Anyone here bought a bike from HDL in Ohio?
I was wondering what the proceedure is going to be with the commisars :x from the state as far as registering and paying sales tax on a new bike from HDL.
With the way the sales taxes are going up around here I'm looking more and more at the idea of going out of state to buy.
9.25% in Erie county now.
It's a shame that the indians don't sell vehicals tax free on the reservations the way they do gas and tobaco.
Thanks for any input.

Research this as much as possible - I got screwed in Massachusetts - they charged me the tax on Book Value instead of actual cost. They stated that because HDL is not a registered dealer in Mass that they default to the book value - well there went the accessory money into the State coffers cost me $350 extra dollars that I could have used for goodies on the bike.

Someone told me that they bought a bike out of state - went and got a registration in Ohio and then sold the bike on paper to a relative - the relative then can sign the owernship back over to you and then you register it as having been purchased from a private party - not sure of the legality and such - but if it saves you from paying all that extra tax on a sale price that you did not pay (Book Value vs. Actual Price Paid) then it works for me!

Both Smack and I went out to Wilburs together to pick up our bikes during the sale.

I'll say it again that you got screwed in Mass.

In NY you provide you cert. of origin and bill of sale and pay your State or City tax and a DMV licece plate charge/registration fee...you may also have to pay pay a $10 fee for the title but I can't remeber.

I bougt my 02 from a dealer in North Carolina. What you need is an original bill of sale with the purchase price on it; a photocopy or fax will not do. That plus the DMV casual sale form DTF-802 (front side only) and you will end up paying NY tax on the price you paid HDL not the book value.

So that means you pay Ohio tax also, than again in NY?

no

you pay only 1 state

if you pay in Ohio you provide proof and NY will get it.

if you pay in Ny then you are done

My experience with out-of-state vehicle purchasing was buying my VTX in Alabama while I lived in Florida. I paid no taxes in AL. I paid sales tax in Florida on the actual purchase price. I had to give the MVB a copy of the purchase contract. This seemed very simple. Each state must have its own rules, butg there is no way that you pay in two states. Sorry to hear about the bum experience in Mass.

wonder if you had a mailing address in Ohio, you could claimyou paid for ht ebast in ohio and moved out here and broguht your bike with yu. No tax required. Did it on a 57000 sailboat quite successfully. Scott

I hadn't really thought of that as I was trying to be above board.
Now that you mention it though I have a sister in Chagrin Falls that might be able to help.
Although I wouldn't get much riding in if I get busted.

as long as you have the original factory bill of sale that you sign at the dealer, you pay the sales tax when you register the bike at home.don't let a salesman try and tell you you have to pay him sales tax too.and you should use your legal address the dmv will look you up in the computer for correct addresses and anything else you have registered, unless you have your sister put it in her name, but then don't piss her off because she will legally own the bike.

I bought an 03 1800c from a Florida dealer. I had to pay Florida sales taxe (6% I think) on my actual cost of the bike. They sent me a certificate of tax payment for that amount. Then there is a form the DMV provides (actually I printed it from the the DMV web site, or you can pick it up at the DMV...if you can find one that is still open in Erie County), you plug in the numbers and have to pay the difference between the out-of-state tax actually paid and what the in-state tax would be. Basically the total tax you should end up paying is what the tax would be for the purchase price is you bought the bike in NY....sounds like the buyer from Mass. got seriously screwed.

Thanks for all the info and tips everyone.

It looks more like I'll be looking other than around here to buy.

I heard about a dealer down by Cooperstown that has some pretty good prices and some 04s left. I want to check him out.

Otherwise it looks like out of state it will be.

Hey all,
I just wanted to say again Thanks for the help.
Today I bought a 2004 1300S VTX from the shop near Cooperstown.
They gave me a very good price and a pretty good deal on accessories. They even gave me a better deal on installing the things that I got for Christmas.
Now I have to get it home after the rest of the paperwork is done.
I look forward to riding with all of you.
By the way the name of the shop is Bennett Motor Sales, (607) 547-9332.
They still have one or two Retros and one C left.
