View Full Version : The beginnings of the Overnight Foliage Ride

Just the beginning efforts of the foliage ride. I'm hoping to make it an overnight with a stop in Vermont somewhere for the "overnight". Steve had mentioned making our way to Burlington and lake Champlain. That might be a good stop. I made up just a preliminary route map and I'm sure it will be adjusted. It's pretty ambitious. I figured meeting the northern group in Conway and starting the road trip through the Kancamangas. Anyways, it's just a start. I'm looking at either the weekend of Oct 3-4 or the weekend of Oct 17-18. Let me know your thoughts and we can get a poll up later.

Dan , I just traveled 114 last month from above Warner to the North of Lake Sunapee the road is real bad. After New London it gets better. Dan did you do any room costs in the area?

Thanks for the info Jim. I wasn't planning on that part of 114 anyways. I was taking 103 to 114 in Bradford just north of Lake Massesecum. This was a first draft of the route. It'll get tweaked a bit I'm sure. I was on part of 114 through Henniker and Weare with no problems last month except for a few "bumps".
I haven't checked out rooms yet, since I haven't come up with a definite pit stop. Steve wanted to stop in the Burlington/ lake Champlain area and I thought that might be a good rest spot. Waiting for thoughts from more of the group. (A work in progress since it is a fairly good ride)

Dan,
Linda and I and another couple did a Vermont/Upper State NY ride late in July. We left on a Friday and took 89 to Burlington for time reasons. Stayed at a Holiday Inn about 10 minutes from the ferry. Left Saturday am on the ferry to Port Kent. We travelled some of the nicest roads down to Lake Placid. Had lunch there and ended up in Lake George for the night.
Sunday am we left and hit Bennington VT (Subaru capital of the world)
and cut across lower VT and ended up on 101 (I think).
I can dig up the route #'s we took if you're interested.

Just a sugestion Dan,
If you stay in Burlington area when you leave if you take rt 7 to Middlebury then onto rt 30 to manchester Vt, RT 30 is a 9-9.2 out of ten for riding and it is a 10.5 for senic it goes from moutain views to hills to farm land and everything in between it is on my must ride foliage rides this year good mix of hard and soft woods I personaly think it is as good or better than rt 100 when i rode it last month it was also less traveled.

Not sure what the group will be up for Dave, but if you have the route by all means I'll look it over. There may only be a few of us that will do a lengthy ride like this anyways. Glad you enjoyed your trip in July.

This sounds fun. My wife an I took the bike for part of my vacation and rode the coast of Maine for a few days. She is eager for another M/C vacation / trip. I am not sure if she would like a large group ride or highways though.
Thanks for keeping us informed.

Well Doug, I don't think it'll be a large group. Not too many people will be up for an overnighter. Of course people are welcome to join us along the route, but we'll see how it goes. And as far as highways go......NONE. Elvie prefers the smaller roads as well. Check the link of the route at the beginning of this thread and you'll see. Actually, we would like to make plenty of stops too for foliage pics and such.

Walt & I are heading out next Saturday for the long weekend to Plattsburg NY to catch up with friends camping up there and to drive over and see my Dad in Massena NY, so will pick up whatever stuff I can find for hotels, sights to see etc..not sure what route wer'e taking as yet, thats Walts job..I just follow!! So, everyone talk to the sun gods for us as I won't go if it's raining all weekend, did way to many of them when I was a younger person..I think a fall trip would be great as a group, and meeting the northern group up their way if their coming only fair as they have come south so many times for us..even if we met in Littleton and went over from there it would be closer for them..Good job Steve and Dan getting this started early..see you all soon.

Well, have a good trip next weekend. Elvie and I will be in NYC next weekend for a Filipina party they are having there. Her sisters are going from Virginia as well, so Elvie gets to spend some time with her sisters. After that it will be the Toys for Tots run for us. I'm suppose to work, but I always love the Tots run and try not to miss it. See you soon!

I like the idea of an overnight ride. I'll have to play it by ear to see if I/we will be able to do it and whether or not it'll be solo or 2 up. School and sports activities will be in full force.
I have to agree with Tom on Rte 7 and rte 30. Depending on how and when we enter and exit VT, we should certainly consider those roads to or from our trip.
Perhaps we need to pick a date. That way we can get an idea of who might be able to make the ride and then choose a route that is inclusive of all intended participants.

If we stayed closer to NH, we could go further north and actually ride through the north country, unless it's really cold out I don't have an overwhelming desire to head into vermont and have to wear a lid the whole time.

