Not really its VERY easy to access the web without ever leaving a single trace on your pc.
Google Ubuntu Live CD. The entire OS runs from the CD and memory. Not a single shred of your surfing habits or info will remain on that pc. No hard drive is even needed.
Once you reboot its ALL GONE and Ubuntu is the most secure O/S commonly available. Totally free too.
Windows PE also supports this feature and some have a browser.
The CARS EULA is total crap but the reporter is not informed about many simple ways to avoid any privacy problem and definitely trying to scare everyone.
Anyone surprised by it ?

I thought the topic was about CAR.GOV stating that the consumer will grant the gvt access and ownership one ones personal PC when they sign up for it. Which is untrue.
If your on some other topic A little heads up in the beginning of your posts would be helpful ;)

As a matter of course,...when you take the gubment on as a partner,.. by definition it becomes SOP for them to delve into whatever aspect of you life they see fit. Same as you would if you were asked to become a participent in a business venture. When you PAY your dime you might get a nickles worth of whatever you're buying. ASK for a dime,...and it's a different ballgame.

With so many people not even knowing what a 'EULA" is,
let alone anything about Ubuntu. (thanks for the info)
I was glad the reporter brought this up.
This shows that everyone should read all of the
"End User License Agreement"
before signing or agreeing, especially if it a government website.
And to think, I thought parts of the Patriot Act were invasive.
ps: this site has changed the user agreement after the Glenn Beck
show brought so much attention to this.
This is truly frightening. I'm so dumbfounded by it I don't know what to say.

Umm, ive been using it for years and yes the CD is BOOTABLE and will run the entire OS including Mozilla completely from RAM not your hard drive in LIVE CD mode.
Reboot and BOOM all info is GONE. Pretty simple to understand. ;)
You are not REQUIRED to install it. It will run just fine WITHOUT ANY hard drive in the PC and that is the only part that can actually SAVE info in a semi permanent form. You can CHOOSE to install or save files using the LIVE CD version but it is not REQUIRED. The CD itself is finalized so no further data can be written to the CD.
I never said INSTALL it because it is NOT required.
Did you even try it or.......
BTW i have over 15yrs of PC hardware experience so im damn sure i know what im talking about and VERY familiar with Ubuntu's LIVE CD feature. I also built and do work for federal and state authorities on their FRED PCs. Those systems are designed to get electronic forensic data from confiscated PCs. The data is used as evidence in court to bust pedophiles and other online predators. So im fairly skilled at retrieving data that someone is trying to hide.
So please explain to me HOW going to this website will leave ANY trace i was there on my hardware after i shut it down running in LIVE CD mode. I can even hardware LOCK my firmware from exploits and my cdrom does not have flashable firmware. Ram is completely cleared on shutdown.
Newer ASUS mainboards also have a feature called Express Gate and will log you onto the internet without a CD or hard drive in the PC. I can hit the net in about 5 seconds using this feature. It runs from a small linux kernal imbedded in firmware.

Any organization, public or private will have a similar statement regarding the fact that when you are remotely accessing their secures system, that your remote terminal will also be viewed as a part of that system while connected. It is not unusual or unique. Beck is making a big deal out of it and scaring the general public into believing that when you go to get rid of your clunker that the gvt is going to claim ownership of your personal PC and use it against you. There is no interaction between the consmers and the program, It is between the car dealer and the program, and there are several items in place to help ensure that dealers adhere to it.
wouldnt it be more concerning if there wasnt any statements on file sharing?
I don't worry regarding the clunker program other than it's more tax money down a rathole. I have nothing on my Pc I'm afraid of the govt seeing as I assume if they want,...they're 'in" regardless.
Why the hell would ya need to own a Pc to take advantage of the clunker program isn't a problem I'm ever gonna have.

you dont need a PC. the privacy agreement is for the participating car dealer, as well as the agreement about file ownership when connected
as far as the bad, most of the "ah ha, we got him" items I see regarding him, at least those that have intrigued me enough to research, I have not seen hold water. But I do most definitely agree that the cost of all this is a problem, however, I dont care who is in charge, I dont see how it would ultimately be much different in the short term.

The total price tag would be cheaper and go further IF the dummy just GAVE every payer of income tax a million dollars in cash. Houses would be paid off w/o foreclosure, cars would be sold w/o govt needing the buy the companies, credit card debt paid, college monies paid,..ect.

US census bureau statistics for 2005-2007 states that there are 233,658,276 individuals age 16 and over who are employed. Let me know how far $4279 dollars gets ya. or where you have the 234.6Trillion stashed to make your suggested payout, your point is well taken, but equally unrealistic.
I have an average family income (about 100K between my wife and I), 6% Mortgage rate on a loan that is less then 1/4 our monthly net income, 2 cars paid for, about 10K in personal debt and I've managed to double by 401K in the past 7 months. I have as associates degree at a fairly normal job at a fairly normal company. the only $500.00 sneakers I own are on my car.
I too am concerned about the economy, as well as the state of the nation and the world. I have a 16month old sone and a newborn on the way, I fear for their future. I have NO political alliance, and personally feel the the system would best be fixed by eliminating the system and starting over, with more than a 2 party majority who can do nothing but outposture the other side at our social, financial, and national expense. You wanna fix it, help do something, not reiterate extreme left or right leaning talking points based on the spoon fed information from your particualr sides media soap box. Get involved, start local, be heard, be ethical, educated and righteous. We the people have been left behind long ago, equally divided on what to do, but unlike those we elect, we're not getting paid to argue about it.
I said taxpayers,....not tax filers. I IE,..a kid making below poverty level income at a part time pizza joint ain't gettin' a million.
Some of the cost would be offset by the taxes collected on the million so if ya qualified folks carefully ( maybe require a 5 year continued taxPAYER status it's be just a do-able as all these feel good programs combined,..which will top out at many more trillions than isn't even spoken of yet.
Point being,...the cash obamma is supposedly handingh out,...isn't going anywhere anyone can point to with certainty.

