Hey you guys,
My girl and I plan on comin to see the state's sites about August 25. I think we can make it to Sioux Falls from Milwaukee in one day no problem. Then, we are looking for the obligatory places and roads to catch over the next three or four days. What to see. ESPECIALLY, where to stay each night. I had better start planning now so its not too hectic but we still get around and make it back by the weekend. Its gotta be decent at least, no crap holes. Perhaps we hook up with some of you when we are out and about? I met SIXWILLWIN in LaCrosse so far.

So, I'll pretend the big Sturgis Rally is happening without the crowds that come with it. I wouldn't mind adding Montana, N. Dakota, or Colorade to roads traveled either. (Got a map to fill in as you can see).

Any good suggestions? Large, wild parties in my honor would be great! 8)

I acquired a Sturgis map with a list of scenic routes to take when we are there. Looks like we'll stay in Sturgis and ride out from there each day. Anybody free then you are welcome to join us!

HMM - Hey whats up? As you can see this board is soooooo quiet. I have maps of scentic routes out in the Hills, although its hard NOT to find one. I could go over some routes with you and help sort out some good ones. If you are going to fit in all the "tourists" routes, you may not have time! Although if you havent seen Needles Highway and Iron Mountain, you probably should, although it takes awhile, but some of the finest scenery in the Hills. Lots and lots of options, I am going there this Thursday, staying just outside of Lead and Deadwood (cool town). I will investigate some new roads while out there, going to do the Devils Tower run and into Wyoming a bunch. later sixwillwin

Hey Heavymetalman, you are gonna have a blast in the Hills. I rode for 4 days out there earlier this summer, and hit lots of great roads. One day I would take 170 South out of Sturgis through Vanocker Canyon down to the Johnson Siding road (173) south that hooks up with 44. Take that West to 385 then south to 16 into Keystone. From Keystone go West on 323 (Old Hill City Road) which is awesome, to Hill City. From there you can go South to Needles Highway (87) and then take 16a, which is Iron Mountain Road, back North to go past Mt. Rushmore on 244. From there you can make your way back to Sturgis however you want. That is gonna be, in my opinion, the best riding in the Hills and a must ride. After that, you have lots of options. The Devils Tower loop is really cool and would get you into another state. I would take 14a (through Boulder Canyon) Southwest to Deadwood and keep going through to Lead and to Cheyenne Crossing, which is the Southern end of Spearfish Canyon (again, awesome) and North on 14a to Spearfish, then 85 to Belle Fourche where you will hook up with 34 and 24 to do the Devils Tower loop coming back to Sundance and Four Corners before heading back on 85 and back to Sturgis. You could go from Sturgis on the Interstate and then 34 to Belle Fourche to start your trip, but you would miss either Boulder Canyon or Spearfish Canyon then and both are excellent. These two routes are my favorite in the Hills and after that you could do Nemo Road between 385 and 170, and you could also hit the Badlands if you are taking the Interstate out to Sturgis. Drop down at exit 131 and take the Badlands State Scenic Byway (240) back to the Interstate at Wall and then continue to Strugis. The Badlands is cool but in my opinion I wouldn't make a special trip from the Hills out there but would be worth it on your way through. Have a good time and I hope this helps!

Very nice write up there! Thumbs up on all you wrote. I would say to do the Badlands loop off the Interstate on the way out there. Going home everything gets rushed and all it seems. I would allow an extra 2 hours or so for the Badlands loop, depending on how many times you stop and stuff.

Glad to help. Sixwillwin is right about Deadwood. You gotta hit that one night to experience the nightlife and some gambling if that is your thing. Keystone is also kinda kitchy and neat along with Hill City. I also forgot the mention that you should swing by Crazy Horse on 385 South of Hill City. It is not far out of the way and at least neat to see once, even if it is just from the road.
