I'll map out a route and see what we can do to get 1000. I like back roads whenever possible, but to get 1K miles in 16 to 18 hours, we may have to include some interstate rolling.

Once my ultimate Big Boy seat comes in I may be interested..... time and $ allowed.

I've been reading the regulations & requirements for a certified Iron Butt ride. If I'm gonna do the thing, I think I'll put in the extra effort to get it certified so I can get me one of them cool shirts & maybe a patch for my vest.
It would be best if we all started together and knew the requirements before we start rolling. Full info can be found at http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/getdocument.cfm?DocID=1

My lady and I had looked into this some months ago. We were going to do it over the 4th. After we thot about that, bumper to bumper traffic on an expressway didn't sound like a lot of fun.
She downloaded all the specs and documentation needed. You are absolutely going to do some interstate riding to pull this off, like the other side of the panhandle in TX and back.
My biggest constraint right now is indeed that seat. Sorry, even with the hwypegs, my back and butt can handle only so much time on the xtreme machine. There just is no lumbar support. I've sat on another 1800R that had a Corbin, with the backrest. VERY nice :D . It felt almost like a recliner. Haven't had the chance to sit a Mustang.
Daniel that works in the parts dept of Bumpus-Collierville has ridden many thousand miles. He strongly suggested doing some progressively longer rides to build the lumbar area muscles up to this endeavor.
Whenever we can put a weekend in for this and all have their bikes configured as they want them, we're in.

My Karen and I are in. The issue for her is when, for me its affording the finishing touches on the bike regarding performance and the seat. I'm thinking September or October.

Hey Guys I have a Iron Butt 1000 route tell me what cha think. West Memphis, AR. to Weatherford, OK. Its just a shade over 1000 miles. No major traffic problems, The only major citys we have too transverse are not that bad traffic wise. Or we could move it back a few miles to Horn Lake and go to Hayden, OK I think thats the citys name????

The literature I've read from the IB suggests that we not be real close on the mileage. According to them, some of the metric bikes run a little shy on the odometer. I think I'd be inclined to make it closer to 1.1K.

hokiehi,
This is the route Horn Lake, MS to Weatherford ,OK which is 554.4 Miles one way that should give us well above the required 1000 miles. If you want one weekend you and I can make the ride and check in with a few Truck stops and gas stations and see if we can use them as check points. also I will track the ride on the GPS to see the actual miles. Let me know what you think? And if any one else wants to ride on the check out criuse or has some more ideas please feel free to speak!!
Thanks Cookie Monster

You and i have spoken about this and you know I'm game. The only thing I can think is that folks may not have basically an entire weekend to put into scouting this thing out.
On the other hand folks, I do agree with the Cookiemonster that we need some feedback on how many we can expect to participate and their constraints.

This is just my 2 cents. First check out the IB website. I think that they prefer a route that is a loop not a straight shot down the superslab and back. A good route that I am thinking about is to Memphis, Knoxville, Bham, Jackson and home. Just got back from a bike vacation and last Saturday I rode 750 miles in a day with no problem and could have made the extra 250 with ease. Here are some things I thought about while riding. I could not have made as good of time with a group of bikes. I ride a 1800 C and most of the time stop for fuel at 130 - 140 miles. The key to making time is the pit stops. I was riding 2-up and my wife and I had it down pat. She runs the credit card hands me the nozzle then goes to the restroom and buys a bottle of water. I fuel up go to the John and we both make it back about the same time, no more than 10 minutes. If no restroom break is needed 5 minutes. We ate a good breakfast and then some nabs while riding. We rode 750 miles in 12 hours. If there are bikes with differant ranges you all have to stop for the first one. Also with several bikes you may have a wait at the pumps. I want to do an IB but plan to ride with no more than 1 or 2 other riders and will have to practice the pit stops. ALSO, red bull was a key player. That stuff is magic.

I have checked out some iron Butt routes. 99% have been up and down on the same road. I was told the reason for that was safety, if something goes wrong you have two shots at help, the bikes both coming and going.
I carry several 1 litre MSR fuel bottles, I make a quick stop, get off bike add fuel, stretch legs, check other fluids, make quick inspections of other systems and hit the road again in less then 5 minutes. I do this on every other stop, on the other stops I do the same except I refuel the spare fuel bottles as well. Back on the road in less then 10 minutes there. We also try to pair up bikes with similar fuel requirments. Thanks again Rooster Butt for the info, if you wish to ride with us and or help with the ride you are very welcome.

I will monitor this thread because I am very interested. I have been kicking the idea around for a year or so and after my 750 mile day last week I know I can do it without too much pain.
Thanks for the invite.

I was thinking about the pair-ups as well. Like you Rooster I drive a C 130 to 140 is as far as I like to push it. But the Retro's can out last us. Sure would hate to hold someone else up due to my short gas range.

Don't think thats a big constraint. I know for me that I have to get my bike mapped to get back to 130-140 miles since adding the PC III. Its not like the fuel will go bad. I personally think we stand a greater chance of success with more riders. After all, I believe an implicit objective of this is to build a bond amongst us in accomplishing a sizable challenge.

Got my Ultimate in last Monday. Rode over to Heber Springs and then on to Little Rock and back.........No problem.
Crash bar with high-way pegs and a cruise control....and I will be ready to roll. My wrist did get a little tired.

Don't know when I'll be able to get a different seat. You know how the expense thing goes. May have to try to do something else to increase padding for this ride. The hwypegs helped a lot.
Did get a serial cable to hook my computer to the PC III and loaded a map for HK sideburners into the bike. I think it will do well toward improving range on a tank until I can afford the dyno. The base map appears designed to take care of decel popping more than anything else. A lot of fuel dumped in at 1500 rpm over most throttle settings. Hope to find out this w/e in Oxford for the BK poker run.
I think REALBOB would agree with me that the Cobra Fatty Bars are a very good mix of protection and look. You will need different adapters for your hwypegs however since Fatty Bars are 1.5" rather than 1.25".
On the throttle thing, I like the Kury throttle boss. I know cookiemonster has some sort of throttle boss on his as well. A whole lot less expensive than true cruise control.
Looking good for at least 3 to 4 riders.

If I have my seat in time I will go.....if not I will have to catch ya next time....I know I can't go 1000 on the stocker

Amen to the stock seat working on the back. I will have to say that I have plopped my dorsal support on Ultimates, Mustangs and Corbin. I plan to go with the Corbin. Just  a matter of the $$$.