That has got to be the most sensible assesment I have read in a very long time. VERY well said sir.
Simple arithmetic dictates that dividing the vote by more than two ends up with minority rule. Look no further than Chavez to see what that buys ya.
Call the parties whatever ya want, or dump both the GOP and DNC and start over,..BUT,..if ya dilute the vote,...the "have-not" malcontents will continue to rob you thru excessive taxation and govt control.
OTOH,...if you're a have-not" yourself then it stands to reason you'd push for multi-party politics.

I said taxpayers,....not tax filers. I IE,..a kid making below poverty level income at a part time pizza joint ain't gettin' a million.
ok Remove the poverty line demographic and you reduce the count by about 20M. only adds a few hundred on to the 4Kish total, But for arguments sake, lets divide the taxpayer number in 1/2, then assuming 115Million taxpayers, in the US so then its 9K to each person. While 9,000 is not chump change by any stretch, it still would not resolve the problem for a large percentage of the population., nor does it do anything to pay down deficite spending, No I dont know the answer, I do not believe the Gvt does, or cares, either, neither the current nor the prior administration.

With 2 primary parties, all I hear is one side call "fowl" whenever the deck is stacked in one parties favor, as we have right now. Would not 3 equally sized entities possibly prevent that. The original plan was supposed to be a check and balance system, 3 operating branches of Gvt to keep em all in line, how does that occur when at any given time those 3 branches are able to gain a majority rule by virtue of the same 2 party system operating throughout. Idealy (which we know is just fancy talk for, Im dreaming) Id like to see the office of the president as operating outside of the party. no affiliations, that way the 2 remaining branchs can argue and pass laws and funding based soley on the merit of the proposal at hand, not based on party lines. (yeah yeah, I know, fluffy bunnies, and rainbow wishes for everyone, i said ideally)

Bootable OS's run off of RAM, when power is cut off to RAM everything on said RAM is lost. Ever had a computer crash when you were typing a report for school or work and you lost whatever parts weren't saved? That's because whatever word processor you were using was operating in RAM, and you save things to your hard drive. You can literally take your hard drive out of your computer and run any bootable OS.

What you thought was a lost report was simply lack of technology and know how to retrieve said report.
The minute you boot your PC and touch your keyboard you start to leave traces whether there is a "key logger, etc. there or not". You may think differently but your wrong.

Its OBVIOUS you have not downloaded and burned the ISO to a CD.
RIGHT NOW i am on a PC with NO hard drive attached. I am running totally from a RAM drive created buy the bootable CD. I shut down this PC and ALL data is gone except what i burned to the CD when i made it.
Ubuntu LiveCDs let you run Ubuntu from a CD-ROM without needing to be installed permanently. LiveCDs are great for testing hardware, doing system recovery or showing new people Ubuntu. LiveCDs aren't so good for day-to-day use though, as they're slower and it's hard to keep settings between sessions.I can also put it on a thumb drive that is hardware write protected after making it. It is impossible to write to a hardware locked thumbdrive or SD card. Even some hard drives have a hardware lock read ONLY jumper. ALL my SCSI hard drives have them.

Educate yourself.
Here is a small list of just a few bootable CDs that can log onto your network and get online with no harddrive needed. Many can also be install permanently if you choose. Some are only 64mb but can still get online without installing them.

Ever hear of Windows PE or BART PE? They both have similar features but Windows based. Bart PE or Winternals both boot and run COMPLETELY from your CD and RAM then processed by your CPU. usually a hard drive is connected for these utlities to fix problems with data that is saved.

Bart's PE Builder helps you build a "BartPE" (Bart Preinstalled Environment) bootable Windows CD-Rom or DVD from the original Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 installation/setup CD, very suitable for PC maintenance tasks.
It will give you a complete Win32 environment with network support, a graphical user interface (800x600) and FAT/NTFS/CDFS filesystem support. Very handy for burn-in testing systems with no OS, rescuing files to a network share, virus scan and so on.
This will replace any Dos bootdisk in no time!
The only info/trace i will leave ANYWHERE is the same info i leave when i contact ANY website and NONE of it will be on my PC using the live CD options.
I will bet you $1000 i can setup a pc, boot to Ubuntu live CD and surf for 2 hours. After im done you take it anywhere you like and see if you can find ANY trace of where i have been online or my local network. I doit it everyday at work to test systems that dont get an OS and i want to test the sound, usb ports, video and make sure it gets online/network. Plus it only takes a few minutes for customers in a rush.
I will give you $1000 if you can name 1 site during this test. You put a deposit down on the PC and i will send it to you and even include the CD i used to get online. There will be no hard drive in the PC since it is not needed.
If you lose you bought the PC with your deposit.

What you thought was a lost report was simply lack of technology and know how to retrieve said report.
The minute you boot your PC and touch your keyboard you start to leave traces whether there is a "key logger, etc. there or not". You may think differently but your wrong.
The lost report was an example of the difference between RAM and hard disk space.
But if you remove your hard drive, as Evilgrin is talking about and run a bootable OS, where are these traces you allude to? Where exactly are they being saved at?
If I am wrong, tell me how I am wrong not just that I am. Enlighten me.
