I'm heading to Austin for the first week of March for a conference for work. What the heck is there to do in Austin for a week, minus some mandatory conference crap? I wish I could take my bike down there, but I don't think they'll let me check it on the plane...

I know Austin is known for their live music scene, but I'm not sure where to go. I figured I would have to check out the Broken Spoke early in the week, and after that, I've got no clue. Except on Thursday I'm going to try an rent a car and take a tour of the Shiner brewery. Any suggestions on where else to go, what to see, where to eat, or where to drink would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I never go to Austin without eating at the Hula-Hut on Lake Austin, it's not far from down-town at all. It's a mix of Polynesian(sp) and Mexican. Just awesome, try the shrimp tacos, you won't be sorry! www.hulahut.com

Take an extra day or two and rent a bike. Check out the hill country south and west of Fredericksburg! You won't be disappointed!

Thanks for the info guys. I'll try to check out that Hula Hut. Unfortunately, I won't have a chance to rent a bike. Heading back home Friday afternoon once the conference let's out. Not much spare cash to extend this trip right now.

Sfuzzi's on 6th street for some awesome italian food. 6th street is the strip for night life. Guadelupe street is good night life too, but geared more to the college crowd. Congress street bridge at sunset to see the bats. Go see the capital building. San Antonio is just down the road if ya want to see the Alamo. Also, Wimberly is an awesome little town with an old world feel and it's just down the road a bit from Austin.

I'm going to visit my sister, who just moved there in Austin, this Summer (probably in July). Any VTXers willing to meet another rider from NC? Yes, I will be riding there.

You oughtta just go in June while the ROT Rally is going on(www.rotrally.com), although anytime is a great time to ride around Austin. I'll be there during the ROT Rally along with some friends.

wow! How convenient is this response? My Boys miss their last two days of school and I leave after I put them on a plane to see their grandparents, I am "kickstand up" on the Southern leg of my 19-state, 5500+ mile trek. I will be on the road during the first half of the rally (11-14 June 2009); however, I should be arrive on the 13th!
