i've been off the road for over a year now and new things pop up every day that i'm not aware of, also i know this will sound like a stupid question to some, but i've heard memphis called a lotta things in my life 'big shelby, bluff city, mud island, king cotton, just to name a few of the more complementary ones. but what's with this king willie *****?

King willie is the man responsible for increasing the population and cash flow in Olive Branch and Southaven, MS, Fayette County and Tipton County TN, as well as West Memphis, AR. New subdivisions of houses, shopping malls and all of the governmental infrastructure have sprung up in these areas, thanks to the king and his court of jesters. :dontknow::(

many thanks to both you. we long distance truckers managed to give most large cities monikers that fit but we kept changing memphis. they now have one that will probably stick.

I've been a City of Memphis employee for a little over 20 years now. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to get anything done through city hall now.:roll:

I have a small clue...the PITA it was to change a title over after my grandfather passed...I had the will, the title and everything else needed...still took 2 months...if that's just the city DMV office I fear for anyone dealing with city hall.:yikes:

Just an example of the management. Our former hvac man, retired now, told them last October that the cooling tower could not be patched anymore, they have to buy a new one. They sat on it for 4 months before ever sending it out for bids. Just this week the company started working on the new one. No a/c so far this year has been a B***h!

My aunt works at FedEx, has for about 16 years now . . . many of her co-workers of the darker complexion have told her they don't care that Slick "King" Willie is a crook, they know he is a crook, but because the majority of the population of Memphis is Black, there should be a Black man running the city, period!
I don't say that to be less than PC or to sound racist, I'm NOT! But for this city to keep re-electing a known crook and swindler, known to put convicted felons into positions they have no business being in SIMPLY because he is a Black man, is outrageous!!

That's the same comment I've heard from black co workers that other wise seemed to be intelligent people...that comment from them made me kinda rethink how intelligent they really were.

Buddy of mine works for the city now, he and I worked together a few years ago, and I'll protect his identity, but he told me King Willie doesn't even have e-mail, he does EVERYTHING by paper, so it can be easily destroyed and there is no trace of his shady deals!!

He pushes things around his desk and waits until deals are about to fall apart, then hands them over to a buddy to fix and he looks like a hero.

He has reaped HUGE rewards off these crazy land deals around town, the man has literally made millions by practically giving land development deals to cronies, who give him huge kick-backs on the back-end. No-bids, just under-handed, back-door deals and they're all getting rich off them.

We certainly don't want this post to digress into something other people might find crazy or offensive, not the point of the post or the site, but for those of you who are not from Memphis, you need to understand that this city has quite a few issues.
Like Boydog said, Willie Herenton is responsible for increasing the size and population of the surrounding areas as people flock OUT of Memphis in droves!!!
He will then come on TV, on the local news and tell everyone listening that it's a White Agenda that is causing it, and not him!

Living here is unbelievable, and the ONLY reason we have not left is because when we leave, we are LEAVING, like gone from this part of the country.

By the Bye . . . along the same lines of this . . . Mayor Willie Herenton and the Memphis City Council just had a press conference to announce Herenton's resignation effective July 10th!!!!

Don't get too crazy excited over that news . . . this is just so he can officially open his bid and run against Steve Cohen for the 9th District in Congress!
Earlier polls this year showed he would get slaughtered in a race for State Congress, but now that's it's official, who knows what might happen.

He has already come out and blasted Cohen for his efforts, and stated he is not impressed with ANYTHING Steve Cohen has done.

I am personally not a big fan of Steve Cohen's myself, but I will vote for him TWICE if it means keeping Slick Willie Herenton out of State Government!!!

William (King Willie, Slick Willie) Herenton is NO LONGER the Mayor of Memphis, TN!!!

If we had not had such a wicked bad set of storms rolling thru here yesterday, it would have been front page news. I actually find it quite funny that he didn't have the glory of going out, and making a foolish spectacle of himself, he was up-staged by Mother Nature.

Those of us who are still stuck in this town, of course, are not sure things are going to get better, at least in the short term, but at least Willie isn't calling the shots from City Hall anymore!!!

I have to agree with you,I lived in memphis around 34 years ago,attended messick high school near the intersection of park and highland streets,and loved it,used to ride our bikes everywhere and never had any problem with anyone,but since the hoods and thugs took over the local goverment memphis went into the toilet,as you know there are parts of memphis where the citizens are afraid to go outside because of all the crime going on.New leaders may help,but when you let the crime genie out of the bottle he is hard to put back in,even though I dont live in memphis anymore I would love to see it back to where it was,or as close as it can get,a big city with a small town personality.
