Calling all gourmands, gourmets, renowned chefs and lovers of food!
What's a good brand or type of rice to buy for my rice cooker?
I had some pretty good rice a lady friend picked out. When I needed more I bought Safeway's Select Calrose Rice. Extra Fancy (whatever the f.. that means).
Rinsed well and cooked as usual. The stuff was like semi-glue. The info on the package said "Do not rinse before cooking". So the second time I did not rinse. This batch came out like a plug of ultra-glue. I mean the stuff belonged on a construction project as the latest space-age adhesive-technology miracle product for gluing bridges and submarine bases together. Permanently.
This crap is going back to Safeway for refund/exchange.
Need suggestions for good rice.
Thanks.

Shirley buys our rice at Costco. Of course it takes a 1-ton chasis to haul the bag home but it sure turns out perfect every time. White bag, red writing. Beyond that, I dunno.

I prefer Trader Joe's brand Organic Basmati Rice. Just follow the directions on the bag ;)

Butch,
I think it's the same Tracy uses, Niko Niko Calrose Rice. It can be purchased at Safeway, Albertsons too but it's not cheep. As you said Costco is cheeper but you have to use a hand truck to bring it out of the store.

The bag is white with blue & red writing.

Tai Jasmine Rice....nothing like it...totally different from the others. Just rinse a couple times and don't use too much water, Does not turn real sticky and glue-like and smells wonderful. (Two Korean Wives:yikes:)

Todd, you are absolutely correct.

In hindsight, just go to Happy Teriyaki #500, or whatever they are up to now...combo teriyaki with gyoza...going to lunch now.

Depending on your taste in rice - For my family, there are two types of rice we eat regularly (being married to a Thai woman) - glutinous rice and regular long grain rice.

For the regular long grain rice, regardless of what it says on the bag, we wash until the water is somewhat clear (3 times should do it). This rice cook in the rice cooker. In the case of the glutinous rice, we soak for hours, rinse them and put them on the bamboo rice cooker to steam cook them. This kind of rice, Thai/Laotion they eat more often than other race.

As far as brand name, we don't stay with one brand. Because one brand can have a good batch of rice at one time and not on others. If you've had Vietnamese food and you like the taste of rice they served. I suggest you go to a busy oriental market and ask for a new crop regular long grain rice. They'll point you to them. We had good luck doing it this way.

Like others have mentioned about brining hand truck :D, they normally come in 25lbs or 50lbs bags. Although, I've seen some markets split and sell them in smaller portions.

+1 on the Costco rice. Comes out nice in our rice maker - course we like "sticky rice".

Thanks for the input, all!
I am somewhat of a Costco guy. They've changed my way of thinking. Now I get panicky when I'm down to my last 25 rolls of TP. But I've resisted doing the extra work to warehouse bigger quantities of basic food staples like sugar, flour, rice, etc. I think their smallest package of rice is one rail car. ;)
Actually it's a 25 lb. bag I believe. I'll probably try that Organic Basmati Jon mentioned also.
For the time being I just got another brand/type from Safeway. 5 lb bag of California long grain.

I'm a fan of the Thai Jasmine rice too. Asian gal I know washes the rice many times and it makes a big difference.

My rice cooker instructions seem to be a bit generous with the amount of water so I've taken to shorting it just a bit too.
