I took a fact finding tour on spring break out to the Cowboy Dinner Tree. WOW is that out in "The Middle of No Where". It's very rustic, let's say down right ramshackled! It snowed most of the time we where there and the wind was blowing like snot.

The restraunt is nestled among the sagebrush and sits in front of an ancient juniper tree. Out front is an enormouse weathered teepee, which is the waiting room and bar (BYOB). The whole scence would look like something straight out of the old west, if it weren't for the cars parked out front. As you get out of your rig, the fist thing you notice is the smell wafting toward you over the sage, a scent guaranteed to provoke a growl from your stomach (to bad we didn't make reservations). It doesn't take long to idetify the source, a small cookshack behind the restaraunt, where giant steaks sizzle on a grill and whole chickens are slow-roasted. We (Robin Michelle & I) visited for a long while with the pioneering woman who ran the gift shop, while the cold wind blew threw the cracks and crevis' of the tired old building, she had a very hot fire going in the wood stove, but it was a struggle to keep up with the cold dessert wind.

The restraunt gets its name from local lore, cowboys from the nearby ranches used to break from their work to rest in the shade of the tree where their wives would meet them with a midday meal. The tree became known as the dinner tree, and when the restaurant was built more than a half century later, it was named for the tree and the tradition.

The roads out to Bend are very good and straight as most of you probably already know, but the first 18 miles on 31 out to the restraunt is aligatored and fairly rough. Total Milage is less than 250 from Salem, not a big deal (there's lots of Picture Opps.) I think this will be a fun easy overnight trip, and I'm sure the wheather will improve by June.

Please let me know if you have any comments or questions, I'll be happy to help.

Hey Pi, I think Arch will probably want their 25 gallon can of oatmeal instead of the chicken.

Pi,

I just have to say. That is one sweet presentation you've made on the Cowboy run. Informative, easy to read, colorfull ect ect. I think the creatively artistic possibilities of this site are starting to grow on you 8)

Soon you'll know how hard it's been for me posting a "presentation" here , and then having to go over to yahoo and post the same thing in the most boring
black and white bla bla bla no eye candy whatsoever format that is like the difference between a 1940's black and white 8" screen and a state of the art plasma high definition super set

Hey Pi,

I was curious, were you making dinner reservations for all of us? Will there be a problem because some of us had already caslled the resturant and made reservations prior? Do we each need to call and make sure we aren't double booked so to speak?

Pi
03-14-2004, 10:04 PM
Hey Man Whor,

Missed ya on the ride, I'm sure you would have enjoyed the chasing cows, bowling for trees, bike falling over, caught in construction, 115 mph dodging cagers and cops putt home from Eugene, Ride. Reservations are all taken care of, I spoke with the lady at the Cowboy Dinner Tree about 3 weeks ago and I told her that the people who made their own resevations are included in my total count. They just wanted to make sure they got us all in the same area of the restraunt. :P

As some of you know, I've requested your confirmation for the Cowboy Dinner Tree Ride. If you did not get a message from me, then I do not have you signed up. This does not mean you can not go, it simple means you will not get to eat at the Cowboy Dinner Tree. Go to http://www.geocities.com/kitpi/PiPlace.html?1076782315203 and view the Guest Book to see if you are signed up. Dead line for sign up is May 31.As soon as I can tie Sundance down, we'll post a meating (pun intended) place and departure time.

The Terrace #541-576-2278
The Desert Inn #541-576-2262
These are old numbers, I use to have property over there.
The Terrace is the best, but I have stayed at both.

April, 2004

It is the desire of the Oregon X-Riders to provide a safe and pleasant ride experience for any individual who wishes to participate in an Oregon X-Riders Group Ride.

All riders are invited to participate, regardless of the type of bike that is ridden, as long as the Oregon X-riders Group Riding Rules are followed by each rider.

1. The Oregon X-Riders will obey all posted speeds.

2. Alcohol will not be consumed during the ride. If you wish to drink, do it after the ride has ended.

3. Before the ride begins, a ride leader and tail gunner will be chosen.

4. The ride leader will review the rules of riding as a group before departing, including hand signals to be used, to educate those who have not ridden with the Oregon X-riders before.

5. The ride leader will be responsible for leading the group on the designated route and riding at a pace that will be comfortable for all riders, including those less experienced.

6. Before the ride leader pulls out on to a road at the start of the ride or after fuel/break stops, he will ensure that all riders are ready to move out and will check with the tail gunner to ensure things are OK on his end. If the group gets separated, the ride leader will find a safe spot to pull over and bring the group back together.

7. The ride leader will use hand signals to alert the rest of the group of road hazards or unexpected diversions from the ride route. Others in the group will also pass on the hand signals to communicate information to the rest of the group following.

8. The tail gunner will be responsible for ensuring the group is all together by bringing up the rear of the group. If a problem occurs, the tail gunner will signal to the ride leader by flashing his headlight’s high beam.

9. Should a rider need assistance, the tail gunner will be responsible for pulling over with the rider in need and will render appropriate assistance.

10. When contemplating a lane change, the ride leader will engage his turn signal, but remain in the lane occupied. The tail gunner will check to see that a safe lane change can be made by the entire group and will claim the new lane. The ride leader will then change lanes, with other riders following suit.

11. Less experienced riders will be placed behind the group leader to ensure they are watched out for and are comfortable.

12. Riding will be staggered, at a safe distance between each bike, and placements will be held while on the road. Changes can be made at fueling stops or other breaks. In rural locations, riding will be single file to safely accommodate curves and unfamiliar roads.

13. Regardless of the ride leader’s speed or hand signals, each rider is responsible for his own safety at all times. If a rider becomes uncomfortable with the speed of the group, slow down! This will let the ride leader and other more experienced riders know that the group speed is too fast.

14. If, while riding as a group, any rider decides not to follow the group riding rules, the ride leader will find a safe place to pull the group over to review the safety components of riding together as a group. The ride leader will then discuss the concerns privately with the offender the first time. If the offender continues to ride unsafely, the offender will be told to leave the riding group.

15. Before heading home the ride leader will find a safe place to pull the group over and the ride will be designated as over so those who want to split off from the group and ride home at their own speed may do so.

These Group Riding Rules are non-negotiable and not up for debate. If you have suggested additions to these rules, please contact the Oregon X-Riders State Coordinator, Jim Archambault at archamjdk@comcast.net

The Oregon X-Riders Rules Committee will meet at least once each year to review the riding rules and make any necessary changes.

If you find yourself uncomfortable with the riding style of this group DROP OUT!! Each rider’s safe arrival at their destination is far more important than conforming to rules or a style you don’t like or understand.
