completed my first IBA event saturday. my pal steve and i did a saddle sore 1000. we did it in 17 hours. not the fastest, but we enjoyed it. anyhow it ain't a race i heard. we left berlin, ma and rode to harborcreek pa. thru the berkshires, into upstate ny on the thruway, into pa.
i expected it to be harder physicily. but i found out it was way harder mentally. the last 150 miles i couldn't hold a line, but i just kept telling myself i'm almost done. steve has an st1300, so we kept together fine.
there was a spot on the thruway where we came upon 2 "american scooters" that thought they wanted to play....as we screamed by them well into triple digits, they thought better of the game
learned a lot for the next one too.

I also did my first IBA event tis past sat. We actually took too long to do it. Too many breaks. My friend was on his stock seat and it got to the point where we had to stop every 60, 70 miles for him to get the feeling back in his butt. Seems as though the longer you take to do it the more tiresome it becomes. I want to do this again but next time cut out the breaks. I figured I can save almost 5 hours off of the 22.5 it took to do it.

My hat's off to you as well, I don't care if it took you 23.9 hours!!

This side of Sanity---like I'm one to speak---the best on the long hauls I can do is roughly a 65 mile per hour average which aint no easy feat. If I could remove the possibilty of a ticket I could do considerable better(which I have)...so that said I'd feel real good turning 1000mi in 17 hours or less in all weather conditions....MIKE(TTT)

Please share what you learned. I am thinking about trying to talk a friend into doing the IBA Saddle Sore 1000, and any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I did a 1000 mile run last year returning from Tennessee to Kansas but never turned in the information. Officially it was 1018 miles in 18.5 hours. Almost all interstate and 4-lane, so I was able to keep up my speed. Plus I sat out one tornado and one hail storm. The hardest part was the final hours after dark. Fortunately, I-70 in Kansas after dark is pretty empty.

My advice.........a good seat, a route with little traffic and avoid large cities or congested areas, get lots of sleep the night before, and I think some type of music would help. After the first 100 or so miles, I got tired of talking to myself..........

i hear you on the final hours after dark scarecrow!! the last 150 miles we did were a blurr...at 85mph! not good, not really safe, but my mind kept saying,"the faster you finish, the sooner you can sleep" one rider in our region left at 2am, he finished at 6 or 7pm, well ahead of darkness, and he beat the afternoon t-storms we rode thru. next time i'll be doing just that. and i learned the X sure needs a bigger tank. when i ride with the massxriders, we all need gas at the same time. no problem, but my riding partner for the SS1k, was on a honda st1300, his range is like 275, so all my gas stops killed our time. oh yeah, and i learned that sun block ISN'T just for girls, my arms are just scabbing up now. that's way past burn, blister, and peel. can't carry enough water! both of us could feel the lack of focus driving when we started to get dehydrated. i found that a sport bottle of water can be wedged between the windshield and the bars to provide water while driving.
rest up 2-3 days before leaving. we didn't/couldn't and paid the price. the next morning i felt like i had a horrible hang-over, and no we didn't drink!
the X performed flawlessly, and the Ultimate seat was a butt-saver for sure
hope this helps, Craig

What really "killed" me was the final severe storm, which I hit at 10 PM about 6 miles from my house. 40+ mph wind gusts and hail put me under a bridge on I-70. After about 15 minutes of waiting, I finally said the hell with it and rode on, bike leaning 45 degrees into the wind. But at least the road was completely void of any other traffic.

BTW, I found I could fillup with gas using a credit card and never get off the bike. This really cut down on my stop times. But my a$$ was still sore!

Now I limit my rides to 750 miles or less a day. At least that way I can walk the next day (or ride).

A small group of us (4 or 5) are going for a 1500BB this Sat / Sun (18-19 Jun). It will be a circular course leaving west central missouri passing through St Louis, up through Rockford, Il., on to Milwaukee, Wi., then to Madison, Wi., through Minnesota on I-90 to Sioux Falls, Sd., then down I-29 to KC and back to home. Map program puts it at about 1557 miles. Uncertain whether we will try to make the 1K SS in conjunction with this ride or call it off aaround 850 and get a nap in before finishing off the ride. Hope all have a wonderful Fathers Day weekend. We are going to do our best.

Craig,

Congrats on your IB SS1000. That early rider would have been Eric. I read his post over on the NER board. You are fortunate. The IB that left from Maine last year and tours the New England states typically finished in 22 hours. Todd did a nice job....head west in the morning and east in the afternoon keeps the sun behind you most of the day.

That sensation you had is often referred to as the "bonk". Marathoners, triatheletes and other endurance participants get it from not hydrating properly. The basic rule is if you are thirsty you are already screwed so drink lots and drink often.

For the folks that are contemplating this event here is a link you may want to explore.

:( Well we made the ride. Rode the route opposite to original post due to projected weather, that did not materialized till a day later. Yet went over time. 3 american made baggers, 1 1800C & mine. A froze shock on one bagger kept us from pushing the speed limit, a rear flat on another bagger ate up time limping it to a station and for some reason the 1800 couldn't get past 120 miles without refueling. It was truly an experiance and saw lots of country. Saw some country I want to go back to and do some serious exploring of the backroads. :D Wish all good luck and be safe. The cagers will take you out if you let your guard down.

hey jwhok, nothing is planned, but all my "fair-weather" friends are NOW saying, oh, i'll go if you go again.
i'd do it again, no problem. we had a good time and we're always up for a challenge. my friend steve that did the 1k with me, we met and went thru scouts with our kids, us as the leaders. many miles, many trips, many kids, (and even more challenges from them) together. it's funny we are both back into bikes after years of kid-raisin' etc. we had never ridden together until late last fall, but we just took up where scouts left off a few yrs. ago. buddy system, help each other, we planned our packing so neither was over-loaded, but between us, we had everything we would need. it was reassuring that whatever happened, good or bad, neither would be left, one of us wouldn't go on alone. the wife wasn't too keen on me going, till i told her i talked steve into going with me. so with the wimmin' ok with it, off we went.
actually kinda looking forward to another one!

Did my first SS1000 a couple weeks ago. Had a group of 7, all finished. It took us about 21 hours, overall average speed was approx 49mph. Left from Indianapolis and headed to just outside Atlanta and back. I didn't have much trouble with the "final hour" or so, mainly because most of the way back we rode in a light rain fall, tends to help keep you awake. I'm planning on doing the Bun Burner 1500 towards the end of August. Heading out to Salt Lake City.
Congrats to all who have done the SS.