I know Ilona and Walt wanted to do Vermont for the foliage last year, but then she had the accident. I also know that Ken wanted to travel a good part of Route 100 in Vermont as well. Elvie, wants something different, so Vermont works for her. I'm sure we could probably get something else going which could be just NH. I just wanted to start the overnight ride planning as early as possible. It's all still up in the air for definite plans till more people chime in with there thoughts. I've been focused on getting the gallery back up. Seems to be not letting people upload pics to their personal albums. Lots of large files may be slowing the server down. I just tried a hack to raise the allowable memory to a higher number. Gonna see if that works.

I did a foliage ride to rangely maine a few years ago and it was spectacular, I believe it's 17 that goes to rumford and the views over the lakes can't be beat.
I'm out on the overnight ride, no desire for vermont and a mandatory helmet.

I put in to take the 3rd and 4th off from work to do this ride. I just found out last night that they gave me the 4th but not Saturday the 3rd. I would have rather had it the other way around.
So, as it stands I can't get Saturday off. I still have a couple of weeks to resubmit. They only allow a finite number of employees to be off on any given day. I believe that this is also the Deerfield Fair weekend. Our Social and Rec committee sold discount tickets, so there was probably a high interest.
I can only hope that someone else retracts their request for the 3rd day off which would make room for my approval.

We've had too many people get disciplined for calling in sick after a rejected request for a day off. Going to hope for some common sense. I ask for very little time off. Figures that the one time I need it and it's "no"

Time to bump this thread up :bump::bump:
I need to know who is interested in pursuing the overnight foliage ride to the north country and down through Vermont's route 100 and Quechee Gorge. People can do one day partial rides if they like, but I need to have some definite responses for the overnight, so I can get some ideas on how many roomes we may need and where we will stay. If there is not enough interest, I may shorten the trip a bit, but I still would like to make it an overnight ride. What better way to close out the season. (although I'm sure people will still plan some shorter rides till it starts snowing).
Let me know what you think. Here is the original mapped out trip.

Time for another bump. :bump::bump:
Here's what's up!
I found a nice bed and breakfast in Alburg Vermont, just a couple of miles south of the Canadian border, on the lake and on an island. It's called the Ransom Bay Inn. Looks pretty nice. We would be traveling another 25 miles up from our original route, but we could then take Route 2 down through the lake area on Sunday. The rates seem reasonable for a bed and breakfast. The rates were $105 double occupancy with $15 additional per person. That would be $135 for the room with 2 queen size beds sleeping 4 people. Breakdown is $67.50 per couple, $33.75 per person including breakfast.
As far as who's in for the trip. Looks like the overnight would be myself and Elvie, and Walt and Ilona. No others have checked in for the overnight.
Joe Shaw and Steve said they would meet us somewhere for the ride back on Sunday. We can figure a meeting place later. Doug H wants to know where we will stay in case he can make last minute plans and I think Ken said something about riding up for the Saturday part of the ride. That's it. No other people have checked in. I didn't get a definite from Mike and Beth so as soon as Walt and Ilona give me the OK, I'll book the overnight. In the mean time I'll continue checking out rooms. I'm trying to be frugal, but Would love to wake up to a view. This Inn seemed to be reasonable and on the lake. Let me know your thoughts.
Originally we were going to take 89 down to Burlington from 104A. Now we could take either 89 or route 7 to Swanton and then cross over to Alburg. Sunday we could take Route 2 back down to Route 7 and take that into Burlington for a possible meeting spot. That would put us back on our original course. Thoughts Please. It is after all my first planned bike ride! I know it's a biggie and I hope I'm not biting off more than I can chew!

Well, Steve caught my posts and managed to find a place that was available in St Albans. Reservations are made and we're good to go. Since the only people that actually were a 'go" for the overnight were Ilona, Walt, Elvie and I, the room we got was a room with 2 double beds at a La Quinta hotel. I am at work right now and will post details tomorrow. We will be heading a little further north, but that shouldn't be too bad. I'll adjust the route accordingly tomorrow as well. I'm glad we managed to get a place, the other alternative was to shorten the trip and possibly make it single day run. We are back to the original plan for the overnight. I'll keep you posted.

If someone wants to split a room cost, I'll be in. I'm going alone, no wife, but what else is new. Room cost is $150/ plus tax for 2 full beds and a continental breakfast. I can't swing the total cost and rooms are booking fast for foliage, so if no ones interested, I can't go either, Dan.

