View Full Version : HIT A MOOSE ON MY BIKE

Hit a moose on my trusty 1800 this morning my bike is rideable although it is leaking from about everywhere. I am ok thanks to my gear I did go sliding down the road on my belly and hands for about 50 yards at about 50mph. I am real banged up but ok. My left side of my bike is damaged but aside from moose blood and hair I think it will be ok with some work and new parts. Nothing like going down the highway at 50 mph about 5 feet in back of my bike and about 10 ahead of the moose to remind a guy of the importance of safety gear.

Yikes! Glad to hear you're okay!
So how did you hit the moose? Did he run into the side of your bike like a deer, or did he run in front and you went down avoiding? Did you go down and hit the legs?
That's a real bummer, but at least you're okay. So will you incorporate one moose kill on the side of your tank when you have it painted???

I hit it like a deer that ran in front of me. But I hit his hind quarters. I am not sure if I would have put my bike down to avoid him. I really didn't have any tme to make any decision because he ran across in front of me on a curve and I didn't have any chance to do anything except get a very close look at the moose before I hit him. There are no skids marks. I didn't even have time to apply the brakes it was that fast. I will put a little moose on my gas tank when it is fixed in keeping with the tradition of aviators and motorcycle riders everywhere. right now I am relaxing as only one can do when shot full of valium. About 2 hours after I met the moose, every thing started to hurt, but the doc said nothing was broken but everything was going to be real tight and sore. as for my bike it is in the same shape as me - it runs but although the frame is not bent the seals are all leaking and the chrome is scraped so I should be out riding the x pretty soon.
I will post some photos complete with moose blood, hair and broken chrome soon.

Ouch... that's gotta hurt!!!!!!
Sure glad to hear that you are okay and you still have all your parts... nothing broken!!!!!! That's outstanding!!! We were looking forward to riding with you when we get up there in 11 days........ any chance you can still make it? I know a good MC rental place...
Perhaps we can still get together for breakfast, lunch dinner or a drink while we are in town.
Thanks again for all the advice on where to go / what to do while we are in Alaska!!!
We'll be staying at the Anchorage Hilton Sat. night 6/11, then heading down to Seward sometime Sunday morning.
Back to Anchorage late Monday night and off to Denali on Tuesday AM.
Then, heading up to Fairbanks on Thursday AM.
Back to Anchorage on Sat. 6/18.....
Hope we can hit your schedule sometime during our visit..... at least to say hello!!!
Good luck to both you and the X on a speedy recovery and getting back on the road.
George & Andrea
P.S. Please advise the wildlife (and the weather) that we will be visiting soon.... :D

Al,
Sorry to hear about your run in with the moose. Glad you are ok and that nothing was broken. Once again, protective gear has proven its benefits.
Heal quick and ride soon.

Thanks for sharing your moose hunting adventure. I bet the moose was just jealous he didn't have an X, and that was his way of throwing a tantrum.
I am glad to hear you walked (limped) away and you and the X will make a full recovery.
Ride on brother !!

AlaskaRider,
I do not know what parts are compatible from the 1300 to the 1800, but I have a complete exhaust, passenger foot pegs and a complete airbox collecting dust in storage with only 100 miles on them, if you want them.
If you can use them to get your bike up and running, I'll donate if you cover the shipping.
Let me know. Always like to help another X-rider.

Thanks for the offer Al. I hit the moose in June so my x is up and running again. I am having it painted right now to match my avitar and getting the back taillight and turn signals frenched into the fender. If you ever get up here let me know and we will go for a ride.

Do those sound things that deter deer work for moose?

They don't even work for deer.
