply because it seems to be the most mentioned one here as well. I was looking at the Go 7something (i forget the number) and the Go 510 (again maybe wrong #) but went with the garmin Nuvi 360 cause of price for one (found for 217 open box at amazon.com) and cause I was riding with someone who has it and he loved it as well.

I have one, TOM TOM ONE 2nd edition.

Nice GPS, the menu's are ok. I prefer the Garmins but find the Tom Tom's ok for my needs.
I have read they dumped some features on the 3nd edition. The software is nice, you can view / operate the device from you computer when connected. Nice to plan routes.

Third party software allows for import / exporting routes from Google Earth.

If you looking I just saw them on Tigerdirect for $109, they have the Garmin 200W ( wider 4.3 screen ) for $199.

Do you have an specific question.

Thanks for the input guys.

CRUZ N: I saw the Tom Toms on Tiger, too; Refurbs for $109, and it seems I've seen new ones for $125 somewhere.

I have an 1800C and am curious about the set-up. Is ther something that connects to the bike to orient the unit as for as the direction the bike is headed?

Can it be wired into the 12V system or is it battery only?

What mounting adapter are you using?

I have a ram mount from http://www.cyclegadgets.com
I installed a cigarette lighter just under the top triple tree and run the wire under the tank and seat. There I wired it into a harness that had an open blade. It's controled by the key switch that way it doesn't run my battery down.

I have the Rider II and like it alot.

I have an 1800C and am curious about the set-up. Is there something that connects to the bike to orient the unit as for as the direction the bike is headed?
The GPS gets direction from the movement of the bike. No GPS ( I believe ) will indicate an accurate direction while sitting still.

Can it be wired into the 12V system or is it battery only?
The Rider can be operated by it's supplied internal battery or it can be wired into a 12v circuit on the bike. It comes with a power cable with open ends that can be connected to the bike for power. I wired my cable through a connector so I can easily remove the GPS and mount completely from my bike.

What mounting adapter are you using?
I use a RAM mount for both my GPS and XM radio.

I went with the Rider because I already had XM on the bike. It does link to a cell phone if you wish to take calls while riding. It comes with a Cardo Scala headset that I have never used but would need to for taking cell phone calls through it.

From what I've seen the maps are comparable to the Zumo. The Zumo does have a couple of nice things like separate trip odometers and such. Wish the Rider had that. One odometer on my bike is not quite enough for me.

Hope this helps,
Jerry

I bought two TomTom One's and neither would do anything, but white screen when turned ON. I could use a paper clip and press the reset button to get them to work, but who wants to ride around with a paper clip to reset it every time you turn it on!

I bought a Digiwalker MIO! I like it so far. I guess because it works!

I bought a TomTom 130 foe 150$ online from Walmart and picted it up at the store. I love it. I made my own mount in my shop, nice low profile and polished. I will post pictures later and also post the print if anyone is interested in making there own.

Dalls Retro,
I've got the original Rider. I like it. When I bought mine there was about a $100 difference between the Rider and Zumo. I didn't want/need the MP3 playback and did NOT want to be attached to the GPS unit via a cable (Rider has BlueTooth receiver).
I threw away the mount that TomTom sent with the Rider; it was JUNK. The current Rider ships with a RAM-Mount setup. I bought a TechMounts clamp, short arm and base plate to mount mine on the scooter. Had to wobble out the holes on the plate a bit because TomTom didn't follow the AMPS standard for mounting holes placement.
I swap mine into the car also; using a BlueTooth speaker I got on eBay for $20 so I don't have to have the earbud in place in the car.
If I was going to get another it would probably be a Zumo...

Jerry,
After updating the application software on the device I found that there is a "Trip Statisitcs" capability in the new software that it did not have before. It is not as full-featured as the Zumo but is adequate. Also contains some other new Bells-and-Whistles like a one-touch "Add current position to itinerary" feature. Not as accurate as true breadcrumb route recording but meets the requirement for recording where you went on a ride. The software update is a free download from TomTom HOME.

I bought the first generation TomTom and out of the box had problems with memory and required inputing date/time upon startup. After a few weeks of testing and communications via email etc. TomTom sent me a replacement. That second one had an issue with the headset. The mic and the next set of replacements did not work and the unit would no longer recharge when on the bike.
Finally, after a year of working through the problem with TomTom, they sent me a 2nd generation Rider which functioned FLAWLESSLY. It did everything TomTom said it would do. NOW, my issue is that there was a content download to the Rider that disabled my hands free calling... which renders the mic portion of my Scala headset useless... a key feature I enjoyed having. Now, I'm back to contacting TomTom about what it is they have done.

...to be continued.

Issue with the TomTom Rider 2 is solved. Apparently after the new content was downloaded from TomTom Home I was supposed to RESET the unit, wipe out any existing bluetooth connections and redo the connections. Did not know this. Anyway, the Rider 2 is working as designed again- along with the new features. A bread crumb feature would be nice, in order to review later- but not necessary in this humble man's opinion.

Thanks for the news on the software upgrade. Haven't installed it yet but I saw the new screens and they will be helpful.

I had one problem with my Rider 2 at first. The touch screen wouldn't work. I could turn the unit on and off just fine but I couldn't select anything from the screen. Just once in a while I had this problem. TomTom replaced my unit and I've never had a problem since.
