View Full Version : Ride to Delaware Beach?

PalmettoX

Pat and I would like to ride down to the Delaware Seashore State Park, just south of Rehoboth Beach one Monday while it's still summer. There are bath houses and concession stands, and it's only a 2 hour ride during the week (no weekend shore traffic) from Southern Chester Co. We were thinking Mondays to avoid the weekend beach traffic. Anyone interested in considering the following Monday dates to join us? Aug23, Aug30, Sept13?

Steve,

August 30th and September 13th are both good for me! On August 23rd I should be returning from a trip to Wellsboro, PA, so that date is no good for me.

That trip to the Delaware shore is usually pretty nice, when there's no traffic. I was just in Lewes, DE last week. Unfortunately, I was there in dress uniform for that fallen DE State Trooper's funeral.

Hey guys,
I visit Fenwick often but never have rolled down on my bike before. I might be interested in tagging along if I can get the ok from the wife. There is a great new restaurant that opened up there in January called the Cabana Grille. If you like good food that is the place to go.

Well, I now have a Dr. appointment on August 23 at 1:00 PM, so that day is out. I'd like to shoot for Monday, August 30. I'd like to leave here as early as possible, and ride down DE Route 1. We can make a stop along the way for gas/drinks, etc. We can meet somewhere along DE Route 1, I will be coming down Route 896 from Newark, DE, and hitting Route 1 near Odessa, DE (about 6 miles south of the Route 1 bridge that goes over the C&D Canal). We can pick a more exact spot once we find out who else wants to go. It ought to be a easy but great ride. The time is flexible, but the earlier the better in my book (meeting at Route 1/Route 896 at 9:00 AM is good for me, but I'm open for other suggestions). How about it, any other thoughts?

Steve,

I couldn't wait for you any longer. I mounted the Kury longhorns with quick clamps and ISO pegs on my engine guards. Probably could have gone with the regular mounts. They are BIG (REAL BIG) but real comfy. At my age, comfy is the goal.

I'm ready for the DE ride.

Capt...I'll look like Dennis cruising down the road on his Goldwing but I'll have a bunch of black stuff around me.

Steve

I'd like to meet somewhere near the intersection of De Route 1 and Route 896, at "Boyd's Corner", which is 1/2 way between where Rt 1 crosses the C&D Canal and Odessa, DE. I think there's a WAWA on the corner, but I'm not sure. Guess that sounds like I'll have to ride down there and pick a spot to meet up!! Should be a good ride for an afternoon, since Boyd's Corner is only about 30 miles from the house. Wanna do it some afternoon this week after I get home from work, Ragman?

Pat just reminded me that SHE has a Dr. appointment on the 30th, so I may be traveling solo. It's either that, or I reschedule my Dr. appointment from the 23rd to the 30th (which sounds like the thing to do). Does anyone who wants to go on the 30th have a problem if we go on the 23rd instead?? The 23rd is still 3 weeks away, so we still have plenty of time for planning.

Steve,

I guess I could do the 23rd, but the 30th is better for me. We will be coming back from a trip to Wellsboro on the 22nd. I might need a break from the bike, after that trip! We may decide to stay an extra day, and come back the 23rd. In that case, I couldn't make it, anyway.

Hi John.
I looked at the WAWA web site, and there IS a WAWA at the corner of De Rt 1 and 896, so we really don't have to check it out in person. Tomorrow (Wednesday) after work I need to go to Havre de Grace to do a vessel safety check on a sailboat. If it's not raining, I'm going by bike.
Looks like it's a toss-up between the 23rd and the 30th. Let's see if we get any more votes this week, then I'll make an "executive decision".....

Looks like August 30th wins.
I'd like us to meet up at the WAWA that is located at the intersection of Route 896 and US Route 13 on August 30 at 9:00 AM.

If you're coming from the North, come down Delaware Route 1 to the Route 896 exit, make a right onto Route 896 north for about 100 yards to US Route 13. The WAWA is at the corner of 896 and 13. We can gas up and get something to drink, then head south on DE Route 1 at 9:30 AM. I'll be providing updates, including my cell phone number, as the 30th looms closer. I'll probably ask for confirmations so we know who plans to take the ride, and then take a head count at WAWA.

