Just got this from the AMA, the Illinois senate will be having a hearing on adding a helmet law to the books. ALL motorcycle riders and passengers would be required to wear DOT/Snell rated helmets

Two bills that would require all motorcycle operators and passengers to wear helmets that meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 218 will be heard on Wednesday, February 25.
House Bill 925 (http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/billstatus.asp?DocNum=925&GAID=10&GA=96&DocTypeID=HB&LegID=42496&SessionID=76), sponsored by Karen A. Yarbrough (D-Broadview), will be heard by the House Vehicles & Safety Committee on February 25 at 10:00 a.m. in the Capitol Building, room 115, in Springfield, Illinois.
Senate Bill 1351 (http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/billstatus.asp?DocNum=1351&GAID=10&GA=96&DocTypeID=SB&LegID=42543&SessionID=76), sponsored by Donne E. Trotter (D-Chicago), will be heard by the Senate Public Health Committee on February 25 at 1:00 p.m. in the Capitol Building, room 212, in Springfield, Illinois.
If you can’t attend either hearing, consider contacting both committee chairpersons and your representative and senator.
The House Vehicles & Safety Committee is chaired by Representative John D'Amico (D-Chicago); his telephone number is (217) 782-8198.
The Senate Public Health Committee is chaired by Senator William Delgado (D-Chicago); his telephone number is (217) 782-5652.

Looks like there hasn't been a vote in the house, and no schedule for it. The senate was supposed to have a vote yesterday, but got postponed. So we have more time to call and complain!

From what I understand, this is just a preliminary vote to see if they can get it on the schedule for later

...Yea, and these "do gooder politicians' prolly DON'T even own their own motorcycle(s) let alone know how to drive one and these boneheads are unfortunately the ones that hold Illinois' motorcycle enthusiasts fate in their hands regarding deciding on goofy mandatory helmets laws and acceptable exhaust volume??? :yikes::yikes::yikes:

i just called. they said it is still in the commitie then is still has to be voted on three times after that. there is a while before it. personally I think the transportation division has a lot more to worry about than that. like maybe how hazardous our ROADS are.

ABATE in IL has played a large part in keeping a helmet law off the books thus far. I'll bet their lobbyists and lawyers are working overtime. I'd be surprised to see this pass in IL anytime soon.

I own a helmet and I probably wear it 50-70% of the time (not a big fan of wearing it when it's real hot out as its a full and its get hot in there...lol). But I can't understand helmet laws or for that matter seat belt laws (though I always wear seat belts). Why does anyone else CARE if I wear a helmet or not? What business is it of theirs? If you want to wear a helmet, seat belt, or even a 5 point harness, go right ahead...but butt out of my business. :doorag:

Here is an email that I received from John Milner who is an Illinois Senator from the 28th district.
"Dear Keith,
I agree! I'm a rider myself and I believe it should be the riders choice. This bill surfaces every year and every year it fails - hopefully that will happen again.
Thank you for your comments. I will be opposing this legislation.
John Millner"
Here is the letter I sent to him

The Honorable John J. Millner
Illinois Senate
Illinois State Senate
Springfield, IL 62706
Dear Senator Millner:
I am opposed to Senate Bill 1351. Us as motorcycle riders are already
aware of the danger when we decide to ride the bike. It should be up to
the individual to choose if they want to wear a helmet or not. I want you
to vote NO on Senate Bill 1351.
Sincerely,
Keith Kmilek

I just received an email from Paul Frolich who is in the Illinois House of Representatives 56th district.
"I wouldn't worry. This bill will not even come up for a vote. There is no chance it will pass."
And here is the letter I sent to him