Doc.....have to take Elvie back to Mass eye and ear tomorrow, but I'll see if they'll throw in a rollaway bed for an additional charge and we can squeeze into the 1 room. I don't think anyone else was planning the overnight, but if they do, the room will need to be booked quickly. They are definitely going fast. Here is the article I put in on the NH VTX Riders web site as I wrote it.
It has the hotel location as well as both maps for the trip.....one for each day of the ride. As far as time we will leave the hotel on Sunday, I believe breakfast is around 8:00am and check out time is noon, but considering the 6 or better hours of riding the day 2 part of the ride, I wouldn't want to leave any later than 11:00am on Sunday. 10:00am would be better, but I know it's a long ride up to St. Alban straight up 89. The other alternative is to maybe meet in the Burlington area after we do the island loop. It's up to the group.
Steve, what reasonable time would you like to meet?
Here is the article I posted on the web page with hotel location and route maps:
Update to the Fall Foliage Ride
Finalized plans for the Fall Foliage Ride are in place. We have acquired 2 rooms at the La Quinta Inn and Suites in St Albans, Vermont. This will be the stopover for the overnight between Day 1 and Day 2 of the ride. It's a very ambitious ride with about 240 miles going north on day 1 and 260 miles on the southern leg of day 2.
With the addition of a second room, we have space for 1 more couple if anyone is interested. Of course people can meet us along the route for portions of the ride. Some people are already doing only the ride north with us. and some are going to meet us in Vermont for the ride south.
Meeting spots besides the Inn could possibly be in White River Junction somewhere for people who will only be doing a shortened version of the ride. I seperated the route maps by day and included the La Quinta web site and they are below:

Well, I guess that breakfast at 8:00am is out. I'll take a look at the route and see what I can manage.
Joe and Ric: It sounds like any departure time is ok for you both.
The irony about my not getting the day off is that I could probably put in to go home early because it is a slow night. From the mail volume we have on Saturday, they don't need to keep me. However the union rules say no more than 17 can be off and they've reached that, so hence the rejection for the night off.
The union and mgt can, together, agree to allow more than 17 and I've asked the union steward to arrange it if possible. That was better than a week ago and one follow up since. Apparently they can't be bothered to help me out. You know how that goes: if you're not in the "inner circle" you're nobody. That's my hard earned dues at work!

P.S. Will they let you work ˝ a day and go home sick and not gig you for it???

I think Jim is considering riding up to Vermont with us on Saturday. Thge last thing I knew was only you and Joe for the Sunday part of the ride. There may still be people jumping in at the last minute, so maybe just come up with a place and time that you will leave on Sunday and I'm sure you will get some responses.

Mike.....my original time for leaving DD was 9:30am, but could probably make it 9:00am. Looks like you could ride up to Conway with us, and when we hit the Kanc, you could swing up 302 (by your map).
You could also do the Kanc with us and then swing up route 3 toward Berlin. That may not get you there by noon though. Your stop in St Albans is not far from our hotel on Fairfax Rd.
We could meet there on Sunday if you think Beth can handle it. I could make some mods to my original route too, but I have to consider Elvie and the long ride too. I'll check back later, got to pick Elvie up from work.

Ok, here's the game plan for Joe and I at this point for a Sunday run. Neither of us has any desire to spend 3 1/2 hours on I-89.
The developing game plan: From Merrimack / Nashua we are going to head towards Keene and enter VT near Brattleboro. Joe and I (and others we hope) will work our way to Rte 7 and meet up with you guys around Vergennes near the junction of rte 7 and rte 17.
Near as I can estimate, it'll take you guys about 2 1/4 hours (with a break) to do your lake loop and down rte 7 to Vergennes. I'll play around with our route.
Dan: you can probably punch in Vergennes as an additional location and drag it to the junction of 7 and 17 to give you the approx travel time.
So, what we'll need from you is a time to meet in the Vergennes / Junction of 7 and 17 area. We'll plan our start on that meeting time. It sounds to me like it'll be around 12:30ish. Let me know.
Sound like a plan?

Here's on possible route for Sunday. It's ambitious at around 4 hours. I haven't travelled these roads but it does take 3/4 hours off of my original thoughtThis was my original thought which was an alternative that Ken and I thought about riding when he and I did VT.

I think the first option may be the one with those drive times.
We'll wait for a firm meet time from Dan, but we are probably looking at around an 8:00am start. We used Google maps when we took some back roads to White River last Sunday to meet up with Tom. We were probably at least 30 minutes ahead of there projections.
Joe if it's just you and I, you can get off on exit 7 in Nashua and we can meet on Amherst St somewhere. Maybe the McDonalds on Amherst St and Continental Blvd.

