Here is the current project and its progress: The idea was to put a fully operational High Speed Internet capable PC on a Bike...WHY?
1.) MOBILE GPS (on a screen that you can actually SEE)
2.) MP3's (gotta ride wit da TUNES!! Music will be heard through the mounted Speakers attached to the Hondaline windshield brackets shown in the pics).
3.) VOIP TELEPHONE CALLS (HANDS FREE!) & Played / heard over your Cars built in STEREO system!!! (or in MY case my BIKE's speakers!)
4.) LIVE Weather&Traffic reports
5.) LIVE INTERNET radio
6.) Online PCIII map changes while riding
7.) Emails from anywhere
8.) Remote access to Corp. Network via VPN for remote control of PC's/ Servers
9.) VOICE CONTROL over most of the functions
10.) BECAUSE IT'S FREAKING COOOOOL!!! 8)
11.) CamCorder recording onto the Hard disk then transmitted via internet to FTP server
12.) You can use this system to mount a Webcam to the back of your Vehicle so you can SEE LIVE what you are about to back into while reversing!
13.) Parents, you can keep track of your Teenager's whereabouts by checking the LOGS (shows WHERE they been, How long, and how FAST they were going!!! )
This system is truly MOBILE and can be transported from your BIKE to your CAR/RV/SKIMOBILE/SEMI-TRUCK etc in less than 7 minutes via quick-release modular system.
Here are some pics:

http://bigbikeriders.com/photopost/data/3646/2491PilotsViewControls.jpg
The SPEAKERS will allow for a HANDS FREE phone call to be received..and YES I CAN hear them at 80mph 8) the throat-mic allows minimal noise too!

The brackets are all One-Offs made by a friend who is an EXCELLENT craftsman and are made from Stainless (polished)
I used VISCO ELASTIC foam (which works like a charm!) for harmonic Shock absorption and will use the oil filled SHOCKS off a gas powered RC truck for major absorption.
All this equipment is Touch control if needed but more importantly VOICE CONTROLLED using a THROAT mic. I will be testing this over this weekend. Got da tunes baby (15GB worth) and GPS using voice (it even talks BACK ROFL)
Wireless internet at 1.2MBPS working great with the VPN (128bit 3DES encrypted tunnel)
Uses total 68watts power 8)
Ill be taking my Camcorder and mounting that in the bags and using a remote WideAngle remote CCD with push button Start/Stop record control to record the Coloradical trip. :D
I may be offering "KITS" if anyone is interested. I have to work out the price points yet though. This Kit is transportable into a CAR/SUV/ATV/Snowmobile etc. and mayl be marketed on my registered domain site www.WindowsOnWheels.com (http://www.WindowsOnWheels.com) depending on legalities and such. (That is unless of course HAL wants some of this :D )
The BAGS are the TSUKAYU bags fresh from being Painted Illusion Blue.

Since it has to be explained to you "when life hands you LEMONS you make LEMONADE" it means you make the BEST of every possible situation. I am a Network Operations manager and I love what I do...thats what makes me GOOD at it. However I can't just "ride to get away from all that crap" so I made it easier for me to do what I have to do. I am not the only one in this world that needs to be connected (even when on vacation...) so this is a solution to that problem...how do you get or stay connected on a BIKE?
Truckers/Limo drivers/Geeks/people who LIKE technology and understand it and appreciate it would be interested in this kind of stuff. People who DONT like it usually dont understand it either WONT be interested....two kinds of people...

