Ok so I'm actually on like 650. Not riding as much as I'd wanted to this summer, but hey better late than never.
My question is - 600 means valve adjustment right? Anyone have any advice on where to go in the Cleveland area? And how much is reasonable? I bought it at Cleve/Akron Honda, but I"ve heard mixed things about them. I don't mind travelling a ways if it means talking to someone who knows his ***** and saving a bit of money... thanks for the help!
Ride safe!

The first service is scheduled at 4,000 miles see here http://www.ahm-ownerlink.com/Maintenanc ... i=4&box=ac (http://www.ahm-ownerlink.com/Maintenance/maint_schedule.asp?sch=n&mi=4&box=ac)
however, it is always a good idea to get the factory oil out of as there is always some metal particles floating around from the build. I changed my oil at 500 miles.
The valve adjustment is scheduled at 8,000 miles. The maintenance schedules are listed in your owners book. :)

Oh the stealer definitely told me 600 miles. That pretty much sums up their character then...
THANK YOU for the info!

TomVH,
I didnt touch my valves until over 10,000 miles. Had the dealer do it for around $90.00.
State 8 in Peninsula has done a great job for me and lots of others as well.
They are located off State Road. Easy to get too off Rt 303.
Phone # 330-929-8123
They also installed a new H2O pump on my 1800, 3 months after the warranty had expired and didnt charge me a penny.

The valves on the VTX do not need to be adjusted at 600 miles!! If the dealer told you that, find a new service location. My dealer told me upfront when I bought the VTX that it did not need an oil change -- according to Honda -- until 4,000 miles. But the dealer encouraged a 600 mile oil change. Check the service schedule in your owner's manual -- no valve adjustment at 600 miles.
WOW!, 600 miles all summer? I think I got that pushing mine in and out of the garage this season. :D That bike isn't even broken in yet and at the rate your going it'll take you 2 more years to do it.
I dumped the oil at 500 miles and also did the final drive the same day. I change oil and filter every 2500 - 3000 miles the same as my cars. I really don't care or trust what the manual says thats been a life long habbit and it's peace of mind and cheap insurance.

I paid around $200 for the oil change, complete inspection, and valve adjustments (as necessary)at the 600 mile mark. It's in the 2004VTX 1300C manual around page 63. I'm not enough of a motor head to do it myself, and I think it's worth the $ just to protect the investment. Good luck with your decision.

Tom,
Don't know if you had your service done yet, but here is some advice.
DO IT YOURSELF.
My little bro has an 03 1800C. We had just changed his oil and final drive lube to AMSOIL. He took his bike in for the 600mi service and ALL THEY DID WAS CHANGE THE OIL. You know, the brand new AMSOIL that we just put in    . No valve adjustment, no nothing else is reccommended or done at 600mi, according to the service manager.

There IS a recomended svc @ 600 mi. It includes a oil change and kind of a general over all inspection of the bike. Like are all the cables tight etc.. Just kind of a check up on the bike to ensure that eveything is like it should be. I took mine in and the dealer charged like $80.00.
From then on I change the oil every 3k and take the bike in for the recomended svc every 4k.
Hope this helps
Ron
Those dealers are blowing smoke up your bahooty if they say you need service at 600 miles. You can put 600 miles on it in a weekend and the things they are getting payed to check should have been done before you rode it out of there when you bought it. $80.00 is a bit out of line for an oil change when it would cost you $25 or $30 depending on where you bought your oil and filters.
At 600 miles it's good to change the break-in oil and dump the final as well but NO service is recomended in writing by the dealer. Checking everything else is your job every time you ride (or should be) as well as fluid levels, cables, tires, etc.
Don't get caught up in all this dealer service stuff unless you have $$$'s you don't need. They need a flow of $$ and this is exactly how they get it.
