So, I took a job with a temp service back in January, working for an area manufacturer. I made decent money and only worked Monday through Thursday, 6 am to 4:30 pm (yes, 4 tens). That means since January, I've had Friday, Saturday and Sunday off every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Two weeks ago, said manufacturer gave me (and about 8 other employees) the opportunity to go to work directly for them. We were all told we'd be able to choose either first or second shift and we'd end up at the closest plant (out of four) to the city we live in. After four days of classroom training, we found out there was no choice of shift and that we'd all be starting - and for all intents and purposes, staying - on second shift and that we'd be sent to the plant that's the farthest from the city we live in (I now have a 40 minute drive to work, one way, instead of a five minute drive). We were also told we'd be working a regular five day work week, at 8 hours a day. Again, after we got where we were going, we found out they actually work 50 hours a week (and sometimes 60), with the opportunity to work Saturdays and Sundays as well (at time-and-a-half and double time, respectively). I have not worked a weekend since late 2003 and I haven't worked a shift other than first for about the same amount of time. I have a lot of things I enjoy doing in the evenings, so between the crap shift, which pretty much ruins my social life and puts the kibosh on the rest of my "summer of George" and the fact that I'm working my ass off for a minimum of 50 hours a week, I'm pretty damn miserable. Last Monday, I started looking for another job and have already had two interviews. Now, here's where I need some advice: If you were me and money wasn't a big concern to you (all my bills are paid in full and on time every month and some of my payments are three and four months ahead of schedule), would you continue to look for a different job, possibly making less money, but closer to home and on a more desirable shift or would you do what I thought of about an hour ago, which is to work a minimum of 50 hours a week and put the difference in pay between my old position and my new one into a savings account. When the money in that account is equivalent to three month's living expenses, quit my job and maybe spend the next month or so taking it easy and looking for something more enjoyable. If I go that route, I should achieve what I'm after in about 15 weeks. However, if I go 20 weeks, I could stay through Christmas, which we actually shut down and get paid for (about 12 days). Then when I go back, I could give my notice and be out by the first or second week of January. Again, what say you all - keep looking for something better and get out of my crap job ASAP or suck it up for 4 months and then take it easy for a few weeks? I've also been having some pretty serious issues with my back, which has a lot to do with stress, so taking some time off wouldn't necessarily be me just being lazy, but maybe giving myself some time to heal up. Vote in my poll and reply if you want to.

If something better pops up, by all means bail out on these lying scumbags. Otherwise, I'd stick it out until Christmas. Back in my single days, I shunned that second shift (3p-11p) like the plague. Totally ruins the social life. Friends and hookups are more important than big money. Unless it means going on welfare, I'd go with the social life.

Work until Jan.
Keep looking for better.
Save the money.
Maybe the economy will improve a little by then and your prospects will be better.
Why do companies lie to new employees about the job?
It makes no sense.
They lose a lot of good ones that way.
Telling the truth, A good employee will most likely take the job and won't leave early because of the lie and will be more productive because they will have more trust.
Long hard work at employer you trust=good job.
Long hard work at employer that lied about it = crappy job for scumbags.
Bad way to start a new relationship of any kind. JMO.

Personally unless your independently wealthy in this economy I'd be thankful that you have a job. So you drive 40 minutes to work? sure it's not in your back yard....so what?
Your responsibility is to your family......if the money situation is covered and you can get by w/o the income then maybe NBD.
As for second shift...I liked second shift.. I got to bed about the normal time I went to bed and I still got up around 7a.m. I had plenty of time for the kids and saw my friends on the weekend.
All in all no one can tell you what to do. You have to live with your decision.