jdchgo and it sounds like wooley55 may be interested…
jdchgo, like what ya did! I appreciate all the work it takes to do that sort of project. You may not know about this website http://www.mp3car.com. There are a ton of ideas as to making a puter’s work in a 12-volt environment. They have several mini-ITX cases with 60-watt power supplies. They also have information about DC to DC power supplies, auto shutdowns so it will power down after you turn the key off, delayed shutdown timers, low voltage shutdown control, no reboot during engine starting and cranking, utilizing shutdown, standby, and hibernate modes so you can go right back to where you were when you get ready to head out again, information on case vibration, OBDII adapters, etc… Hope you can use the information. I think it’s a great source.
I have a puter that is in my Grand Vitara; ShuttleX SN41G2, AMD 3200+ Barton, PC2700-512, 200 gig Maxtor HD (plenty of room for MP3’s, e-Books, video’s, and games), Opus SFX-1215 (a 12-volt power supply), 108Mbps WIFI, DVD+/-R+/-RW 4x40x24x40, 7" Lilliput Touch Screen, 15” Viewsonic ViewPanel VP150m (built-in speakers), BU-303 GPS, voice activation, wireless keyboard and mouse. Street Atlas 2004, Media Engine,…
You stated you have “Wireless internet at 1.2MBPS working great with the VPN (128bit 3DES encrypted tunnel)”. Can you give me some info as to cost and how you’re doing it? I currently am using the local hotspots for WIFI. It’s been quite awhile since I was active at the MP3car.com site but I imagine the cost has come down for a higher bandwidth connection.
When I go to Sturgis, I will transplant it over to the pop-up camper trailer, behind the bike, so I will have access to the emails, net, and other toys. It’s always nice to be able to watch a DVD or two while camping. I have one of those 1/3” CCD 480 lines of resolution cams and I will feed it thru my Panasonic DV camera then to the puter so I can do some long recordings. I haven’t experimented enough to decide what focal length I need yet. Only have the 3.6 lens as of now. I am working on setting up a couple of deep cycle batteries, in the trailer to supply enough power.
Have fun and keep us tuned in as to changes and all.

WOW that is quite a setup you have there. Also GREAT information you supplied. Thanks bruddah...I will probably be buying a few things soon from there.
I use Verizon wireless internet service currently. Our Corporate office is footing the bill at $68.00 per month for unlimited access. Right now you only get broadband speeds in MAJOR cities...Chicago, LA, NY etc. But the speed is still respectable in the boonies...like 128K or more...depends. VZAccess is what they call it.
Thanks for the info Cruzr. :D

You've got one of the rare applications where I'd consider adding a solar panel. You can have that charging the batteries while going down the road or while away from the trailer. It won't provide 100% of the power you want, most likely, but it will seriously extend the charges.

I will also be mounting a 1/3" CCD remote "EYE" cam to my Sony DVR-TRV820 DV cam and be recording to 8mm tape then converting the tapes via on-board PC to MPEG format then FTPing it up VIA Wireless 1.2MBPS to a server. This can all be done while riding and not touching the screen (keeping your eyes on the road an NOT on the screen for safety reasons) I will create a batch file that will take file drops in a directory converting them and auto-FTPing them up. A program called WinBatch will allow scripting to do this.

Highplainsxer,
NOT such a great accomplishment...I got it all to work but now look at the power budget...This bike WILL DIE at the rate of discharge using 95% of capacity of the charging system. I WILL need to rewind the alternator after all even AFTER putting all LED's and tweaking all the power I could get. Also I will need to replace the stock battery with the 26AH deep cycle battery. Cost=$500.00 to do this in addition to all the power mods made to get it this far. DANG this bike is a WIMP when it comes to making ELECTRICAL power bwaaa... :x but I want what I want so here we go...
http://bigbikeriders.com/photopost/data/3646/2491VTXPwrBudget.jpg
If I rewind the Alternator I get 500W@5000RPM's which would drop the consumption to 76.2% of capacity@5000rpm just barely making it. This application is BEST for a CAR...but will work on a bike/Atv/Snowmobile if their power range is close to the X's. The bike will make a total of 36.23A and Ill be using 27.62 (which is 76.2%) if all accessories were turned ON.
Kudos to iCe for making up the Excel sheet for the POWER BUDGET! I could not have done these calcs w/out it. He did a lot of work to get the numbers. :D
BTW...I DONT plan on getting and reading Emails while riding just using the GPS/PCIII/MP3's but CAN get emails while parked or fueling up. VPN access is a MUST for me and is now possible.

Adam,
This system WILL work in a garage....on just about ANY PC...that's the beauty of it. It does however require Windows XP and I would recommend SP2 for the firewall. This will work in a 12v environment or plugged into the wall at 110v. 8)
I am NOT creating something new in the sense that this technology doesn't exist and I am creating it new...I am just putting together existing technologies marrying them together and making them a "package". Some of this stuff is prototype (concept) like the Microphone and the brackets but I will refine it...cheapen it...and get it so that it becomes better over time. I am not ready to market it yet...this setup is proof of concept at this point. Also I am trying to see if there is any interest in it.

