I got the okay to go to Sturgis this summer.
I have never been nor have I ever made a long trip as such on a bike. I live in Southeast Kansas. If I go, I would ride up there and back.
Never been before, I am not sure when is the best time to go. At the beginning or the end.:dontknow:
I will be staying in a motel. There still are rooms available.
Any suggestions? Anyone riding through southeast Kansas or nearby, that I could ride with?

Mario,
Sturgis SD is in a great area, you can see the badlands, Mt Rushmore, the parks, black hills, Crazy Horse monument, Dead Wood, Devil's Tower, Jewel Cave and much more, but you may have more fun going before or after bike week when the place isn't over run with drunks. The last time I went was in 89 and have heard it is ten times more crowded now. Of course you won't see the hill climbs or tittie contests. You will see lots of motorcycles in the area all summer, went through last June saw lots of bikes running around, but could still get a room, find a camping spot or find a place to eat.
Oh hell, everybody otta go once. PM Blackhills for info.

Dude, if your riding out there you should camp. Party down and not have to ride to hotel. Lots of good campgrounds with live concerts and such, all included in price

We went last year. We got a room at the Roadway Inn - Mt Rushmore in Rapid City. Great room and great price. It wasn't that far off the path. A lot of guys camp but after riding from VT, we looked forward to a little comfort. Felt a lot better than a sleeping bag on the ground. Quiet too!

we go up ever year, we've always hit the first part of the week. Motel prices are hi, but its easier on he body. we've stayed at deadwood. either way motels or camping you'll enjoy it. you only live once-ride safe, tipper. we're in west nebr-but we trailer up usually.

I've gone every year since 1973 ( missed 3 times) Beautiful area with lots to see as posted above. If you want to part go during bike week it is pricey and crowded compared to other times week before or week after. Just decide what you want. Have fun and enjoy the scenery
I now head out the week before and stay in downtown Rapid City as it seems like a good stepping off point to get anywhere. Plan a day to do Rushmore and Crazy Horse another day for Devil's Tower and a third for downtown Sturgis and Deadwood. Honda dealer in Rapid City is pretty good about getting you in and out if you need service.
PM if you need anything else I'll be heading out for the week before more than welcome to ride with

Thank you for your response. Hey JohnnyB, it looks like I decided to go the beginning of Sturgis. I hesitated on making the trip, but heck, "you only live once.":doorag:
I made a motel reservation in Deadwood. Yes, the motels are pricey but I want a nice bed and a shower.
I will be leaving from southeast Kansas on the 2nd of August. If anyone that is heading to Sturgis at this time, give me a shout and we can ride together.
Thank you and Ride Safe,

3 of us will be going from Michigan this year. We have a campsite at the Bulldog camip ground. Could probably fit in a stray or two. They charge $100 per week, per man. That is cheap if you check around.

Hello Ronkiene,
Thank you for your response. Unfortuantely, I'm not much of a camper. I had someone invite me to stay with them in a apartment they are leasing in Sturgis.
I am lucky because the cost is very inexpensive and it is close to the main attractions.
So thank you anyway.

If we have a lot of people going to Sturgis maybe we should organize a VTX get together at some bar on some certain date. We could have everybody put it on their own state message boards as well as the national. I have never been before so I don't know the places to meet.

That sounds like a good idea!! :D
I have never been there before so this will be my first time.
I will be there on Aug. 2 through Aug. 6.
Let me know if you guys are intersted and someone that is familiar with the area, can suggest a place for us VTX riders to meet.

Hello Tipper,
Where in Deadwood are you staying at? I had motel reservations at the Comfort Inn in Deadwood but I canceled my motel reservations.
Their prices are high. But I guess that is normal for that time of the year.

I'll be going back up there this year too. I think I'm leaving the 1st and coming back the 7th or 8th. My plans this year is to stay up there Sat. night then take off to Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and maybe a corner of Wash. and Oregon, then back to the rally Thur. evening, Fri, and maybe Sat.

I'm thinking of going...
Heading from St.L to KC then North on 29 and W on 90.
According to my trip planner its right at 1,000 miles for me, and about 14.5hrs driving time(at 70mph hwy speed), not counting stops for fuel/eats/restroom.
$70 each way for gas.
Guess I could hit it hard and get an iron butt in both directions!

It's about 1300 miles from Detroit. Staying away from freeways and taking secondary roads. Especially through the praries. We may go to see some chicks in Montana which would make our trip 4,000 miles total.

hey Rlsiv Where can I get one of those maps showing the states you rode to.
Can't find my link to the one I used, but there are several websites out there. Just google "state, map, visited".
Here's one:

Hello Huskergary,
Hey, I may ride with your group. I realize there is still time before August, but let me know when and what time you are leaving on the 2nd, and I could meet you in Lincoln, Ne.
I live in southeast Kansas. According to Mapquest, Lincoln is a little over 5 hrs from here.
I may pm you or you can do the same and we can discuss the trip more in detail.
