I'm not the only one who missed the memo...

Monday @ 60 miles from home I could not shift up from 2nd!!
After stopping and being able to shift by hand (and thinking WTF?)
I was able to continue on my way by tapping the toe shifter down
just a tad before I shifted up. Because of this and the fact that
when it went into gear there were no funky noises (besides the
Earth Wind & Fire on the iPod but that's another story) I wasn't too
worried.

When I got home I opened the books only to find out that inspecting
the return spring included removing the exhaust, draining the oil,
sacrificing a lamb, burning candles, etc. Being fresh out of lambs I
went to the VTXOA 1800 Tech board and typed in Shifter Trouble.

Apparently, I am not the only one with this problem! The cure is EZ
and will be part of my spring cleaning from now on:

1. Loosen driver floorboard enough to remove bolt holding heel/toe shifter
to floorboard. Unplug horn.
2. Remove floorboard from shifter. It may be tight so you may have to
twist it back and forth until it works free.
3. Clean shaft that fits into shifter. Lube up with grease (I used lithium).
4. Clean out and lube shaft housing on shifter.
5. Reassemble.
6. Go for test ride and notice within 1-2 blocks that your bike has never shifted this smooth!

Hey! Just saved yourself ~$100. by not bringing it to the dealer. If you want to spend the $$$ anyway I'll PM you my address

Is that just happening on the 1800's?

Good tip Jeff, but... your were late on that memo. All 30,000 plus members on the VTXOA knew that already:lol: kidding

I'm not sure...would just take a moment to check out your shifter pivot.
If there is a shaft and a sleeve then my guess is that it could use a quick
lube every once in a while.

You might want to check with Caps, he's the master of the quick lube job!
Just takes a few minutes and a dozen donuts