Here's a thought to get you an additional 25watts of power: Switch over to a HID headlight. Mine only draws something in the neighborhood of 35watts. www.xenondepot.com (http://www.xenondepot.com) for more info on that.
While this isn't my cup of tea, I think this is cool as hell that someone's putting this much time and effort into a technical challenge. It's my thought that you're probably just doing this as much to see if it CAN be done as for practical application. Obviously, it's not going to be the most practical thing in the world, but I applaud you for putting your brain to work and figuring this thing out rather than just setting around watching reruns of OCC. Let the other guys bash ya all they want....it's not like a 240 rear tire or more chrome doo dads are any MORE practical than this is.

But anyway I just wanted to let you know I appreciate your ingenuity. I've done some off the wall custom stuff to bikes as well and everything is not for everybody, but one thing I realize its the guys/gals that push the envelope that have gotten us this far technologically.... Farmguy,
NO mouse necessary its a touch screen...but even that is not necessary...its controlled by your VOICE using a military style THROAT microphone. The throat mic uses vibrations and NOT sound to conduct the signals...since there would be a LOT of sound from the exhaust and the wind. So far it has been GREAT...but of course this system has it's own set of problems (bugs) that need to be worked out. For instance, how to get the whole system to standby or hibernate when power is cut off from it...and how to RESUME when you start the bike...etc...that is a tricky thing to do. As it is now the system runs but I must shut it down when I power off the bike using the voice command "shutdown". Then I must open the hardbag...start up the laptop...then re-insert the laptop to it's carrier and close the bag...this takes about 4-5min....WAY to long if Im just stopping for gas. But, Ill figure it out...by the time it goes to market.

Dezzy7,
As most projects this was a HELL of a lot of work and much more than expected...lol but the fruits are starting to show up now 8) . To make it WORK was one thing...to make it work and not KILL my bike quite another...and then to tweak it to the "SWEET" spot where you can show it off...well that's where me an BILL GATES are similar...ROFL blue screen on first rollout! But I think this product will be commonplace in the very near future...(not necessarily by me...) A lot of the new concept cars will come standard with something similar...but not quite as flashy of course!
JD
jd, here's what i WILL say: you should make that bad boy software/hardware available for use without the bike (meaning not mounted to the bike) -- it would be a SUPER boon in the garage.....
GPS for garage use? I envy your garage space. Anyway, if you're looking for something off the bike, just grab any laptop or if you want to get fancy a ruggedized tabletpc. The only tricky bit is integrating everything with a bike (which is kind of like saying 'the only tricky bit about rockets is getting them to not blow up'). Everything else is trivial to setup at home with an 802.11 flavor for network access.
jdchgo, a very sweet setup. Looking at the power chart it looks like audio is eating up a significant part of the budget. Perhaps some sort of an in-helmet earphone system would work? How are you controlling the PCIII? Are you running a USB cable or do you have some sort of a USB-wireless dongle?
While this isn't really for me, the idea is most excellent for those folks who want or need to stay in touch 7/24 while on the road.
jdchgo
03-30-2005, 02:23 AM
OR,
I am using the supplied USB with the PCIII and can change maps on the fly! And you are right anyone can setup their garage for a PC...thats childs play...but getting this to work on a BIKE via VOICE was a bit of a challenge...mostly the electrical wiring and the budget...the PC part and the VPN networking was brainless :D Now the next challenge is to get the POWER options to LIKE it when power is jerked from it without freaking out the outboard LED screen and resuming after a shutdown. Sounds easy but it is more difficult than I thought cause you must CLOSE the laptop and make it still run...then from the touchpad/Voice control send it into standby or hibernate..then BRING IT BACK via the voice or touchpad! Not so easy lol..without having to go into the stinking bags to open the laptop stike any key to get it to WAKE UP!

I'd consider using a Micro ATX desktop board with a modified saddle bag or trunk as the case. Then just put an external power/reset switch on it. that would eliminate the PITA of trying to get hybernate to restart when you have the throat mike down.
The trunk system may work out better than a saddlebag as you could work it out to mount to a saddle bag, or even another trunk with bungie cords.
BTW: How is cooling working out for you?
Seabear70
03-30-2005, 10:34 AM
Actually, another option might be to rig up a touch sensitive strip and wire that to the usb and convince the computer that that is a mouse. I believe you can rig the computer to wake on mouse.
Seabear70
03-30-2005, 10:36 AM
BTW: now you have to rig it with a Heads up Display, so as not to clutter the bars.
jdchgo
03-30-2005, 01:51 PM
Both are good ideas...the trunk as a case AND touch strip/pad as a mouse...I have already looked into a HUD using the shield as a projection area but guess what...the stinking projector needed to do that is to dang expensive.