I'd like to stop at the DE State Park on Fenwick Island for an hour or so to swim. There is a bath house with showers there, as well as a concession stand. Those who want to swim can swim, if you don't, it's a great place with picnic tables, etc to just sit and talk. We can do that on the way down before lunch, or after lunch on the way back. We can take votes at WAWA. Again, give me your thoughts on what YOU would like to do. Also, chefcpb, exactly where is the "The Cabana Grille"?

Let the ride begin!

Hope to see many of you next Satruday, the 14th, up in Pipersville, Bucks County. (RAGMAN, if you're going, let's go up together??)

Hope you can join us on the 30th! ALso, a bunch of us are meeting up in Bucks County, PA on this Saturday, August 14. I live in Southern Chester County, about 8 miles north of Newark, DE, just off Route 896. You're welcome to join us on the 14th, too.

Well, we didn't go to our Wellsboro, PA weekend, because of the lousy weather forecast. We did the "southern waterfront tour" today instead. Rode down to Cambridge, MD on the eastern shore. Then east across the state to Ocean City, MD. Then north into DE, to Fenwick Island, Bethany Beach, Dewey Beach, Rehoboth, and Lewes. Headed back home from there. It was 355 miles for the day. We would've stayed over somewhere, if it wasn't supposed to rain all day tomorrow. I don't know if I can come to the trip on the 30th now! Just kidding.

Hi Guys. I'm done with business travel for about a week, so it's time to get serious about the ride to Fenwick Island, DE on Monday, August 30. Still planning to meet whomever wants to go at the WAWA, at the intersection of Rt 896 and DELAWARE Route 13, near DELAWARE Route 1.

From one of my previous posts:
If you're coming from the North, come down Delaware Route 1 to the Route 896 exit, make a right onto Route 896 north for about 100 yards to US Route 13. The WAWA is at the corner of 896 and 13. Steve,

I don't mean to beat a dead horse here. Does "Boyd's Corner" sound right for that Wawa location?

In theory, I could come south on US Rt. 1, to 796, through Jennersville, past Ragman's house, to 896. Then 896 to 301/896 south to Rt. 13. Does that sound right? I could avoid I-95 that way.

Where are you and Ragman meeting up, or leaving from? Maybe I could meet up with you in Jennersville, or somewhere.

Thanks,
Gus

Capt, Here is the link for the WAWA store at Boyd's corner:
http://www.wawa.com/storelocator/storeloc-results.asp?StoreNumber=828

The zip code is 19709. If the link above doesn't work, go to www.wawa.com (http://www.wawa.com), then enter 19709 under "Search by Zip".

Yes, your route will work. Ragman and I could meet you at the Sunoco A+ in New London on Route 896 if you want. It is located on Rt 896, about 3/4 mile South of the route 796/896 intersection. The Sunoco A+ will be on your left side. How about 7:45 AM?? That way, the 3 of us can get lost together! That should leave us plenty of time to get to the WAWA by 8:30 or so, and be able to take a break.

Ragman and I haven't talked yet. We'll hook up later today by phone.
Here is my cell phone number in case anyone has questions or needs to cancel:
(484) 678-3420

If those wanting to go will give me a call or e-mail, I'll have their cell numbers in case needed.

The Captain's right (as always), the weather forecast looks good. High at Ocean City, MD is only supposed to be in high 70's so it should be a great day for riding, although if it doesn't feel hot, I will probably skip the dip in the Atlantic at Fenwick Island! We'll talk more at the WAWA tomorrow morning by 9:00 AM.

Sounds good...unless Ragman objects. I don't know if he wants me in his neighborhood. You haven't heard from him, because he's too busy cleaning his bike. Being in the rag business sure comes in handy.

They are calling for 30% chance of thunderstorms during the day, and 50% in the evening. This big storm down south could change everything. If the weather forecast gets worse, I won't be coming. Rain is one thing, t-storms are bad news. I'll call your cell number if I cancel. My cell number is 610-733-4970. Otherwise, I will see you at the A+. Well, its's pouring buckets of rain in southern DE right now. I just heard from a friend in Rehoboth Beach, and saw it on the Weather Channel.

T-Bone, sorry about your father-in-law. We've had alot of illness in my family, too. I know what you must be going through.

I might not get to enjoy my beach vacation, thanks to Hurricane Frances! I hope that it doesn't affect the bike show.

Indian Larry was scheduled to appear at Delmarva Bike Week. It's such a shame...
