May have been the problem, but I don't think so. I think my impact gun isn't quite strong enough to get the nut off the spindal gear. May I'll have to take it to Reds and see if he can help me out.

Hey Lewis, can ya help me understand why you're doing what your doing?

I don't like trying to find 6th gear going down the freeway. I also want to get better gas milage.

By the way, I have finished the install about 5 minutes or so ago and took it around the block to check it out. It does feel like I don't have to shift as much so far.

Tomorrow I will take it out and really doing some intense testing. Fuel Milage, RPM vs Speedo read out and such.

You're telling me the 1300 is geared higher than the 1800? That would surprise me. Do you have more or less teeth 1300 versus the 1800? If more teeth (bigger), your gearing will be lower not higher, thus more RPMs in 5th.

Rear tire is a little smaller on the 1300, so perhaps they did make the 1300 rear end smaller.

already went for test ride, 4th gear is almost the same as 5th gear on the stock 1800 gear set. So far I like it. More testing to come....

Are you setting it up with the right backlash and mesh????

Have had mine in for a few months now and love it!!

I used the same shims that came off my other gears. I talked with another guy that did the same mod. Back lash was hardly at all and the mesh appeared as if it was center.

I did notice that the pinion gear set in a little different then the 1800 gear. It would have been a smooth operation if I had the right tools to begin with.

Needed a bearing puller for the three piece bearing on the pinion gear.
A hair dryer to heat up the housing to pull out the pinion gear.
A good air impacked gun to take off the pinion nut. The one I have is not very good.
And a Vise to hold the final drive housing.

The whole process should only take about 2.5 to 3 hours to complete.

WOW! Real hard for me to believe that the same shims would work twice in a row, for you, and the other guy!! If the mesh just seems close enough is not good enough!!! And the backlash has to be in tolerance or when that rear end gets warmed up and hot, it is not going to last very long?????
If all those houseings were machined to such close tolerances then Honda would have machined them to where you would not need any shims at all!!!!!
Good luck!

Lee: You have the 1300 rear end in your 1800?

Lower? Higher? Better? Comparison?

Thanks

Yep and I love it. Especially on long trips, 500rpm less while cruising and just feels RIGHT! Quarter mile times are even a little better as you have a little more time to shift to second, and forth gear pretty well gets you thru the quarter.
I think if you went lower gears then you could forget first gear and use 2nd,3rd,4th, &5th.

Uses a little more fuel because engine is sensing more load, so goes to a little richer mixture, but by kicking the low and mid range buttons one light leaner on long trips you get your mileage back, but a little decel popping comes back.

The speedo is off 10% slower than before. So at 60 MPH I was Acutally going 66 MPH, RPM around 2500.

Thus what drywallman and Lee are saying, it is smaller, thus higher gear ratio and lower RPM in 5th. Interesting.

Personally, my bike just seems to puurrrrrr and smooth as silk at 75 MPH in 5th. Don't have a tach, but I'd guess running around 3k rpm.