Well,
Took the WOW (WindowsOnWheels) equipment out on her maiden voyage with the THROAT mic. After testing 5 different prototype microphones and one regular one I settled on the only one that actually WORKED (a simple $19.99 throat mic works and the Expensive $50-80.00 mics wouldn't...go figure!). After extensive "programming" in a LOUD environment with fans blowing and music playing I managed to create a profile that is extremely hostile to microphone noise cancellation technology.
Then I put it on the bike and when the engine roared to life along with the tunes cranked up it actually WORKED!! :D :D :D Most of the kinks worked out now and voice control complete. The system is SOLID!!
I can do all of the following using VOICE Commands while riding:
1.) Change PCIII map files on the fly and monitor RPM etc.
2.) ZOOM in/out Pan left/right/up/down on the GPS and create routes.
3.) Choose playlists and advance songs.
4.) Turn the volume up/down.
(The following can also be done but not advised while riding!!)
5.) Open the Internet Explorer and surf.
6.) Send/Receive Emails (although I would not read them while riding LOL).
7.) Remote control of Corporate servers over VPN (using wireless Internet at 158k-1.3MBPS) works well.
On-board 6Amp charger will charge the battery in 4hrs from a dead state. So power is not a problem so far...
So the last hurdle is how to make the PC standby or Hibernate and then COME BACK either using a KB command or a USB Mouse touch pad without having to OPEN the hardbags.
8) 8) 8)
This system I call WindowsOnWheels is so portable that it is possible to take it off the bike and mount it into a CAR/TRUCK/SUV/SEMI in less than 5minutes. It will BECOME your mobile platform for all you vehicles, and it works even BETTER in them because NOISE is not a problem and power isn't either!

"Jd",
Been following your project and I must say you have done some good work! A few questions and comments:
1: Water resistant properties for the main screen?
2: Power consumption for other PC's versus your prototype?
In your quest to sell, many potential customers (me for one) would "pay more for less", meaning smaller perhaps even tank bag mounting with quick d/c for on the road hotel stops. Security you know... Just an idea.
As for the shutdown, I recall seeing various programs that simply detect the switch from "ac" to bat. If I can find them I'll send them your way.
Best of luck,
Russ

RRay,
Thanks for the kind words!
As far as waterproofing the main screen...the One-off SS enclosure for the prototype is completely sealed except on the front (open for access to the TouchPanel). I will make a Plexiglass or Lexan panel that will be mountd to the face to keep it dry...I also plan to make the Enclosure (phase II) completly out of LEXAN plastic as an option (to keep the weight down...also the cost...) and that one will have a completely sealed removable door that can be attached in an instant should it start raining. The prototype for that is being produced now.
As far as options on the PC:
My prototype is a Toshiba run-of-the-mill 10.5" screen that uses 60Watts continous plus the external TouchPanel at 8Watts=68Watts.
The computers below are WAY more polite on the power consumption:
I work for Toshiba and the LIBRETTO L5 would work awesomely but the cost is over $1500.00usd.
Another option is here:
http://www.oqo.com
This PC would not be able to connect to the internet because of lack of PCMCIA slot (hmmm...I wonder of USB could supply an interface for a PC Card slot....). Anyways those are only TWO options on the PC side...almost ANY pc would work as long as it is up around 1GHZ speed or greater. Ill keep posting on this thread as progress is made.
As far as Shutdown/Standby/Hibernate I can do those using VOICE commands...the problem is WAKING IT UP! That is not so easy. I am developing a program that is triggered by mouse movement currently
and because I am not an expert at VB it's taking some time.
Here is an article dealing with the subject:
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;266283
This link also provides clues..but doesnt work because the BIOS doesn't support it (at least on THIS model of Toshiba laptop I have...)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=280108
Any ideas on WAKE UP would be appreciated.

Very inovative!! Can see a lot of good advantages to some of the features with the computer that you mentioned. I, however, spend 8+ hours a day staring at a computer, so I probably would not want to look at another computer while I'm riding my motorcycle. Riding my bike would be sort of an escape from computers. lol. I can see where there will be some people that would be interested in your idea. But still very creative!! Nice work.