Another option; Work your ass off and retire 10 years earlier and take Monday through Sunday off for the rest of your life.
Personally, I'd bank the extra income while looking for a job that's closer, about the same pay or better, and requires fewer hours. If that kind of job never materializes, just keep banking the extra and leave the work force that much sooner ;)

I know what I did and I know what I wish I would have done.
I worked my ass off when I was younger for my wife for my kids. I took the highest paying job I could find with horrible hours and horrible conditions. I did make very good $$$ though.
If I had it to do over i would have moved to a different area, obtained more education and found a straight day job with better hours.
I have the dream job now but had to work my ass off till I was 50 to get it.
I missed my kids growing up and lost my health taking the route I did

I have applied for a few day positions, but I've been told it could be up to six months before I hear anything on them. If I happen to get onto first shift before my deadline, things will probably change and I'll stay there long-term. I could even work Saturdays and Sundays and leave before 20 weeks is up - it'd probably be more like 10 or 12 then.
EDIT: BTW, 12RPilot, my second shift is 3:30 pm to 2 am. Three to eleven wouldn't be so bad...

Lets see.....
Economy sucks
Unemployment on the rise
Houses going on the market at piss poor prices due to loss of jobs
No light at the end of the tunnel
By all means quit and look for another job - I know plenty of people that would be glad to replace you and not complain once about a 40 minute commute.
If you have a job ... keep it ...
... and always be looking for better ...
... and ...
... if possible ...
... change your attitude ...
Try to find something your enjoy in what you're doing ...
It will make the work easier ...
opinions vary ...
all blessings ...

Send 'em my way then, tough guy. Financially, I've never been better off, even before this **** job. My VTX was paid off 4 months early, my big screen was paid off 6 months early, my car will be paid off two years early. My credit score is as close to perfect as it can get, I have zero credit card debt and I'm sittin' on a couple grand in the bank. Maybe some of you should have made better choices when things were going well.

"Tough Guy"?
You ask for an opinion and then flame me for giving one and at the same time make an assumption that I have made poor choices?
I have my job because I have marketable skills and almost 30 years experience. I did not get it through a temp service. Currently I have a $30 million project that we open bids for on 8/18, with all the financing in place and that guarantees me work through 2011. I have a 40 mile commute each way and I get paid to ride my 2009 Gold Wing while I do it and get .44 a mile for gas.
You financed a TV and have a "Couple of grand in the bank" and have the gall to tell me I should have made better choices?

Bottom line is life's too short. Do what makes you happy as long as it doesn't burden others....

If I were in your predicament I would have a talk with the dude that made the promises. Let him know if he doesn't keep his word that I will be looking for a better job. People will only push you as far as you allow. I once got in the middle of a supervisors desk and told him how much effort it took to keep from kicking his ass for what they were pulling. I was the best hand he had, but always feared losing my job so I took what they put out until that day. The next day he called my office to ask if I was interested in interviewing for a manager job.
Since that day I have always let my supervisors know what was on my mind and they seem to appreciate it. If you are a good hand they will work with you.;) sb

Roughrider is correct. I have worked at the same place for 28 yrs. I have always worked hard but I have also told them my true feelings when need be. I have a great job nowdays and management respects me. I think most of them do appreciate a straight shooter.

For anyone still following this thread, I've found a new job and will start it on Monday (August 31st). I'll be out of the factory and back out on the road as a delivery driver/outside sales guru. The hourly pay is great, plus I get commission on any new accounts I bring in, plus residual commission on those accounts, as long as they remain a customer with the company. It also sounds like I'll have the opportunity to get my four day work week back (Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and I can do a lot of the prospecting stuff on my own time, as I'm out and about - eating out with the family, drinkin' beers with my friends, etc. Whoopie!

Good for you  :congrats:
FWIW I won't do a commute especially if it's in city. I get both to work and home completely pi$$ed off and drained every day. It's a life wrecker for me.
I lived 10 back road minutes to my job and my employer in their infinite stupidity, contracted out the O&M of the plant I worked at and reclassified all of us to different positions. Which meant a 30 to 40 minute cross town commute to the pipe yard. That lasted about a year and I moved. Now I have a 10 minute back road commute again and I picked up a house dirt cheap, all things considered.
