View Full Version : Cafe Destinations
Hello,
I live in the Rochester area and we try to find 'out of the way' cafes that have great food and we then find the best scenic roads to take to get there and back. Does anyone know of great 'out of the way' cafes on the south east side of the state? Say from Hastings to the Iowa border? Along the west edge of WI would also be good.
Last weekend we went to a cafe called Little Miami. It is in Freeburg. We took 16 east to 76 south to 249 east. Great roads and great food...
thanks...
There is this great burger joint called Kings in Measville south of Hastings.
ItÂ’s in the country and it is a beautiful ride up from the Rochester/Red Wing area.
Don't forget about the gentle mans club  in Hager City WI. From Cottage Grove it is a nice ride. Cross over from MN to Prescott WI and take 35 S. to Hager City right and go over the bridge and it's on the left hand side. 35 is a AWESOME road. Hills, curves and lots of sandstone valleys to ride through. The echo's of 2 or more bikes is so cool.

I have been to Kings. Great burgers! I will try the Gentle mans club. Thanks...
Another place that has great burgers is Slipperies in Wabasha. It is located next to the river. I can't remember which road but it is a small town so it is not hard to find.

Cross over to WI at Red Wing or Wabasha and go to Pepin. Go down by the water and look for a couple different places. One is the Pickle Factory. I think it's still called that. Just ask one of the locals. The other is the Harbor View Cafe. The pickle factory is nice little place that is a bar/cafe. The Harbor View is a little ritzier. They don't take reservations or credit cards last I knew. Not your typical small town cafe food either. Lamb chops, sea food other than the Friday fish fry and stuff like that. It's a very popular place. Most of the customers are from the Cities. Expect a wait of a coule of hours if you go on a nice day. Get the stuffed mushrooms appetizer, very popular. My info is a couple years old, haven't been there for a while. I grew up there and now the parents live north of that. Let me know if you want a little more info and I'll see if I can dig it up. I might even be able to remember some of the good roads for rides.

the Pickle Factory. Both overlook Lake Pepin - beautiful views. The Pickle is under new management and I think the food has improved. The Harbor View is perhaps one of the best restaurants in the midwest. They take checks and don't take reservations. If they are busy - which is often - just put your name on the list and ask when they expect you'll be seated. You don't have to wear anything special - the food is the special part. Then take a tour on your bike - there are lot's of great roads even off the water. If you're from Rochester I'd be surprised if you haven't heard of this place before. I hearby offer the following - if anyone on this list wants to come down to pepin I will 1) eat with you there 2) take you on that tour.

20 miles north of Pepin is a little town named Arkansaw (yes). It's up a very nice ride on county road N from pepin. Foods great and Friday and Saturday evenings has live music - the place is closed on Sunday. And the gentle man's club must be new owners of what was once called the lavendar rose - great food too. I haven't been to the new place - if you go let me know how it was. Also further North of Arkansaw is another great restaurant called The Creamery, I forget the towns name but it is south of Menomonie - we have so many great restaurants in this area it is hard to believe.