PPP111,
Thanks for compliment, I too am in front of computers EVERYDAY...(Im starting to glow in the dark and it seems like no matter HOW fast they make em...I still spend my life waiting for them!) Since I am a Network Operations Manager...I am On-Call 24X7 even while on vacation...so...I developed a way to be able to still keep in touch while on the road...even on a BIKE! This suite of products and technology will allow the entire system to be moved from Bike to Car to Semi to ATV...etc because of its mobility.
Of course Cars...(any kind of cage) will work with this system best because they are QUIET! The challenge was to get this to work on a Bike which we all know is LOUD.
So far so good...next I will be hanging a Sony Digital High 8 camcorder with remote CCD/mic for recording the Coloradical trip...Grand Canyon, Devil's Tower, Mt. Rushmore...etc. The equipment should be installed by end of next month and testing will begin then.
Stay tuned to this thread if interested, as I will post new developments as they occur.

I know what you mean by HEAT getting the best of a laptop. We just got rid of 15 Toshiba 6100 series laptops that had thermal problems having to do with VIDEO.
So, to keep the laptop COOL in the hardbags (which are water tight and almost air tight...)

I purchased this USB FAN that will evacuate the hot air through a vent (that I will cut into the side of the bags). I got them from EBAY for under $10.00 delivered. Bestbuy has a USB LED light that they want $35.00 for ROFL! It's just a LED LIGHT with no FAN!! This one is interchangeable!

Up until recently IBM didn't make a laptop with a display that was capable of 1280 x 1024 screen resolution without overscan. That was our saving grace. I have to have that. Dell does. Now IBM has dropped the serial port (which I need). Dell still has a serial port. My laptop lives in a hazardous world :) Sometimes we have to flip them over and tap them on the table to clear the debris from under the keyboard (no kidding).. My Dell is almost three years old and the only problems that I have are when a script runs (from IT via the network)...
When something goes wrong with our PC's the IT people replace them. We have a little saying... If you're printer runs out of ink, the IT boys will replace your laptop. The other day, a script ran and knocked out Lotus Notes. They are getting ready for a new load. Guess what? I'm getting a new IBM PC... I don't need it. All I need is the latest version of Notes. We'll see if the IBM can hang. So far their desktops have been disappointing...

What you are looking for is already being made...some phones will react to a PTT switch and have an earbud that is a MIC/Speaker that will allow you to do what you want...speak to access VM or make a call. WOW! Thats a lot of work! I'm a techno geek too, to some extent. I'm also a systems admin for a fortune 500 company's NOC. I can appreciate the time it took to marry all the different technologies together, and from a techno geek perspective.. thats really freakin cool!
Like others have said, I ride to get away from everything possible, my personal opinions are something like;
If you can't fit it in your pocket, you don't need it.
If you don't have bugs in your teeth and road grime on your face, you didn't ride.
If it doesn't make it go faster, stop faster, or make it louder it doesn't belong on a bike.
I'm also in the same position as you are, where my company requires me to be available 24X7. Here is the way I got my arms around that requirement without having to got to the lengths you have....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v17/tat2skullz/VTX/SysMgmtAximsmall.jpg
I use the Axim to connect via bluetooth to my cingular phone. I can use either the GSM or GPRS network and achieve some decent speeds. I use a Nortel VPN client to connect to work. I can them use terminal services to connect to any client, or to my IP KVM, or Serial over IP, and soon an IPMI client.
Most of the systems I have direct responsibility for (32TB SAN, Backup, etc) have automated alerts that send an SMS message directly to my phone for any warning or critical event, so I'm aware of it even befor the operations personnel have had a chance to begin to diag it.
Granted, I don't have the GPS functionality, MP3, etc, but I do have an iPod and a pocket GPS if I think I need it. I can tell you I will NEVER have the desire to listen to music when I'm riding.. but then again, thats IMHO.
Anyways, very good work and a neat idea! I'm sure some others will find this type of solution attractive.. But I figured I'd post my solution for those who feel more like I do.

How do you like your X50? I've had mine for a couple of weeks. So far, I've had some problems with motel wireless and Delorme mapping is not what I thought that it would be (but it works)

I bought the X50v with the VGA video so I could do real time reporting in meetings, etc.. as well as the presentation software and cable to hook it up to a projector.
The wireless tends to drain the battery pretty fast, I think. but I haven't had any problems with it. It works with the odysey (sp?) client for WPA networks. I don't use any mapping software with it, so I can't comment on it.

