View Full Version : Do people wave in OH?

I'm from central PA, very rural area - I remember people waving back when I waved and vice versa. It was a nice reminder that I'm not alone out on the highways full of clueless autos. anyway since starting to ride again in the Cleveland area I noticed not many people respond to a wave - I'd say it's about 50%. Is it a helmet thing? (I always wear a shorty at least). A harley thing? Doubtful because even sportbikes don't wave back. Just wondering if that's a thing here in CleveLand or OH in general.
Not really a big deal I'm just kind of curious. Ride safe!

Always thought it was the mood the other rider was in. Its a 50/50 chance in se ohio. Have had a few goldwings wave, most do not.
The ones that dont, I chalk up to new riders in my mind anyway. I wave to everyone.

Hey Tom,
I wave to every biker I see. But if I am shifting gears, I will nod my head, or even wink at them  . I am from Louisville Kentucky, and here most people wave when you wave to them.

TomVH,
I wave to everyone!
Sport Bikes, Cruisers, Mopeds anything on two or three wheels.
Most wave back, some dont. It use to bother me when someone didnt wave back, but not anymore. I just keep on waving.

Same goes here unless I'm starting from a light or situation where I can't. If I miss one I get the next one twice.

I wave to everyone unless my left hand is busy.
This thread got me thinking about ppl who wave back, usually anyone on a non-Harley cruiser will wave, most ppl on Touring bikes, few ppl on Harleys, and no one on crotch rockets(cocky lil bastards 8) ).
Anyway thats my 2 cents worth.

Most folks wave but some don't.
When I was on my 750 Nighthawk the Harley guys wouldn't wave. The VTX fools them :-)

come on down to the Dayton area, you might not be able to touch your left handle grip for hours. I have yet to be blown off unless it's an unsafe situation...ride safe.

Just the other day, I waved to some guy on a Sportster. No reply. For a second, I thought to myself that I might as well have flicked him the double birds, figuring I'd get the same response. Weeks went by when I just didn't wave, but then I recognized that good will should prevail. "F" the cocky bastards that can't wave back. I sometimes get an index finger pointing down from rice rockets. Sometimes, I'll even get a wave from a Hog, but I know that after they realize what they just waived to, deep inside they're wishing they could take it back.
It's amazing there's actually prejudice in the biking community..between those sleds leak oil and those that don't.

I always try to wave if I'm not in the middle of something. I can usually peg the type that won't wave. It amazes me.
I just got my VTX, but I've been riding a decked out Suzuki Volusia for the last year and I would say about 90 percent wave back here in Columbus. I wave to everyone, I even waved to a guy on a scooter once. :o

I thought waving was part of riding a bike? It is awesome to pass a group of bikes, all of them waving. I passed a bunch of bikes and I don't think I put my hand on the grip for 1/2mi. All of harleys. Now that is how it is supposed to be. But, it is just as cool to pass solo riders on the twisties. I wave to them all, even the knuckleheaded crouchriders. Most of them seem to do the same. Tom maybe if you move further south on I-77 (south of Cleveland) the hand waving will increase. Come down to Canton and we'll ride someday.

(First Post! :pepper1: ) I'm proud to say here in Western Washington I wave to everyone, and probably 99% wave back, Harleys, Dual-Sport & even Sport Bikes, my last street bike was a Yamaha FJ1100, I love all bikes, they are all very fun to ride and are all unique in there own way.

I wave as long as I don't jeopardize my safety, most wave back, some don't bother. Haven't been told I'm 'number one' yet. I don't let it bother me if they don't wave back.
BTW, anyone going to the Homecoming? I am intereted in meeting some of the people on this board. I only live 10miles from the Motorcycle Plant and plan on spending Friday and Saturday looking around.

I wave at everyone and so far everyone has waved at me back. Even a big group of HD's. Riding is all about being free and embracing a community of people that like to do that. The biker wave, as some call it, I see as a salute to those who choose to enjoy life. Ride on. If you are in the Fulton County area, let me know. I'm even more west than Toledo.

Tom, I can attest from many miles traveled in the Buckeye State that they wave just as much if not more than us back home here in PA. I know from first hand knowledge that if you're driving in your pickup truck and you don't wave back at the other folks in their pickup trucks waving at you it's damn near an insult. At the least they know your a foreigner.

I've noticed I get more waves with my helmet off (full face, smoked shield) than with it on... and I seem to want to wave more with it off. I guess it just feels less personal when waving to a helmet.

I wave at nearly everyone. Here in Northeast Ohio I think you get about 85% of the HD group waving back, probably because they think you're riding a HD. However I get about 10% return wave on the sport bike boys, now I most of the time don't even wave at them to get a rejection.
