You bet, I'm not much of a designer or I would have already done it. I know you have the talent Mark, whip one up for us.

I'll think on it, dude. I gotta get a vest soon, and I think it would be cool for us Utah guys to have our own patch, you know, with brine shrimp or mormon crickets on it - something reeeal tasteful!

I think having a Utah VTX Riders Patch is a GREAT idea! I'm not really an artist (well, my wife says I draw flies pretty good), but I have a couple ideas.

First, take a look at the VTX Riders patch at

http://www.vtxriders.com/photos/patch.jpg.

This is a BIG patch (9.35"x10.42") and runs about $50. The first question is do we want one this big?

Second, Dawg's Cycle Graphics has a patch that is not too bad. It is the "tribal" style, and could probably easily be adapted to a state patch. You'll find it at: http://tpbiker1.home.comcast.net/VTXtr5patch.htm.

Third, I'd be for making a patch with an outline of the state and then the VTX logo or something similar inside.

Those are just some ideas, and I'd love to see anything else that's out there. Has anyone spoken with the fellow in Ogden or another patch maker?

I contacted a couple custom patch makers online, and I'm waiting for some estimates. It looks like we need minimum numbers (between 20 and 50, depending on the maker) to place orders.

Okay, you found it for the big patch (www.vtxriders.com (http://www.vtxriders.com)). That's actually the one I like the most, and I think having "Utah" on top would be a good patch. Problem is one of "copyright" if we wanted to make an "all-in-one" patch. The other option is to simply make small "Utah" patches and then put then ontop of the bigger $50 patch.

As for the other site, try this URL instead:

http://tpbiker1.home.comcast.net/VTXtr5patch.htm

It's a much smaller patch, and is only $8.00 to begin with.

When a couple of these cutsom patch shops contact me I'm going to check into the possibility of combining elements from a couple of those patches. Maybe make something that's like the first one but with Utah at the top and VTX Riders at the bottom. I've got a friend who's pretty good with computer graphics, so I might send it over to him to see what he can do with it.

I have the VTX patch you show for 50.00 , it is nice but rather pricey, the place we are using to redo our patch is only going to charge us 20.00 for five colors, and it is a tad smaller. They do the artwork as well.

Sounds reeel good. I think we should be able to get enough guys interested to be able to make an order. I really like that $50 patch. Got another off the subject question for ya. I'm gonna order pipes in another week or so, and am wondering what you've heard down your way. Two buddies up here run V&H, and I like em a lot. Since I've heard them, that is probably the smart choice. Although I've not heard em, I'm leaning toward HK Kickers; ditto on the Sideburners - hear they sound great. Just want something sweet, loud.

I had Bassani 4-1 pipes on my 750 and they were awsome. If Bassani is going to make pipes for the VTX, I wish I had waited to order pipes. I think I'll be happy with my Roadhouse 2-1 pipes, however.

As far as a patch, I'll wait for you guys to decide on the design and then I'll get one for the back of my vest.

Wilson,

I have a sideburner you can take and try on your bike (assuming the C version will fit your R) if you want to see how it looks and sounds before you fork out the money. As long as I get it back in one peice, your welcome to borrow it for a while, its just sitting in my basement getting dusty.

For what its worth, when I was looking to buy my bike, it sat right next to another one that had VH bigshots. I started both of them up to compare. The Sideburner sounds quite a bit "nastier" than the Bigshots. Its the best SOUNDING pipe for the X that I have heard, but it is definatly the loudest. When you come off the throttle at speed, your X sounds just like a Semi with the Jake Brake on....

Every car I passed on the way home (when I took the bike home the first time) the driver allways looked over as I went passed... and they had their wiindows up.

Anyway If you want to borrow it for a test run.. lemme know.

The thing is guys they may sound good and all but what will that do for your power (torque). The X really likes back pressure to biuld up it's torque, so with out baffles or some kind of object to creat back pressure your torque will be decreased. The question should be, do I like the sound more than performance? just my .02

I contacted an online patch vendor (www.patches4less.com (http://www.patches4less.com)) to see what they could do. They quoted a price of around $ 6.78 a piece, but that's buying in bulk of 50. If we go 100 then it drops to $ 3.57 each, and then a bit more as we go higher. Not sure if we can get 50 much less 100, but I thought I'd put both numbers out there.

Here's a copy of what they ran for me as a sample. I gave them some websites, some descriptions, and this is what they came up with. We can change colors, etc., and I think we can move the Utah to the area actually on top (I told them on top, but they thought I meant on top of VTX).

http://www.cloud.edu/dept/crimjust/onlinepatch.jpg

I also have a friend who teaches graphics/computer arts at Kansas State University. He's an old Honda rider as well, so I've asked him to give me some ideas. He said he might have another buddy who's willing to do the work for us, so he'll check on that. I'll post his art as soon as I get it, but it will more likely be after the 17th or a bit later.

I sure like the idea of $6.78 each vs. $50. Even if we don't sell all 50 patches, we're sure to get a price below $50 per patch. I'm interested in seeing what your graphic designer friend comes up with.

The chrome is messed up on the headers. I dont think you would want them. Thats one of 3 reasons I took them off the bike. I might look into having it re-chromed, but the thing is is that on this pipe, the heat shield is WELDED on.

So I have to have it cut off, re-chromed, and welded back on, without screwing up the new chrome. I may try it one day, if I can get it done cheap enough.