I know from Steve's work schedule that sleep would be a good thing to have before such a long road trip. Get yourself an extra hour of sleep Steve and leave at 9:00am. We can plan on meeting you at the junction of 7 and 17 between 1:00 and 1:30pm. We could still leave the hotel around 11:00am and take our time through the islands and still have plenty of time to make it to the junction on time. That would give you at least an extra hour of sleep anyways. Sounds like the return trip plan is pretty good. Let me know and I'll make those meeting times and places a definite.

That might work for us, its about a 3 1/2 hour ride from Manchester to Berlin via Conway.Dont make any changes yet as im not sure we can make it still. Oh and Ilona and walt came by today to finalize their plan for meeting us on Day 1. While they were here, they mentioned that route 7 south of Burlington wasn't a very scenic route so we opted for route 116 out of Burlington which also takes us to Route 17. There is also a junction further south where 7 joins 116. If you swing 116 instead of taking 7 all the way up to 17 you may buy a little more time. 116 joins 17 about 6 miles east of where 7 joins 17. I'll map it out later. Just a thought. 116 looks like a better route scenery wise.

Steve,
Here is the possible change in your route to join us at the junction of 116 and 17 instead of 7 and 17. About 10 minutes more driving (slower road) but puts you more east than route 7. Let me know. Ilona, Walt, Doc, Elvie and I will be at 116 and 17 for 12:30pm. If you decide to go the way you originally mapper it, just keep going east on 17 till you run into us at 116.

Steve,
Here is the possible change in your route to join us at the junction of 116 and 17 instead of 7 and 17.
Here is the possible new route for you: New Route (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&doflg=ptm&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=115647722648546197168.0004749931dc3d7924cee&ll=44.078707,-73.047409&spn=0.300898,0.587769&z=11)
With your routes, this is the total map, day 1 and day 2.
Day 1 = 240 mi – about 6 hours 56 mins
Day 2 = 265 mi – about 7 hours 13 mins

9:00am departure good for you Doc? (from DD) Ilona is working late Friday night and is going to meet us in Lincoln after we get out of the kanc. Then it's off to Vermont. 9am should get us through the kanc around noon and Ilona will meet us around 12:30. Gives us some oportunity for picture stops.

Hey there Rich. Nothing changes. It's like a day time soap opera. You can step away for a bit and the characters are all the same, as is the story line.

Sorry Steve, I can't let this go. Your lost already and we're not even on the road, yet. Your about 4.4 miles off the mark. Your 17 and 116 intersection is where 116 goes south. The actual 17 and 116 intersection that we should meet at is where 116 is coming down from the north. Also, it to my understanding that were taking 17 east to rt 100. It still is very deserted, and there might be a nice tree to meet at, but it is 9 minutes away from your tree. I hope we actually do get to meet up, but there's always other rides.lol

If this remains to be the forecast by Thursday night, I will be dropping out for Saturday, and might join Steve on Sunday. I think Ilona and Walt express the same thoughts about rain.
same here, I keep watching the forcast for here and there and hoping it will change, their after me at work to work Sunday and I've put them off till Thursday for an answer..wet leaves on those roads don't turn me on at all, guess I've just ridden to long to want to get wet just for the sake of a ride, theres always a sunny day coming and I can ride then..lets hope the weather takes a turn, wer'e really looking forward to this trip..they also get lake effect up there because of the water right next to them..come on mr. sun!!

Well WMUR shows possible rain on Sunday morning but a clear day after that. If the overnight becomes a wash, we can all get together early Sunday morning and make a day of it. We could even shoot for the 1st junction on 116. I might even let you follow me!

It's looking like the overnight is definitely going to be a washout. I agree with you that we could probably make a day of it on Sunday. Going your route to the meeting point at 116 and 17 is good (yes you can lead) and then we could follow the route I had set up for Sunday. (minus the lake islands of course) It still makes a good days ride with plenty of foliage. I think I saw a picture of a little restaurant on the stretch of 17 between the south junction of 116 and the north junction of 116. I'll try to get the name and post it. So, if everyone agrees.....we'll cancel the overnight and work towards a Sunday ride.

Actually Dan, I was kinda making fun for the Sunday ride to see if, after all the crap I got, you'd be willing to follow me.
Well, I'm not sure what's up for Sunday then. Liz is taking the kids to the Deerfield Fair Sunday. If the ride is cancelled I probably will run up there with her.
Let me follow this for another day. I'd have to get the word out to Carl and Joe S.

This should be the best week for it for sure. My next weekend off would be the 17th and 18th, but I think that would be late for the foliage. It's already changing drastically down here.

