I hate the mount RAM makes for the handlebars and sells for $30

RAM mount brand

This one sells for $30 on Ebay and is nicer than the RAM mount brand

Here is the one I made and I think it look alot better than the other two and cost $10 less

I made it by buying the $9.50 ball for the RAM mounts that is 1/4"-20 thread (item # RAM-SOCK25 at cyclegadgets.com) I bought 2 bolts at 1 1/4" long at Lowe's for $0.11 each. Then 2 mounts from Kuryakyn for $9.99 each ( http://www.kuryakyn.com/index.cfm/go/Home.ProductDetail/catID/22/scID/135/IMID/375 (http://www.kuryakyn.com/index.cfm/go/Home.ProductDetail/catID/22/scID/135/IMID/375) )

the hole on the mount for the ball is slightly larger than the 1/4" bolt I got but when tightened it is straight and does not move in the mount. The $9.99 Kury mounts are for 1" bars. Mounts for larger bars are slightly more.

I spent a grand total of $39.20 plus shipping and got a better looking mount for the handlebars. Saved $20. Now I will not me ashamed and want to take them off when I am not using the iPod and my GPS. I will post pics when I actually get them on the bike. That will probably be Sunday as it is cold here, lol.

Edit 8/29/2009: found another supplier for the chrome Kury mount as I think the link above is dead.

Pics of the mounts on my bike with and without the iPod and Garmin mounted. These were taken at night but they are decent and give you a general idea on how it looks.

Falcon,

Do you have a measurement for the width of the Kury mount(bottom pic)?

I want to put this between the brake lever mount and the throttle mount(about 1" space) and was wondering if it would fit.

Thanks
Bama

I do not have the exact measurment and if I remember tommorrow in all my erands I will try to get it. The problem is the mount hole the protrudes off the mou nt for the handlebars kicks off at a slight angle. As far as fitting between the throttle and brake mounts you can always slide the brake over a hair or two. Just loosen the two screws a little and slide it over. If it is bigger than the gap it is not by much.

Thanks for the help. I can't move my brake lever any more because it is aganst the part of the punishers where they turn into 1.5 inch bars. I want to mount it next to the brake lever because I don't want to mount it on the middle of the bars. The measurement will be a big help.

Thanks for your time
Bama

someone PM'd me asking about the mount I used. Here is what I replied to them

Yes it is the new 4th gen nano and I am using the RAM mount system. RAM does not make a mount for the 4th gen yet so I got a 1st/2nd gen mount and had to shave just a tad bit off the top clip piece. I then put a 1x1 piece of velcro (which I would have done either way) on the back of the nano to further secure it. I have had zero trouble from it and am not nervous at all about losing it.

I bought the cradle, arm (1 3/4 inch), and base (RAM-sock25) from Cyclegadgets.com http://www.cyclegadgets.com/Products/RAM/ram.asp?prod=RAM-NANO (http://www.cyclegadgets.com/Products/RAM/ram.asp?prod=RAM-NANO)
I bought the Kuryakyn accessory mount for $10 from Kury to mount the ball (RAM-SOCK25) to the handlebars. http://www.kuryakyn.com/index.cfm/go/Home.ProductDetail/catID/7/scID/83/IMID/375 (http://www.kuryakyn.com/index.cfm/go/Home.ProductDetail/catID/7/scID/83/IMID/375)

Makes for a cleaner look on the handlebars.

Hoipe this helps.

bumping to the top as I see alot of posts about the GPS and mounts. I made this and did my little write up awhile back. I also found another supplier of the Kury mount. http://www.hsgear.biz/ProductInfo~productid~KU-1420.html

hope this helps

Looking at the clamps on Kuryakan's site, they look like the bolt hole is offset a bit. Is this correct or are they actually flat. (does this make sence?)

Thanks for the links, ordered my mount & posts for my Nuvi. Will be adding a cigarette outlet and charger shortly for those longer drives (my nuvi is also my mp3 player, so no need for a second mount).

I don't get it. You guys are spending $40-$50 to put together something that is already selling on eBay for $30(which incidentally I have).