Tat2Skullz,
I agree with you that putting this technology on a BIKE is EXTREME. But since I am planning on riding in the Coloradical I came up with HOW to put my laptop to use during the ride. This idea is BEST suited for a Cage no doubt but I am not riding my CAGE to Colorado.
I have a Friend who is a Car Dealer and he LOVES the idea of being able to offer this product as an Option on some of his USED vehicles. Starting in 2006 you will be seeing LOTS more cages with the built in GPS systems but they are not FULL BLOWN PC's with all the functionalities of this system.
I can disconnect this system and reconnect to my cage in less than 5mins. Which means I dont have to buy more than one. It's also SCALEABLE so that if you already have a laptop you can use that to make this system...(as long as it is AT compatible...havent worked on the MAC/LINUX platforms yet...) It would be IDEAL for truckers/taxis/Limo drivers too! The possibilities are endless...so I am off to market with this product!!! 8) :D
The only problem I have with the way you are staying connected is that I would not be able to SEE the little screens while driving! (I'm getting old and I cant even really SEE my cell phone) and dont want to take my EYES off the road long enough to do so. Thats why I developed a way to do everything by VOICE CONTROL....no touching!! I have a VOIP SOFTPHONE on the laptop so I can activate it by voice to answer a phone call or make a call.
I also use the Nortel VPN client to connect and use DAMEWARE to remote control the entire enterprise instead of a Terminal Server...I like that better myself :D (to each his own eh?)
Thanks for the kind words...it takes some knowledge of this technology to know how much effort went into developing it.

I know what you mean, about te little screens, but I wouldn't want to try a con call, while managing my SAN, and paying attention to the road  .
I've used DAMEWARE, but it is way to vulnerable for my tastes.
BTW, I have the AVAYA softphone on both my laptop and on teh Axim... it works awesome. The ONLY issue I have on the AXIM really has more to do with cingular, than anythnig else. If I'm not using a GPRS connection, the latency on a GSM connection can cause the VOIP to drop. But, in a few years the latency issue on wireless will be a memory... just like analog voice :-)
Good luck with your marketing of this product! Just a word of caution... When I signed on with my company, they make every employee sign an intelectual property rights agreement. Basically, if I were to develop a technology, or solution like you have, using company assets, on company time.. they OWN the rights to the IP.

Tat2Skullz,
Im HIP to the fact that if you use company assets and time to do something that the Company has rights to it (maybe even so far as OWNS it.) So I am digging into my wallet to to make sure that no company assets are being used and all the TIME is my own (weekends and evenings at home) that would suck to do all the work only to have it ripped right out from under you because you used some "assets" of the company to do something and therefore they get rights to it. LOL Thanks for the reminder!
So far I have not had the VOIP disconnect because of latency...hmmm lucky I guess...

Complete system including a NEW TOSHIBA laptop Pentium M class 1.6ghz 512/40GB/cdrw/dvd/ model Techra A5 along with a Xenarc 700TSV screen all the wiring, GPS (earthmate with 2005 SW) mic, software etc will be around $2400.00 usd. This price is highest because of the systems MOBILITY (you can detach it and put it into a CAR etc.)
Options will include Wireless Internet via Verizon (rated the BEST of breed in its catagory) and believe me I've tried almost all of em! You would be responsible for the monthly recurring charges (MRC) and the purchase of the card.
Partial packages will be available (if you already have a qualifying laptop) etc you can buy only what you need!

just curious, what about moisture, is that monitir weather proof ?
The monitor has a Stainless Steel (one-off) enclosure and so far it's been rained on and one time I forgot to put a plastic bag over it and sprayed it with my pressure washer (on accident) and it works just fine. It's been on for over a year now...so...is it waterproof? NO! but it is proving to be pretty rugged.
I do have a "shroud" made from cardboard thats been covered with a BLUE electrical tape (2" wide tape completely covers the cardboard so that it is more water tolerant) and that definetly helps with keeping water off the front face and also helps with keeping direct sunlight off of it, aiding with visibility in broad daylight.)
All in all it is a system that works...if I ever start producing "kits" to sell then I will make the shroud out of plastic (smoked) to make it look better.
