mradice,
Here’s my $.02 worth.
I would guess you are not happy with the sound of the stock exhaust and are contemplating upgrading to after market pipes.
What’s the worst that could happen?? You drill the pipes and you don’t like the sound. You try drilling more holes but ultimately decide on replacing the stock exhaust with aftermarket pipes.
What’s the best that could happen? You drill the holes and love the sound. You decide not to purchase aftermarket pipes and you save $300 to $400 dollars and have more money to spend on chrome or something (like a new seat).
Either way it’s a win win situation. Don’t be intimidated with making mods to your “X”. Remember, someone has to be the first to try something!!
I know a guy (2high2ride) that purchased a 1100 Sabre earlier this year (he just upgraded to an 1800 “C”). The first week he had the bike, he decides he doesn’t like the way the front foot pegs were towed in. So he gets out my Saws All and CUTS A ¼” OFF BOTH FOOTPEG BRACKETS!!. The results were exactly what he was looking for.
The moral to my long-winded story is GO FOR IT!!

mradice,
What is your bike? I drilled my pipes using the Clayton method about 2 months ago. I love it. Drilled 6 symmetrical 15/32" holes in the rear baffle only. I was going the get aftermarkets, but after doing this I'm hooked. You have nothing to loose by drilling by this method, if you don't like the sound you can always go back to stock pipes by tapping the holes and using 1/2" bolt to plug the holes. If you want to listen to my bike I would love to ride with you, I live near canton. By the By my bike is an 03 1300 retro, yours will sound different if it is an 1800, but don't know how much.
Good luck

mradice,
I have done this mod to my 03 1800 Retro, if you are going to be at the Homecoming on Saturday maybe we could meet up and you can hear exactly what it sounds like. I will check the board again in the morning before we head out.

http://bigbikeriders.com/photopost/data/500/178MVC-016F-med.JPG It cost about a dollar two ninety-eight. I already had the bits a dremmel and a sawsall. It just took a little time so I didn’t SCREW IT UP. Murphy’s law runs rampant at my house at times!!!!![/img]