The overnight is definitely cancelled as is the hotel room we had reserved. So Saturday is definitely out of the running.
Rain is suppose to clear up on Sunday, so some of us are probably going to make a day ride through Vermont. Talking about going up the route Steve had to meet us, then swing around 17 to route 100 and do the remainder of my day 2 route, skipping the Burlington and Lake Champlain islands of course.
At this point I can't commit to my next weekend off since my folks have been planning a BBQ that weekend. So things will be up in the air depending on weather. All I can say is.......we'll have to play it by ear.

Dan, when I didn't get Saturday off, my tentitive game plan was to possibly go to the fair that day. Now that Saturday is a washout, that only leaves Sunday, the final day of the fair.
At this point, I now have Sunday and Monday off. If given the choice between riding on Sunday or the fair, I'm going to have to hit the fair with the family. It's tough sometimes to do things with the family, so that look like my game plan.
I will post something possibly for Monday. I know some people have posted an interest on a weekday ride and this might be a good option.
As to what course you might take, if you are going to morph my route to your return trip, you are going to have to get a fairly early start. I haven't looked at your end but mine was a 4 hour plus leg.

Oh I knew it was going to be a crash and burn today. Hotel rooms got cancelled yesterday. Sunday has possibilities, but it looks like the only ones that might be up for it are Elvie and I and possibly you Doc. Steve is taking the kids to the Deerfield Fair. Alright......here is the latest. Weather should be clearing up in the morning. I plan on meeting at DD at 9:00am only if other people are planning on going with Elvie and I. Otherwise, we are going to leave my house at 9:00am. If we do have people meeting at DD, we will leave there at 9:30 am. Again, from the looks of things, most people are not going on this ride. I've got another ambitious route planned because I want to include route 100 and route 4 as part of the trip. Here is the new map. It is about 300 miles. Once again life interveniens my riding plans, because im a nice guy and always willing to help out anybody... tomorrow I have to help a co-worker get his home furnace running. He started it up today due to the cold and guess what... lots of noise & smoke but no heat. Im not sure how long it will take but it looks like my participation in the ride will not happen. It's a bummer but these things happen, hopefully the Sun gods will be smiling for all that go. I will be there in spirit though:thumbup:, and if somehow a wrong turn is made just blame me for not being there.
There should be a nice weekend or two left for a good ride. Don't forget that next saturday is the NH grass drags, and sunday is the pumpkin boat races in damariscottia maine @ the harbor. Joe

I have no problem with the aggressive route I picked. Elvie really doesn't want to do an hour or so on any highway and you have a good stretch on 89. I figure I added about an hour from the original day 2 trip and I'm OK with that. Shaving an hour for the highway would keep Elvie from doing the ride. So, I think I'll stay with my plan. Let me know if you're still interested Doc.

4:30am and I'm just getting in from work. For whatever it's worth, the google stats for drive times aren't always accurate. I know that when we drove up to White River a couple of weeks ago, we were 30 to 45 minutes ahead of schedule.
I haven't looked at the route, but if you have some escape routes along the way to reduce the overall ride, you would have options.

I figured the escape route to be 89 at White River Junction. If we get tired or want to cut it short we can do 89 back to 93. But, Elvie really doesn't want to bang 60-70 miles on 89 at the beginning of the road trip and neither do I. As it stands, we are go for liftoff. Doesn't look like anyone wants to meet at DD on S. The last 60 miles or so really did me and Elvie in. But considering this was Elvie's longest ride EVER, she did great! I'm sure Doc and his stock seat must be doing well too. Nine hours even in the Mustang seat was still rough. We had lunch/ dinner around 3:00pm at some little general store in some little town whose name eludes me. Ken, she was crazy about it. Came outside and started talking with us and mentioned that the orange bike was the reason she came out. Then she said something about how "boring" black was. Poor Doc!!

From my house to my house, total miles over 350. Stock seat, what can I say. Felt like I drove from San Fransico to Provincetown and back with a few stops at some correctional facilities. :yikes:.
But seriously, the ride went smooth, we were cruising in the dark down 114 and then Dan and I parted ways. 2 miles later, I'm at a dead stop on the 293 bridge because of an accident on the middle of the Bridge. I'm 1/4 mile from Brown ave and it takes me another 20 minutes.
It was a good ride, rt 100 was good, I liked rt 4, too. Small world, at the Quechee gorge, I run into an old college friend from 20 years ago. Lunch was at Pittsfield, VT.
Oh, last and not least, Dan pulled a Steve. A little STEVE, but a STEVE none the less. And at the Quechee gorge while pushing his bike backwards up a slight hill, Dan's foot stepped on a rock and slipped and almost pulled an ENGLISH.

Geez......I thought owning the Steve maneuver was enough......you had to throw that "near English" maneuver as well. Thanks Doc!!