But like I said, you can borrow it if you want to try it out.

If we could get people to buy 50 at 6.78 I don't see why not 100 at 3.57. If people would add just 36 cents to each patch they order they would double the patchs they would receive.

3.57 * 2 = 7.14 - 6.78 = 0.36

(if you order 2 @ 6.78 = 13.56)
(if you order 4 @ 3.57 = 14.28 just 72 cents more)

Hey, my name is Derren I live in Park City and ride a 03' VTX 1800 R (Candy Orange) , I met Lewis (drywallman) at Big O Tires in the early fall. He mentioned this site to me and I'm just now getting around to checking it out.

I was Summit Honda's first customer! I bought my VTX a month before they opened. Burke is the best!

I'm always looking for someone to go riding with who knows what a real bike is.

Anyway, I'm looking foward to meeting and riding with some of you guys!

First big ride of the year in the Spring is usually the Polar Bear Ride, put on by the Salt Lake Motorcycle Club. Scheduled for Sunday March 13, 2005, leaving from Harley Davidson of Salt Lake 2929 So. State, sign up starts at 9:00 AM, ride starts at 10:30 AM.

Maybe us VTXers could meet someplace before hand, Honda of Salt Lake right off I-80 and State Street is always a good place. :)

I'm game for any ride, if we can get into the 50s.

By my count it looks like we might be pretty close to hitting the magic numbers of 50 and 100 for the patches. So, let's get serious. Here's what I suggest.

If you'd like to order the patch that was previously posted (URL below) then we need to coordinate the sale. I don't mind doing that, but I'll need to get some assurance that you'll pay when the patch comes in. The easiest way might simply be for me to order the patches -- with the understanding that you guys will pay when I get them -- and then use my PayPal account (it will accept credit cards) to recover my cost.

If you've not seen the patch yet then try this URL:

http://www.cloud.edu/dept/crimjust/onlinepatch.jpg

As noted, the patch is 5.7" x 5.3", so be sure to get out your tape measure and make sure this is what you want. By my calculations the Utah part of the patch will be about 3/8 to 1/2 inch high. Before I order I just want to make sure everyone knows what they're getting into.

If we do this then there are no returns. In other words, I'm not going to pay for the whole thing and thet get stuck for it because someone decides later they just don't like the design.

The cost will depend on the ultimate number of folks who commit to the patches. So, please send me an email to my private addy (cfranklin@infowest.com) to let me know the following:

1. How many patches do you want? NOTE: The more we each individually commit to the lower the price will be on a per patch basis. See earlier discussion for the economics of this deal.

2. How will you pay? NOTE: My preference would be that you run over to PayPal and put a little token bit down (say about 1/2 of the cost you expect) so I minimize the chance of getting ripped on this deal. I'm not paranoid, just experienced.

3. How do I contact you (email, phone, etc.) when the patches come in?

That should do it for now.

doc_cj
12-24-2004, 04:16 PM
I've received a couple questions via Email, and rather than answer them each individually I thought I'd just post a FAQ.

1. Why are you the one collecting money?

Answer: I don't have to be, but I thought someone needed to step up and do it. I found the patch, posted it, and just figured I'd volunteer. Anyone else is welcome to take over.

2. Do we have to have blue?

Answer: The company will produce the patch using whatever colors we would like. Personally, I'd like to see a darker blue, since I have a Blurple VTX, or maybe a red. The light blue was their design, but we can change the thread color pretty easily.

3. Can we buy fewer than 2?

Answer: The company will not make fewer than 50 patches at a time. So, we can buy between 1 and 50 each, so long as we buy them in lots of 50. As also discussed, if we buy 100, 200, etc. then the price per patch goes down a bit. But the minimum is a lot of 50.

4. What if we don't get to 50?

Answer: A couple ideas have come to mind. We can simply take the number of orders we have and then set the price on a per person basis. In other words, if only 10 folks are interested then we'd split the price between us. Each would then get their prorated share of the total number patches. At worst we'd each pay 1/5th of the price and get 1/5th of the patches. The more people -- or the more patches individuals are willing to buy -- the more reasonable the price division.

5. Are there cheaper patch places?

Answer: Not that I've found so far.

6. What is PayPal and how do I use it?

Answer: PayPal (www.paypal.com (http://www.paypal.com)) is owned by EBay, which is a large online auction company. PayPal has two ways to send and receive money. The first is to open a free account where you can deposit funds to the PayPal system. You can deposit using a credit card or your own checking account, and the money stays in your account until you tell them where to send it.

You can also receive money using PayPal. By opening an account you can receive money from other PayPal users. That way Grandma can deposit $50 to her account and send it to you for the that new VTX Logo doohickie you want so bad.

You can also use PayPal with a credit card and never open an account. All you need is the email address of the person you are sending money to, and if they have a PayPal account then they'll get your payment.

Okay, that's it for now, any more questions -- or to place an order -- send an email to me at: cfranklin@infowest.com. By the way, that's also my addy for the PayPal system, so feel free to send me all the money you want. :o

I'm guessin the patch idea has died a slow death. I can't see that we'd be able to buy 50 patches between everyone that's posted, and I've only had 2 people actually write to me to say there were ready to order.

So .... unless someone comes up with a better plan ... or we actually collect enough $$ to order 50 patches, I'm gonna take this thread off my watch list.
