Well, it's finally happening.
I bought my scoot 5 years ago at the end of this month.
Late July, 2003. It was the first of the 2004 models to come in, and was still in the crate when I first saw it. (but the dealer was really hot to get it on the floor, it was the first Silver one in Florida).
The next day when I called in to confirm that I'd take it, it was already on the floor, and someone was trying to work a deal on it. I bought it out from under him (I already had first dibs..).

Soooo when I bought it, I picked up the extended warranty. Figured.. 5 years of not having to worry about a major breakdown.

In the past 5 years, I have used that warranty exactly "0" times.
I had one opportunity to use it when my starter switch went out, but I opted to replace it myself from parts found on this site, rather than let it sit at the dealer for 2+ weeks.

Other than that, this bike has been absolutely rock solid, never a problem one. The only minor problems I've ever had with it have almost without exception, self inflicted (except for the starter switch).
So, some would say that I wasted the money.
But I don't think so. For me, the peace of mind for the past 5 years was worth it.

But, she goes off warranty at the end of the month.
5 years old already. Think I'll give her an extra coat of wax this week-end.

If you haven't already, you may want to have the water pump and rear bearing checked before the warranty runs out. I seem to recall Jon mentioning that he's seem some nasty things. Perhaps he can elaborate.

I'm setting up with a spare flange for the bearing the issue as I'm seeing more failures. But, I've yet to see a water pump fail on a 1300 :?

I've been keeping an eye on the water pump for a while now, and so far, there has been no sign of leakage, or failure. That seems to be a weakness in the 1800s.

As to the flange bearings.. I have a set of bearings on the shelf,,, just in case.
But I've never gone in and looked if the existing ones are bad. I've only had the rear wheel off a couple of times, and forgot both times. Maybe I need to do that this month. It's just one of those jobs... I don't mind taking it off, but I always ALWAYS have a fight to get it back in there.

I SHOULD really drop it off at Jons for a good going over. I do my own maint. but sometimes it's nice to have someone else look at it. A new set of eyes may spot something I've missed. Especially now that shes "getting up there" in years. lol

Just an observation: For the first couple of years that I had this bike, I seriously regretted it, and wished I'd gotten a Heritage Classic, or an RK Classic. But after owning the bike longer, and seeing how reliable it has been, AND THE LIQUID COOLING, I'm much more settled with the VTX.

Now that I've said that, and the warranty is expiring, I'm sure it will self destruct on August 1

Great luck. But another side of the story [for inquiring readers who want both sides] is that I have used my extended warranty 4 times. Nothing that would have broken the bank without the warranty, but it have cut down the food and shoes for the kids-- and the beer for me.

We can't have Jim running low on beer

BTW, I've used my warranty also. I had the flange bearings replaced in my bike about 10k miles ago.

Bev had a new water pump, fan switch and radiator cap just replaced a few weeks ago under warranty. That stuff alone with labor would have been more than an extended warranty thru a dealer
